okay, I'm a fan of heavy metal music and wrestling, but people I know have been telling me that I'm too old to watch wrestling or listen to heavy metal (I turn 20 on Friday).
do they actually have a point or are they just trying to pressure me to change?
Are you happy? If yes, then don't change a thing. I haven't seen WWE in like eight years, but I catch some TNA now and then.
Most 20-something males I know like hard rock/metal and watch MMA. I'm almost 30 and I certainly do. You're in good company.
For pot: you do know we can smell pot users after they have smoked pot for a while, right? The mechanism is identical to that of cigarettes, though the smell isn't as pungent.
That's interesting. I've never heard anyone say that before. I personally haven't found that to be the case, but maybe you have a sensitivity to the smell.
that seems like terrible general advice to any person short of retirement age.
You could be perfectly happy right now (e.g. Being 20 years old, leeching off parents, dating a nymphomaniac porn star, living paycheck to paycheck, getting drunk and high every weekend, not saving, watching TV 20+ hours a week, surfing every day, screwing around in college getting a 2.3 GPA on a useless degree, doing whatever)... But it's not necessarily what you should be doing to make you happy a year from now and the rest of your life.
Parents can be wrong about their kids and whether they need to grow up, but often they're at least partially right. Instead of looking at parental nagging as "buzz kill", look at it as well intentioned advice from a best friend who loves you more than any best friend you ever had, and knows your flaws better than anyone else... and has observed you for 20 years and knows exactly what your "hiding something face" looks like. People who changed your diaper 5000 times, and fed you with a small spoon 1000 times, and invested more money and time into your development than they have ever invested in anything.
You really think those people look at their 20 year old son, and are nagging you because they "don't get" metal and wrestling?
Their son could be pretty content with his lifestyle at 20, but blowing 2 or 3 years and THEN realizing it's not sustainable and he's not happy anymore, could be TOO LATE.
The "am I happy right now" limus test is definitely only a part of the way to figure out if you're on the right path. One big quality that separates successful people from unsuccessful people (maybe even as important as talent) is ability to delay gratification. If people around you are nagging you, then it's important to consider the possibility that you're pissing time away. That nice car, hot electronics, nice house and hot girlfriend when youre 26, are not going to come your way via lotto. Is ****ing round all day with TV, pot, drinking, how people become champions in sport? How about in life?
that seems like terrible general advice to any person short of retirement age.
Well, I was speaking specifically on the issue of metal and wrestling.
Personal responsibility is a much broader issue than taste in music and entertainment.
If his parents' problem is with drugs or behaviour or lack of responsibilty, they should say so. From what I gathered, the issue is entertainment, and as long as it doesn't break any laws, I say watch and listen to whatever you want.
But yes. If you have great ambitions, don't let anything stand in the way of them.
I myself found the price of ambition was too high, I wasn't willing to endure what it would take to live my dream and I couldn't muster the motivation to practice my art, and so I'm more than happy living day by day.
Money can't buy happiness, but starving won't buy it, either.
People are generally confused and give me weird looks when I say I like wrestling but it's never a "you're too old for that" it's more like the stereotypical "it's fake and stupid".
Eh. The way I see it, wrestling is basically like a soap opera for men.
When you move out you can do what you want man, who cares if your parents don't approve of you smoking? I bet they did it as kids. Everyone is a hypocrite
trust me, my parents prolly haven't done any of that stuff, my stepmom never went to college or anything and was pretty much a goodie two shoes and judging from what my dad says he did in college, he never went to a single party
Wow, when i saw this i thought you were a 40-something year old living at home. But 20? Your parents wither have absolutely no idea what they're talking about (which sounds like it might be the case for your mom), or they're trying to say something else. I agree that they're probably just concerned that you're leading an unsustainable lifestyle and won't turn out alright. If it's not hurting you, don't stop. However, they're concerned about you, so you might want to take a look at your life.
However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.
I don't think they have anything to be concerned about, I'm in university, getting pretty good marks.
It's not like I'm sitting around all day doing nothing
While I feel like most of the other stuff is under control, let me advise you to stay away from illegal drugs. Not because of them being better/worse for you than legal ones, based simply on the fact that if you get caught with them (via cops) and it goes on your record, it will greatly hurt future things such as a security clearance (or maybe things are different in Canada).

Musical taste is entirely subjective. You can listen to heavy metal and still be quite sophisticated and socially couthe. You can listen to classical and be an obnoxious a-hole.
As far as wrestling goes? It's not any worse than sitcoms, reality tv, pop music, or and other popular forms of entertainment. As long as you aren't body slamming your friends through chairs in the backyard.
However, because you doubted yourself, you might want to reevaluate your level of maturity. Maybe you do things that you consider to be childish and you know it? I don't mean childish like playing Magic or reading Harry Potter. I mean childish like yelling and being loud in public or doing things just for attention.
You're kind of at the point in your life where you bridge the gap between kid and adult. There's some things you should leave behind now and some that can come with.
Alcohol is far more dangerous than maruijuana. It's more addictive, more destructive and more available.
Your point being? I also recommended he stopped drinking too, didn't I? Arguing that something else is worse is not an argument. It's just as pointless as arguing that shooting someone is better than stabbing them. Both end badly.
Maruijuana may not be as destructive to other people, but it will damage your own life.
I'm not arguing the merits of legalization. Both substances will ruin your life if you let them, so it's better not to give them the chance.

Sorry to derail this thread but these statements are false. Marijuana doesn't ruin lives, it just happens to be there when lives get ruined. The idea of the loser pothead is propaganda, the losers are going to be losers whether they smoke or not. There are millions of people in this country alone that use marijuana daily with zero adverse effects. It is not physically addictive like alcohol and doesn't cause cancer like tobacco. It's just misunderstood because there is so much money to be made by keeping it misunderstood and illegal.
Again, sorry to derail the thread a bit but statements like these drive me nuts. They reek of ignorance about the subject.

Don't apologize for derailing the thread, the Marijuana use is relevant to the subject.
I'm not ignorant on the subject, I work in public health and have done my research on the topic, especially because this very topic recently came up through a bill in our State legislature. Let me reiterate something:
I'm not arguing the merits of legalization. Both substances will ruin your life if you let them, so it's better not to give them the chance.
I'm not talking about hypothetical 'what if it was legal and people were responsible', that is a completely different argument we'd probably be on the same side of.
I'm taking about the realities of a youth consuming an mind-altering substance on a regular basis. "Guns don't kill people" isn't a good excuse for letting a violent person have a weapon, but that is exactly your argument.
Of special concern are the long-term developmental effects in children and adolescents, who are particularly vulnerable to the drug's behavioral and psychological effects. The "amotivational syndrome," characterized by a pattern of energy loss, diminished school performance, harmed parental relationships, and other behavorial disruptions, has been associated with prolonged marijuana use by young persons.
It doesn't matter whether or not the marijuana causes it, what matters is that it's a harmful factor.
And of course Marijuana has harmful effects. At the bare minimum, smoke inhalation is very bad for you. If you can find me a study that says smoke inhalation is good for you, I'll change my opinion on that.
Again, this is not a legalization argument. This is an argument against an adolescent consuming a mind-altering substance. 'Other people can do it just fine' does not make it okay. At the very least it's a bad habit that should be kicked. I feel the same way about regular drinking, because the line between alcoholic and party drinker is a very thin one. The person consuming the substance is in the worst position to judge.
Not only that, but when you buy marijuana illegally imported from Mexican cartels or any organized criminal enterprise, you are financing them.
Its the American middle class that's funding the bribery and weapons of the Mexican cartels. That dollar that goes to paying off a judge or assassinating some sheriff in Juarez... most of it came from some ****bag American with disposable income who wants his marijuana bad enough that he doesn't give a **** who's getting killed in Mexico.
Not only that, but when you buy marijuana illegally imported from Mexican cartels or any organized criminal enterprise, you are financing them.

This is partially true, but it isn't exactly a high value item, just easy to mass produce and carries fairly lenient standards for punishment. Because it is an illegal trade, everything we know about the trade is a guesstimate at best, so I'm hesitant to say exactly how much it funds an international trade. US groups produce it as well, and 2008 saw about 8 million plants destroyed in the US.
Heres my philosophy: Like something? Cool. Is it dangerous/illegal/unhealthy/immoral? No? Then who cares. Let people tell you its lame. They are missing out. I am a 20 something as well, and I work with children as a teacher. You know what? Some of the stuff my students like is cool. I like Phineus and Ferb, Pokemon games are alright, and Avatar is a kick ass show. So what if I'm not 9 years old, my students love that I can relate to them, and I love that stuff. As long as you are having fun and no one is getting hurt it really doesn't matter what someone elses oppinion is.
I'm only 17, but my mom tells me all the time how playing cards, or xbox, or driving too fast, or fireworks are for "kids" and that I should stop.
You're 17, and your mom tells you that 'driving too fast' is for kids? Is she trying to encourage you, or something? O.o
There are plenty of kids who don't even get a license until they're 18, or later. (Or, in some countries, can't get a license until 18 or later.) Telling a 17-year old to slow down because driving fast is for kids doesn't make any sense at all.
Not only that, but when you buy marijuana illegally imported from Mexican cartels or any organized criminal enterprise, you are financing them.

I was expecting you to say you were like 45+ lol. no man, at 20, you aren't even old. I'm 29, and I don't feel old. I still feel like I'm 17 in spirit and body.

I don't know, i've heard of some decent strains of "headies" coming from mexico, not everything is skunk. But yea, no matter what purchasing marajuana is financing illegal activity, so is buying liquor for minors. It still happens though.
Age is the number of years you have been alive, not the type of person you are.
If you are 40 and like GI Joes, who cares. If you are 2 and have an Etrade account that you use, who cares.
Ironically, guys are buying up their childhood toys that their Moms threw away as they move up the income ladder. This is a common feature, and even women will have a bridal doll sometimes on display in their home. So even if "age" changes, from a societal perspective the use of said items tend to shift as well. So Optimus goes from being a toy to play with to something to look at.
There's even some guy that's an "artist" whose whole shtick is to build stuff out of Legos and sell it for thousands of dollars.

What? There is a huge difference between saying I'm funding illegal activity to my friend who has a plant in his greenhouse vs a Mexican drug cartel. There is nothing wrong with saying that pot will kill your ambition, which is true and any pot smoker will agree to it. Its a very real side effect that OP should keep in mind if hes trying to move forward in his life.
To make up horror stories is just hurting your cause since, once you find out its not the case you might question if everything you heard is true. You might even try more dangerous drugs thinking, they just say those things to keep people away from it.

Are you happy? If yes, then don't change a thing. I haven't seen WWE in like eight years, but I catch some TNA now and then.

That's interesting. I've never heard anyone say that before. I personally haven't found that to be the case, but maybe you have a sensitivity to the smell.
