Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reports that a woman starved to death after embarking on a spiritual diet that required her to stop eating or drinking and live off sunlight alone.
Madness, uh? What it's required for someone to actually believe he/she can live only of "sunlight"?
Live like a plant huh? What an idiot. Next thing you know people will be standing in rows in fields waiting for a the all-knowing tractor/combine to come and 'harvest' their impurities away. Stupidity runs rampant worldwide and all we can do is blame powerlines.
Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)
Make the white queen run so fast, she hasn't got time to make you wise.
Pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream.
Doctor, my eyes, tell me what you see. I hear their cries... just say if it's too late for me.
Doctor, my eyes...cannot see the sky. Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry?
This is a tragedy. I'm sure this poor woman's family must be feeling all sorts of conflicting feelings right now; my heart goes out to them.

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
I doubt it. Most people who die of starvation aren't even hungry anymore. They just want to sleep. You feel like you have no enegry.
As someone who has no hunger response anymore (probably related to my temporal lobe oddities - had hunger response up to about 8 years before my nasty neurologic stuff started) I can attest to the end result, that's how I actually get reminded that I need food when my wife isn't around and I forget to set my alarms - my legs get more sluggish than normal and I start getting tired at inappropriate times.
And I'm sure the first part is right, just like any type of human adaptation - like how some people from consistent handling flame close to their hands can become tolerant of passing their hand directly into a flame, etc.
This is a tragedy. I'm sure this poor woman's family must be feeling all sorts of conflicting feelings right now;
Why? She made a choice and she saw it to the end. I am not saying many would make that choice but why is someone following their heart a tragedy?
I agree, this isnt normal thinking, but what makes that wrong? I give her a lot of credit for being her own person and following her ideals, instead of being a sheep and following like everyone else.
I can see how society would be scared of such a person. But in reality society needs more people like this and less sheeple.
That's strange. I've done some intense fasts before. I've done 15 days on fruit juice, 9 on only water but only 24 hours with neither.
I have a hard time she lasted that long without drinking.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

Presumably she never intended to die from it; this article notes that she had promised her children that she would quit were there any danger to her health. She simply didn't realize what was happening until disaster struck.

I don't know, Senori, a person refuses to eat or drink by their own volition because she thinks she can survive without it and then dies?
It's certainly sad, but that's not tragic, because anyone could tell you that's what happens when you don't eat for a month after dehydrating yourself. The article says she didn't drink water for a week. I'm amazed she lived as long as she did.

Except isn't that exactly what she did? She followed a guy who claimed he lived off the sun for over 70 years.

And people die everyday. She could have died from getting hit by a truck or falling down a well. Following something you wish to do and dying isnt tragic in my eye.
People ignore signs their bodies send them all the time and get very sick and/or die. Its really not surprising she ignored the signs.

Fair enough, still she made the choice and followed thru.
Fair enough, still she made the choice and followed thru.
No, she didn't make the choice and followed "thru." She wanted to not starve to death. Unfortunately, her methodology to achieve her "not starving to death" goal ended up being to starve herself to death, which she did because she believed someone who said he was able to not eat or drink anything for 70 years and didn't die, and chose to believe him over biology.
I see it more as a "It's working! I'm not hungry anymore! I'll just sleep in the sun like plants :-)"
In her case, most likely.
I'll say it again, this woman believed she could starve herself to death and the result would not be death by starvation. She was obviously delusional. Who knows what was going through her mind?
That's why I had a tattoo artist pigment my entire skin with chlorophyll and cellulose. Worth every penny.
If you want to be a plant, you gotta do it proper.
Seriously though this is pretty sad even through the stupid. She was still a people (and most definitely not a vegetable (except maybe towards the end)).
I saw an episode of Wife Swap where one of the mothers practiced that. One of the kids in the new house she went to was like "my new mom eats the sun...craazzyyyy..." finger circling the ear and all.
I don't understand why she though that was a good idea or why she didn't stop. Starving to death isn't exactly quick and painless..
And the planet loses another genius. How will we cope.
This was still a person. Please, everyone, be respectful.

I don't understand how anyone could think this was a good idea. Nor do i really understand how someone could in conscious put out the story that they did this for 70 years?

Have you seen some of the diets that get published? Its very easy to see how someone could think they could do this, especially with someone else claiming they have.

I feel bad for her family, but don't really have all that much sympathy for people with absolutely no common sense.

How'd she survive a year without drinking?

Most people who die of hunger do so involuntarily. I'm pretty sure that they'd would have done everything they could to have avoided it.

OH SNAP!
To be fair, though, she did live the rest of her life without eating or drinking!
That's true! Science wins out once again.
