Two weeks ago i decided i wanted to stop being over weight. since then i've lost 11 pounds (was 247.5), but i think i could be doing it better. i very recently added exercise to my routien (walked/ran 9 miles today), but i dont think ive been eating a healty diet. its not that i think im eating too much, but too little. for example, today at high school lunch (yuck) the only semi healthy thing they served was a penut butter and jelly sandwich (210 calories).
The reason that im trying to lose the weight is because of a girl, and i decided that once i reach 200 lbs i would do something about that, so that is my motivation.
So really i am looking for tips on diet and exercise. i have alot of nice place's to walk around, and i have a decent workout gym in my basement. i want to know what/how much of it i should be eating, and if i should be doing jogging/walking or weight lifting?
I am very greatful for any tips you guys give me, so thanks in advance.
as far as diet goes, time is more of an issue than money.
11 pounds in 2 weeks? what, are you starving yourself?
yes.
i have probably had 200-400 calories a day for the last 2 and a half weeks...except when i had a half a pizza one night ): . that combined with a decent amount of movement (mostly at work).
I'd go around to a few forums that deal with cooking and websites and perhaps even take some cooking classes after school at a community college or other such organization if you want to meet people, particularly women. The library, local book sales, and ect. also work for good recipes. Many women find it impressive if a man can cook well, this also gives you more control over your diet. And if you marry a woman that sucks at cooking, you save yourself 20 years choking down stuff you hate. There are things you can make and store in the fridge to eat as left overs for a few days to save yourself time. Equally, taking something to school would save you time from the lunch lines and allow you to shmooze more while people are eating while you're done.
I'd suggest in general to do sports with other people, especially at your age the social relationships are necessary and can be very good for encouraging you to lose weight if you get good people behind you. Looking at some studies a long time ago, people tend to take on the weight of their friends and spouse. So having active friends that can encourage a communal aspect to exercise gives you increased incentive to do something if you're into that. That and running with women in summer is fun for obvious reasons, swimming more so.

Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.
Individualities may form communities, but it is institutions alone that can create a nation.
Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
Run, jog, lift weights are all helpful. Starving yourself is not though. You have to try to change your life in a way that is sustainable, be it switching what you eat and drink or taking smaller portions.
eating 200-400 calories........yea, youll lose weight, but your going to go into starvation mode and take a guess what you body breaks down first? Fat? Nope Muscle? Mhm.
seriously, replace all empty calories (sugar, low quality fats) with lean protien and healthy fats and oils such as olive. Eat more fruits ang veggies as well
So really i am looking for tips on diet and exercise.
1. Do NOT starve yourself. That is the worst thing you can do.
2. Drink plenty of water. Most of the hunger you feel is actually dehydration. Also, drinking water instead of soda cuts calories ridiculously.
3. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition to the fact that fruit tastes awesome, your body is looking for nutrients when it gets hungry.
4. Balanced diet with moderation as to meat and large amounts of vegetables. Green and leafy is awesome.
5. Cook your own food, pack your own lunches, really refrain from eating out. Seriously, cooking from scratch is not that hard and is so much better for you.
5. Cook your own food, pack your own lunches, really refrain from eating out. Seriously, cooking from scratch is not that hard and is so much better for you.
This. Not only will you lose weight and notice an increase in your overall health, if you start to edge away from the processed stuff you find on most shelves, you will realize it is some of the most delicious food you have had in your life.

And all that the Lorax left here in this mess
was a small pile of rocks, with one word...
UNLESS.
Whatever that meant, well, I just couldn't guess.

I'm no nutritionist, but when I stopped having only a few big meals a day and started having multiple smaller meals with light snacking between, I saw a difference. My schedule doesn't always allow for it, but when it does I feel fuller longer and I tend to eat better (I get much better coverage of the food groups and daily recommended intakes), both have contributed to my overall health.
@op: for me, the two biggest helpers were portion control/moderation and eliminating expendable junk. Switching from pop and sugar-filled juices to water, skim milk and healthier juices was a huge help all on its own. Just that switch alone allowed me to drop 15 pounds over time. For the rest, just be patient and make changes slowly. I've always found that dramatic changes aren't prone to lasting.
yeah my school really doesnt have any healthy choices, so i suppose i will try and find a way to start bringing my own lunch. i work at a grocery store, so buying the right food wont be difficult.
as far as the starving myself goes, i think it was a good thing to do for short term because i used to be able to eat alot, now i cant eat much before i get full.
i used to drink a large number of diet cokes a day, while it has 0 calories, i dont really know its actual effect on my body, so for the most part im going to switch to water. (im trying to shake my physical addiction to caffine. gah headaches!)
i know some places suggest eating at least one good meal a week so that you dont break your diet, such as going out for a burger or something like that. that is something i plan on trying, and i will probably invite the girl im trying to get with.
are juices good? orange juice, apple juice, etc.... my GM at work scared me away from orange juice when she told me the allowed amount of GRUB juice to orange juice ratio ): but things like kool-aid so i can get a break from water, are those decent choices?
i read something about eating oatmeal, i definately have some of that at my place, but what do you suggest adding to it? the whole brown sugar/milk thing seems like it defeats the purpose of oatmeal...
meant/fruit and vegetable ratios? ive consiered cutting meat out of my diet for the most part, would that be a good idea? where else could i get protein?
and again, thanks for all the advice so far, and for the advice to come.
This. Not only will you lose weight and notice an increase in your overall health, if you start to edge away from the processed stuff you find on most shelves, you will realize it is some of the most delicious food you have had in your life.
I started to do this because of budget reasons... and since then I've been eaten the worst food of my life: I'm BAD at the kitchen.
Anyways, to the OP, have patience. That's KEY. First weeks you'll see great changes. After that, everything comes down to be patient.
Along with the good nutrition suggestions: for weight-loss exercise you want to focus on aerobic activity: running, jogging, biking, swimming and the like. Weight lifting won't hurt, but your most efficient way to burn calories and lose weight is with cardio.
To keep things simple, you want to make it a goal to burn more calories (via daily living as well as exercise) than you take in. As others have said, don't starve yourself, but keep a healthy diet.
An hour of reasonably strenuous aerobic activity four or more times a week, coupled with a 2500 calorie diet would be a decent start.

Get rid of this thought asap. Losing weight for someone else is not the way to do it. You have to want it for yourself.
This is because if you're doing it for someone else, you'll find reasons to abandon your plan if you either lose interest in her or start checking out other chicks.
Also, when you're doing something for yourself, you'll be less likely to deviate from your plan.
Start with a balanced diet. That means covering the entire triangle - meats, vegetables, carbs, fats. Make sure you're eating enough so you aren't starved. Starving yourself is just bad on many, many levels.
Limit your intake of processed foods. This means no sodas (cut out diet sodas as well if you can; if you can't, use them as treats - that means no more than 1 per day), no candy, no chips, no beer, no fried foods etc... If you're desperate for some sugar, cut open a watermelon and dig in!
My personal suggestions:
1. Exercise at a set time every day. That way, I would get around the "but I don't have time" excuse. This isn't possible on days when I'm on call, which are about once a week. And I give myself two days off from any gym time on days before big exams (which happen ~1/month).
2. For the specific exercises. Always do some weights. Not only will added muscle help you tone your body, but it'll also increase your metabolism (meaning you'll burn more energy just sitting there).
3. You need some cardio. If you hate running (like me), go for sports. At your height, have you considered volleyball or basketball? Once you get better at a sport, you'll want to improve. And when you want to improve, you'll force yourself to get better. You'll find that you will actually like running as it will help you when you're battling it out with your friends on the court/field/diamond/ etc...
4. Don't go food shopping when you're hungry. You'll end up buying junk food. At best, you'll give them away to avoid doing the no-no's I mentioned earlier. At worst, you'll blow through a bag of jelly beans.
5. Don't eat anything after 9 PM. I'm not sure if there is any scientific fact to this, but I noticed over the years that if/when I did eat after 8-9 PM, I ended up gaining weight. This tip comes from my sister, who has been tip-top shape her whole life.
6. The most important thing you need to understand is that you're not just looking to lose weight temporarily (at least I hope not). You're looking to change your lifestyle for the better. This means sticking to your plan. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. And convince yourself that you're doing this for yourself. If you get the girl, that's just icing on the cake.
what about jogging with weights...i suppose that will make it harder to bring my dog, but should i run without my dog, is it a good idea? or am i better off just jogging?
i usually have to drop my dog off half way through anyways, he wont let me run anymore because he gets tired, so could it work to jog with weights after bringing my dog home?
im not quite sure about all this stuff..
and a few days a week i work right after school, which takes away a decent amount of the time that i woudl be useing to jog. i still have the ability to bike to and from work. its about a 13 minute bike ride, so its not that bad, but its also not as good as a long walk or run.
home from school 3:15, work 4:00-10:00 is a very common day. ive considered getting up early before school (it would have to be at about 5:30) and jogging then.
Make sure you eat at 45% carb / 30% protein / 25% fat. Count your calories in/out, lower your sodium intake down to 100% (average american is 250%), keep sugar intake down. Eat only A&B foods, with one C food a week at most. Never eat Ds or Fs ever.

If you go ask a doctor, he/she'll tell you that any kind of exercise is good for you.
You're free to try it to see if it'll give you the results you want.
I've never owned a pet (nor did I ever have one while growing up), so I don't know how intense walking a dog can be. But I would imagine that you won't get the kind of results you'd get from a trip to the gym.
Here is what I would consider "good" exercise:
1. your shirt is completely soaked. Your whole body is in some pain. You're craving water.
2. You come home exhausted. But after taking a shower and resting a bit, you feel refreshed and ready to take on the world.
If you can get that from walking the dog, then you can by all means use that as your exercise.
Otherwise, you may still need to add a trip to the gym to your schedule. Go maybe three times a week. Then increase or decrease the amount of time you go depending on your schedule.
-----
Just remembered...
Have you had a checkup done lately? If not, get one done.
You want to make sure your body is ok before making this kind of change to your life.
It'll also let you know your blood sugars, cholesterol, etc.. You can use the HDL (good cholesterol) as a way to set goals for yourself.
------
Also, if you don't mind my asking ...
What is your family like? Are you about the same size as you? Are they generally smaller / larger than you?
As you know, genetics play a big part. For example: no matter how much I work out, I will never look as good as Sandra Bullock.

Q1: i get checkups fairly frequently, about every summer for boy scout high adventures, aswell as asthma checkups
Q2: My parents both used to be fairly over weight, but they have both lost alot of it. my mom has lost about 60 pounds, and my dad lost about 50. i have two older brothers, both healthy weight that exercise fairly frequently, and i have a younger brother that is following in my footsteps (not in a good way). but im slightly taller than my older brothers, aswell as my parents.

It looks like you're in a good position to make this change.
Congrats to your parents. I'm sure I'll be able to say the same to you once you get comfortable with whatever plan you choose.
Also, you're young, so your body will be able to adapt more easily.

I have asthma, I take advair diskus 250/50 twice a day. When I started football I ran a 10:30 mile. Now I run a mile day, twice a week. I would do more but I need to gain muscle because I lost a lot of weight and I'm on medication (normally it's the opposite). It's going to suck but it's definitely possible
Also you might want to download the picture I uploaded to mediafire. I printed out all five pages and put it in my dorm room to remind me what is healthy and what isn't.

Eat Chef Boyardee for lunch. Hot if there's a microwave, but it's good cold and has balanced nutrition even if there's a lot of salt (at 17 salt's not too big a deal). It doesn't go bad, can be stored anywhere, and is dirt cheap. Just grab some silverware at the school and go to town. I started doing it for work, and I will never look back.
At 6'2" and exercising I would have three 500-700 calorie meals with two snacks during the day about 200 calories each. Great snacks include beef jerky, nuts, dried fruit, etc. On weekends load up on vegetables, and try to eat lean meats.
Try to set workout goals and track them along with your weight. Maybe say I will run 3 miles without stopping by X date, and then try one of the many 5K guides to help you out. Once at 3 miles, you can try and reduce your times and try some weight lifting.
Try to drink a lot of water, and carry a bottle with you at school that you can refill in fountains. Try limiting yourself to one or two sodas a day, but cut back gradually - the caffeine shock can be rough for some.
myfitnesspal.com is my favorite website for helping with weight loss, and it's really easy to use. Also has a great smartphone app - and it's all free. SparkPeople.com is also good. You can get into a community of people trying to lose weight for some motivation.

the only semi healthy thing they served was a penut butter and jelly sandwich (210 calories).
what do you guys think of izze soda.....it's 70% Fruit Juice and has the carbonation of regular sodas
Just looked it up. So many carbs dude! 28-35 a bottle! A healthy protein shake would be preferable, or water. Fresh fruit would be far better, and it tastes better.
In my experience soda is one of those foods that you don't actually miss once you quit it. I occasionally miss chips but soda, ice cream, cookies, cake are all forgettable.

Otherwise, you may still need to add a trip to the gym to your schedule. Go maybe three times a week. Then increase or decrease the amount of time you go depending on your schedule.

540 Peasant cube- Gold EditionSomething SpicyQ1: i get checkups fairly frequently, about every summer for boy scout high adventures, aswell as asthma checkups

From what I just read about it, it looks ok. I mean .. it looks better than soda, but it still has some red flags.
-it's made from concentrate (that is not real fruit)
-"Each bottle is equal to a serving of fruit" - even if this is true, wouldn't you rather have real fruit?
-$59.99 for 24???!?!?!?!!?!?! - go with real fruit. It'll make less of a dent on your wallet.
It looks like you're in a good position to make this change.
Congrats to your parents. I'm sure I'll be able to say the same to you once you get comfortable with whatever plan you choose.
Also, you're young, so your body will be able to adapt more easily.
Best of luck!

What magical PB&J was this?
Just looked it up. So many carbs dude! 28-35 a bottle! A healthy protein shake would be preferable, or water. Fresh fruit would be far better, and it tastes better.
In my experience soda is one of those foods that you don't actually miss once you quit it. I occasionally miss chips but soda, ice cream, cookies, cake are all forgettable.
