I'm not going to beat around the bush. Teens drink alcohol and do drugs. And in America (which will be the country I talk about for this case), that's illegal. So what can I do about it? On facebook, people make groups titled something like "if you're a teen and dont do drugs/drink join". I click on the link to see what else it says and there are people...kids defending doing drugs etc etc. I'm just astounded that people have the audacity (or is it stupidity) to pseudo-admit to it. And there are those who do admit to it... And I'm not talking about (supposed to be) adults, I mean teenagers ages 14-18 (high schoolers) admitting to it and putting it on facebook, the internet for all to see. Is there no end to the stupidty? Is there anything I can do?
tl;dr
Why are people so dumb? It never fails to amaze me.
They're 'dumb' because of the anonymity of face book. You can say you do it, you can own up to it, and there's no retaliation. No one can find you. The authorities don't care enough; there's no proof you're doing it, and they'd have to do an excessive amount of work to get to you. More than they're willing to do. You're safe, and so you can do it. Makes you feel empowered.
Why not just let people live their own lives? If you don't agree with their choices, then just leave it at that imo. There's really no reason to try and get them in trouble, because it really doesn't have anything to do with you. I'm not trying to sound rude or anything, I'm just saying. Let people do what they want to do. The way I see it, there's nothing wrong with drugs/alcohol as long as people engage in these activities in a safe environment around people they trust. I'm also not saying drugs and alcohold are safe, but what really is?
Pretty much, AG. On those sites, you're not required to reveal your identity. You can give any name, any address. You can pretend to be someone else. As much as you like.
What the police -could- do is subpoena the IP address information from Facebook, then use that with the ISP to track down possible suspects. With the combination of recorded MAC address, they could potentially find the person that wrote that note. This would take a long time. They'd have to get all the information, and first they'd need the subpoena from a judge. For that, they'd need probable cause.
As far as I'm aware, internet admissions are not permissible in court. You can say anything and there's no knowing if you meant it, or if its true. I could say now that I drink (which I do on occasion) and do drugs (which I never have). But there's no knowing, and no evidence, if any of this is true.
Unless you're getting into the areas of grand theft, rape, murder, or the like, the police simply aren't going to bother.
Not only that Nai, but even if said person does somehow get arrested and convicted, if they're a juvenile, they'll basically just get an MIP. Which is essentially a wrist slap.
While I don't think there is anything wrong with them drinking/doing drugs, you are right that they are stupid to admit it on a social networking site. I do wonder how any of this effects you personally though. Putting your nose in other people's business if a good way to find theirs in yours.

This is what I was trying to say, only yours is much shorter. I forgot to address the part about them bragging about it on social networking sights or whatever. Yes, that is stupid. However, that said, I do agree that it really is none of the op's business. I mean, are they really harming you enough to make you want to report their actions to the authorities? My guess is 'no'.
People really do think they are cool when they do drugs. I know I did. It didn't help the kind of music I listened to, glorified selling/doing them. Basically teens will be teens. Only now that I get older and think about my son, do I realize how stupid I was.

Honestly, I understand where you're coming from, but on the other hand - if individuals aren't willing to complain, lodge reports and try to change things - we're going to have an entire generation of unsuccessful, noncontributing drugged up alcoholics that will get more 'bored' as time passes and start going to violence and abuse for excitement.
And that, honestly, scares me that it's already happened.
I think they're "dumb" for trying things that are dangerous to their health.
I was a teen once and I do know how peer pressure and the hormones affect one's decision-making capabilities. Teens are reckless and think they're invincible, that 1 cigarette, 1 sniff of crack or 1 bottle of beer is enough (yeah right).
Drinking really isn't bad as long it's in moderation (1 bottle of beer/day). Drugs will always have adverse effects to one's health. Except marijuana which is not addictive and has no proven major health risks yet. Smoking causes cancers.
Yeah, we really shouldn't mind other people's business. But another thread here says about being lucky, guilt and how to give back. If you know kids or even adults with a drug/alcohol problem, help them seek professional help.
Oh quitting cold turkey may kill someone who has a strong addiction and dependence.

This is not only a response to Jim, but to all of you who are on the side of MYOB:
This was my train of thought, at first. Let people live their own lives, they can do what they want as long as it doesn't hurt me. And I went with it for a while, it worked. But after I saw a pic of my friend passed out drunk behind the car wheel...That was the breaking point. This same friend who had that pic posted, had sworn to me that she'd never to drugs, and would even curse me out if I even made light jokes about them. And another friend, my best friend started doing drugs and it completely changed him. He's stopped, and starting to go back but...Things will never be the same. The way I see it, I let drugs alone and it still came running and hit me at full force. I want to be able to hit back.

It scares me too, and what you said reminded me of a poem I read a while back.
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out.
While it was first written about WWII and the Jews being persecuted, I feel as if it has meaning right now. If I don't do anything about it now, when I'm the only one left, who will?
Also:
Many (if not all) of you are saying something to the tune of:
Yes it's bad, but Mind your own business. I respect that line of thought, because I followed it for a long time. But when does it go from Minding Your Own Business to becoming an accomplice by hiding it for them or getting it for them? Or when your friend dies because they did drugs/drank and drove/etc and you did nothing to stop that because you were minding your own business? Where is the line drawn between Minding Your Own Business and blatantly ignoring the facts? It goes on in my school, I can see it in people's eyes, hear them talking about it away from the teacher.
Well if that's the case, why not "hit back" against your friends? If they're making promises like that and breaking them, then are they really that good of friends? And as far as drunk driving goes, just no. I don't care if someone doesn't have a ride home and they live however many hours away. I don't care if they live 2 minutes away. It's just stupid, and does put other peoples lives in danger.
My thought is that if you want to change people's behaviour, you need to be close to them. If some individual from some social networking site is reporting me for something I would not care. On the other hand, if someone that is close to me is trying to get through to me, it would work better.
Something like 10 years ago, a friend of mine went through a psychotic episode (some paranoid delusions and schizophrenic things going on), and he was doing very bad. He didnot accept the help of his doctor, and didnot want to get any help. Social workers could not sway him. It was only after me, and another friend of mine have been talking with eachother, wich was quite exhausting I must say, he decided it would be at least worth the try to get himself registered in a psychiatric hospital. He only admitted to this because as close friends we were able to show him what he did not only to himself, but also to the people that love him.
Point is: people that do drugs/alcohol don't care about others from some internet forum. They might care if they see how torn up their loved ones are, but unknowns????
Also, don't you think a lot of the talk about alcohol and drugs on FB etc might also be a form of bragging? Like "look how good I am, I can take a lot if beer and still walk" My bet is that a lot of things written there are not true.
Also, a lot of people when they are young go through a phase in wich they do almost everything that is forbidden. It has always been there and will always be. The only difference between then and now, is the fact that now people can express themselves worldwide, so more people see it and talk about it and make the problem seem bigger than it really is. I know, drugs and alcohol abuse is serious bussiness always, but don't make it any bigger than it is in reality.
It sucks to get drawn into problems caused by substance abuse even when you're not the one doing it. I've been there and it's not fun by any means. However, people will always fail to be rational and will keep harming themselves accordingly. Many people go through a phase of complete idiocy in their teens and I believe that's when most bad habits are learned. They can't get rid of said habits later either because of mental/physical addiction or a permanent shift in attitude. If it was impossible to get your hands on tobacco until you're 20, I bet the tobacco industry would crash and burn in a decade. The drinking culture would also probably shift away from binge drinking.
(Most) Drug experimentation is against the law but it's not exactly dangerous when done safely and correctly. Can't speak for douches on facebook. Drugs are not the enemy to America. People will do drugs regardless of the laws, it is important that children are properly educated and raised by their families and teachers to understand the goods and bads of drug use.
Don't make the use of illegal drugs your personal vendetta, AlmostGrown.

I'm not going to start campaigning to end all drugs and alcohol I just...Just want my friends to stop, and for things to go back to some semblance of normal, as they used to be. I want them to be safe, even if it means giving them a record or something of the sort.

If you actually care about these people you will let them live their lives. You can never get back what's already gone, largely because you can't unlearn things. You can't "unexperience". It would be good to know what age group you fall in, because it is entirely possible that your friends have changed in spite of drugs. I know a guy that turned into a real douchebag and smokes a lot of pot now, but I know well enough not to associate the two. Of course, if the problem is just that you don't like drugs then there really isn't any good advice to give you.

If they're your friends, then you probably shouldn't be doing things along the lines of getting them arrested. If you can't talk them out of it, then chances are getting arrested won't change their minds either. Drinking isn't so bad in moderation. Teens drink. Nothing you can do will change this. You could just go to parties with them. You don't have to drink at parties.
The NUMERO UNO UNDISPUTED cash crop of my home state is cannabis. They don't call this place "the Bluegrass" because of the color of people's lawns. More grass is grown in the west and east ends of Kentucky than in the entirety of the so-called "golden triangle" in California.
I smoke grass. ONE-QUARTER OF THE POPULATION OF THIS STATE DOES TOO.
No part of any plant that grows naturally on this planet should be illegal. Is nature illegal?

What does this have to do with anything else in the thread? No one said anything about legalizing it or otherwise. I don't care about Kentucky or you, because I don't live there and I'm not you. So... congratulations on doing drugs?

So i should sit idly by while they ruin their lives? Friends come and go, but when someone dies by overdosing or something drug related, and it's my friend, I want to be able to say that I tried to help, not just talked to them and said "To hell with it." If having them be arrested even starts them on the path to recovery, then I've done my part, even if they go back. If they go back, then I'm done. But I will NOT allow myself to see people I care about harm themselves.
Go to your local police department and speak with an officer there. Tell the police officer about who is underage, using drugs, and therefore breaking the law. Present the evidence you have of this underage drug use to them, and then instruct them to arrest the delinquent.
You must have evidence that is objective, though, such as a taped recording of the delinquent's admission to illegal drug use, or a cell phone video of that individual using illegal drugs. Your word alone might not suffice; you must present evidence that would be admissable during prosecution in a court of law.
If you obtain & present objective evidence, but the police refuse to arrest, speak to the police commissioner of that police department. If the police commissioner refuses to act upon your presentation of evidence of a violation of the law, write a letter to the Attorney General of your state about it, requesting that the police commissioner and police officers who refused to enforce the laws be reprimanded.
Someone has to protect people. It's not their choice to break the law and hurt themselves. Don't let anyone tell you that you're being a bad person by intervening in their lives when they are hurting themselves and breaking the law; you have the legal authority as their fellow citizen to make such an intervention. If they do not respect the laws of this country, they must leave or go to prison. You have every right and every responsibility to protect the people in your community, even against their own wills.
Be well!
Thank you Birds, you've made it clear for me how to go about doing this, and at the same time help me make my choice.

Absolute Law is only a Magic card, not a way of life! As long as no one is being hurt there is nothing that says the laws must be enforced. If the OP was talking about adults, I know that the officers will laugh in your face.
The people referenced in the OP on facebook are stupid. The idea that one should WASTE THE POLICE'S TIME AND MY TAX DOLLARS TALKING TO THEM ABOUT COMPLETE STRANGERS ON FACEBOOK SMOKING WEED AND DRINKING is absolutely RIDICULOUS.
What does this have to do with anything else in the thread? No one said anything about legalizing it or otherwise. I don't care about Kentucky or you, because I don't live there and I'm not you. So... congratulations on doing drugs?
*SNIP*
People who smoke marijuana in moderation are not harming themselves. Nor should what they're doing be a crime. I was taking offense at the assertion that everyone who does drugs is a criminal and hurting themselves.
If I caught my son snorting an Oxycontin, I would simply send him to drug rehab rather than CALLING THE LAW ON HIM.
Just who are you to make the decision on what another human should do? Intervening using the police is just going to cause more problems than it solves.
Heres what's going to happen if you call the cops on these people, they're probably going to be harassed by the cops. If anything comes of it, they will be arrested, and eventually have to go to court. Assuming things go poorly, they will end up with a record for drug use that will keep them from obtaining a lot of jobs unless they can get it cleaned from their record.
It will cause a lot of unneeded hassle because of a phase that a lot of people go through, and if nothing really comes of it, you can be sure of one thing. You WILL get your ass kicked.
Now, you may be thinking that you're able to take a bit of physical abuse to do the right thing, but you arent doing the right thing. Although you may not agree with drugs and they may be illegal, if anything comes of this you will be seriously messing up someones life. You're going to completely ostracize yourself from your peers for what basically amounts to no good reason.
I can't stress enough, this is NOT a good idea.
I don't do drugs, a lot of my friends do drugs. If I went around ratting on every single person I knew that was involved with or did drugs, I'm sure I could easily have 100 people arrested. However, it's not doing anyone any good, it's messing up a ton of peoples lives, and the personal repercussions that it's going to have on myself are to great to even imagine in the short time I'm taking to write this.
I'm going to say again, don't do anything. It is a stupid idea, it will have a huge negative impact on their life, as well as yours. Whatever any poster on here says that may seem agreeable with your stance, ignore it. I'm sure even if you consulted your parents they would probably agree.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
