When I found out Netflix was reviving Arrested Development, I thought it was an excellent precedent for this. And now here we are.
I gotta admit I'm probably more excited about this that I should be (especially since everything could still not work out). But since we're talking about one of my favorite series, which happens to also be one of the most underrated in the history of television, I think I'll allow myself some leverage.
Plus, if the initiative fails, at least we got that lovely little 5-minute relapse video.
WB has pledged to pick up the marketing, distribution, etc costs, the assembled cast and much of the important crew are all agreeing to massive paycuts, etc. This deal has been in the works for a very long time (if I'm not mistaken, the video itself was shot last year) and Rob Thomas has been saying that he wouldn't tease the fans unless there were a serious shot.
That said, the situation is a fair bit unprecedented and therefore very unpredictable. I'm only optimistic because RT and KBell have both admitted that this is the last piece of the puzzle, if they could prove fan interest and raise the $2mill it was a done deal. It's a no risk, plenty of reward deal for the studio (the fans invest, so there's very little overhead, but if the movie earns a lot of money it's the studio that ultimately profits) and given that the kickstarter fund is already just shy of half the goal after only a few hours, I have no doubt they'll reach the funding goal.
This only falls apart if the studio backs out, and I'm not seeing why they would. They wouldn't have been in talks this long and gotten RT and KBell to jump through hoops if they weren't somewhat interested.
Huh? Veronica Mars doesn't strike me as an especially movie-friendly franchise. It runs on mysteries-of-the-week and season-spanning story arcs - respectively too little and too big to fit into a feature film.

The idea for the film has always been to give the series some closure, since it was pretty depressing to have it end that way. I'm pretty confident they can recapture the magic in the big screen.
But yeah, I gotta be honest and say that getting the series back for a fourth season would be way more awesome.
Reportedly, the script has to do with Neptune High's 10 Year Reunion and a murder that occurs during reunion weekend. I think that's a fairly stock noir mystery story outline that can conceivably fit into a film. It also works really well as an organic way to feature a lot of the bit players from Neptune that fans will want to see. Wallace, Mac, Weevil, Madison Sinclair, Butters (though he wasn't in that class), Van Clemmons, Duncan (though I guess technically he dropped out and probably can't resurface because of the whole kidnapping thing), Corny, etc. I just wanna see Cliff and Vinnie Van Lowe again.
