Dude, you should visit Australia; they don't nationally recognize Halloween, & of course have no Thanksgiving, so Christmas always starts appearing in September
Since everyone else is doing it, I've started selling Christmas stuff to my relatives. It's better than having them buy it at walmart.
All in all the total materialism of the season disgusts me.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
With the way our economy is doing, they need to put that stuff out early to tempt people to buy it!
That is exactly why they are doing it as well. a report came out that retailers are scared to death of this crhistmas shopping season. they are running sales and specials really early this year so that can get consumers in quicker.
I mean look at kmart and other stores have brought back layaway. something that hasn't been seen in years and years.
even lowes has it now.

They're advertising it, and perhaps some locations had stopped doing it - but the K-Mart by me has had a "layaway counter" since I've moved out here shortly after the millenium [old city didn't have a K-Mart so no clue previous], which I'd imagine was used for layaway.
Similarly our Wal-Mart has had signage up regarding layaways as well for a few years that I've seen a few times when I've had to pick up a prescription in between insurance.
Of course I'm in a relatively "in flux" economic area where layaway and the like would always be of greater interest - college nearby, people making $100k+ 20 min up the road, those making minimum wage a 20 min busride the other direction.
every year its becoming earlier and earlier. When I worked at Petsmart (yr 1) Halloween stuff came out end of september and christmas stuff came out mid to early november. By the end of my 3rd year working there I had halloween stuff in at end of august and christmas stuff in october. Its becoming insane. Eventually once christmas is over, youll shop for next year the following week, lol.

About a decade ago, I worked at Kirkland's during college. Kirkland's (if you don't know) is a home furnishings and decorative store that largely targets middle to upper middle class women. I was in charge of the warehouse for a handful of stores and we'd start getting shipments of Christmas stuff in June. Very shortly after we'd unpack the item it would go onto the retail store. I personally don't care how "early" Christmas and Halloween items hit the store shelves, because I celebrate both holidays year round. A few months ago I was listening to some Christmas albums in my office and the guy down the hall came in and asked if I was a bit early for that stuff. Not in my world, buddy. I watch Halloween movies and eat Halloween candy year round, to boot. I visit Branson, MO numerous times a year and every time, regardless of what month or season it is, I stop in the Christmas store they have there. I'm down with it.

I've noticed this year they are selling the tiny, in-need-of-love Christmas tree from the Charlie Brown Christmas cartoon.
ah, such irony, as loveable blockhead being disgruntled about the over-commercialization of Christmas.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
Yeah one day they will probably have Christmas decorations up before it's even the 4th of July.
Hey, our neighbours managed to keep their Christmas lights up, and lit, for two years straight.
It's kind of lame to see the holiday kitch hit the shelves early, like in October. But really, who cares?
Either you live in a flat and have few people over to your place anyway. So you don't need a lot of ornaments (and don't have space to store them).
Or you live in a house and can simply amass ornaments over time, and store them in the basement or attic when you're done. Buying new ornaments is not necessary, just ignore the loads of glitter and fluff. Replace burnt out bulbs, buy fresh candles, that's about it.
Our flat is pretty small. We also have pets who chew things close to the ground. Our ornaments are limited to a spruce sprig on the door, and any holiday cards we get are pinned up or taped to the dining room wall. That is a much cheerier indicator of the spirit of the season than fake wicker reindeer or handblown glass icicles. It reminds us why we take time off and who is still with us and remembers us.
I mean, ya still gotta buy a box of Christmas cards every year and send them out. These you can get just about any time of year by mail order. You can even get custom cards printed with pics of your family or whatever you like, and send them out as e-cards. And it's a lot cheaper and better than buying a tree and roping it with plastic bling.

The Bar months and the early parts of January is technically Xmas season.....
We have
Unofficial Halloween, Octoberfest (local style), the actual Xmas season lasting up to early January not counting the many town fiestas.

I'm pretty sure K-Mart has always had layaway.
EDIT: for those who don't know its a football article on ESPN.

I thought there for a while they got rid of it. I could be wrong but i thought for several years they did.
in any event they are pushing their layaway even more. walmart is doing the same thing.
people are strapped for cash so they are giving them the best way possible i guess.
