its the perverbial "too much of a good thing". All the downsides to coffee, tea, and water only come up if you consume an abnormal amount. Actually, to the OP..... change your drink habits and see how much weight you lose...i promise you, youll see a difference.
yeah so far ive cut diet coke out of my diet, what do you guys think about arnold palmer half and half? (: (i havent been drinking it, but it is something that is avalible)
those 2 show you the good and bad. in the end, there both equal with tea in my mind being slightly ahead due to its flavor.
Also, mate tea or red tea (ok, no tea....but thats nitpicking) is a naturally sweet tisane that has the caffine equivilancy of coffee
I've studied out of an actual book, and talked to nutritionists, not just read the wiki pages Coffee is bad for your heart, and its long term effects on your resistance to mental diseases is negligible. A cup of coffee counts as -1 glass of water, while Tea counts as 1. Tea has a ton of healthy properties, but you probably already know about it. There is a vast consensus among nutritionists that tea is better than coffee.

It has so much freaking sugar, definitely as much as most sodas if not more. Super sweetened iced tea =/= good tea. Sugar addiction can be rough to kick, I know try cutting out down those drinks to 7 a week, then 6 a week, and so on.

still debateable in my head (im studying nutrition) . Tea and coffee's diuretic properties are what really makes people think that it dehydrates you. But the fact is that so do sodas.....at least with tea and coffee you get benefits.
and im sorry but, HOW IS COFFEE BAD FOR YOUR HEART, IT HAS MORE ANTIOXIDANTS THAN BLUEBERRIES.

fried can be a treat. id say that baking it is good, but blackened chicken is very good.
Do you like chile peppers?
what is blackend? and as far as chile peppers go, ive had chile sauces and things and i enjoy those. the place that i work only has fried chicken, but i have a decent selection of produse.
mainly what i have to choose from: bananas, peaches, nectarines, black/red plums, apples, oranges. the things such as green leafy things are sold in larger quantities, but i'm sure i could figure something out.
which of these fruit would be the best choice, and how many of them shpild i get?
there are also a lot of "steamers" in frozen, that is where the contents cook in the bag they come from, are those any good?
People need to realize he's trying to lose weight and get in shape, not get completely shredded. Let him eat too much salt and HFCS. Neither is that bad for you, and unless he has issues with his heart there's no reason to cut one of the best flavoring agents on the planet.
Let's not spin him into a worse eating disorder than starving himself for a girl will bring him.
yeah right now i just care about losing weight until i get to 200 pounds. once i'm there i plan on starting to do strength training, but until then what i care about most is burning body fat.

Strength training will help you get rid of fat and build muscle.
Muscle metab > fat metab = more muscle means you will burn more calories even when you're not doing anything. Don't skip the weights.

I never said to starve himself In my opinion it's always better to set your goals to be perfect, so you try your absolute hardest.

Fried foods use nasty oils and should never be eaten in my opinion. I personally boil my chicken, put it into a sandwich with red peppers and humus. It's delicious.
Regarding coffee, I'll make a super long post about it in a few hours when I'm not slacking off in uni classes

Bananas are packed with sugar and don't really contribute to losing weight.
If you're eating bananas as snacks, I would agree ... an apple may be better.
However, if you on a workout regimen, you will need bananas. I used to hate bananas (taste, texture, and the general shape ... yeah, I was immature). But then I found out that my leg cramps - which I would have after every practice regardless of how in-shape I was - started to disappear after I started eating bananas before and after practice.
Potatoes have more potassium in the skin, and any green vegetable has ten times the potassium a banana has. Bananas are nowhere near the best source for potassium.

You can buy chicken breast and boil it
Most fruits are excellent for you. Although bananas have copious amounts of sugar/carbs, I would never advise someone against eating fruit because most people don't get enough. After hearing something like 'bananas have so much sugar!' they stay away from bananas, and munch on some wheat thins . Oranges are a low-tier fruit. Kiwis taste great, have the same vitamin c as a 1+ glasses of orange juice with drastically less sugar. Apples are an excellent source of fiber, but you should also get fiber from your breakfast oatmeal
Make sure you don't eat too too much fruit, and have plenty of vegetables. Everything besides corn is good to go, I don't know much about cooked vegetables sorry.

what is something that one can add to oatmeal? i had plain oatmeal this morning (1/2 cup of oats) and it was difficult to eat (temp/flavor).
also, does the brand of oatmeal matter? i have one of the tubes of quaker oatmeal and thats what i had this morning.
edit:
oh, and if somebody would be kind enough to rank the best fruits and vegetables(1, 2, 3, etc...) that would be incredibly helpful. if somebody does, it would help if you try to stick woth more common fruits/vegetables. thanks!
Corn is fine to eat as well. Same with potatoes. They are still very low calorie and good for you, the problem comes with buttering them. The general rule of thumb for vegetables is to eat as much and as many colors as you can, and to eat them as undressed and raw as possible.

Here is the exact steel cut, unsweetened oatmeal I had over the summer
Unfortunately since I am on financial aid at college, and I'm stuck in a dorm room without a kitchen so I resort to unsweetend instant oatmeal. It's a step down but manageable. I put in protein powder, also strawberries. But you can really add any fresh fruit to oatmeal and it tastes great.
It's all about nutrients, you can't rank foods so much because you need to eat a variety to have all the nutrients to be healthy.

Corn has a bad carb/fiber ratio. I thought it was one of the worst vegetables? Am I wrong?
Potatoes are great for you though! Make sure they are unsalted and all that jazz, no sour cream either.

"Bad vegetable" has become a misconception. If it's a vegetable, and you're not dousing it in a sauce, then by all means eat it. A cob of corn is only 80-100 calories depending on size and sugar content, and the "don't eat corn" craze came in with the "don't eat potatoes" one because of the starches in corn. However, the starch in corn will be good to keep you full longer even without fiber (like white rice).
You do have to remember that corn is slightly more calories than other vegetables (like a potato), but anything that's not a leafy green has high(er) calories compared to other veggies (like tomatoes or carrots or even squash).
There's simply no reason to not enjoy corn with other veggies so long as it's not dominate in your diet just like anything else.
-----
Steel cut oats, barley, rolled oats (aka "old fashioned"), etc. are all great grains that are dirt cheap. Instant oats are not as good for you, but they are still cheap and convenient and not bad for you. Much better than my breakfast at any rate (I eat in my car so oatmeal is out).
-----
Eating what you like is so much more important than eating what's "best". There is a grouping of healthy foods that any palette likes, and it'll be different person to person. I like to eat almost every vegetable, but I'm picky about fruit (I often end up cooking fruit to eat it). I stick to zucchini, squash, broccoli, leeks, onions, sorrento peppers, peblano peppers, any leafy green, any sprout, root vegetabels, heirloom tomatoes, and many more - but I pretty much only eat cooked apples, craisins, peaches, blueberries, cooked berries, prepared figs, dates, prunes, fruit salads, tropical fruits, and baby watermelon.
what kind of things can you add to a potato? i suppose i could mash them and add garlic. is that good? and where can i go to find the nutritional facts for fruits/vegetables? i think that could be a useful tool.
and does anybody have any suggestions for what a good in class thing to snack on/eat in class would be? i cant really eat something like an apple because its too stickey, and then i have to do something with the core...
ahh.....blackened, its used primarily in cajun cuisine in louisiana.....basically you use a spice rub (blackening rub) and pan cook the chicken so said spices blacken. its healthy way to get lots of flavor
and here is a basic blackening rub
1 c. paprika
2 tbsp. garlic powder
1 1/2 tbsp. black pepper
1 1/2 tbsp. white pepper
2 1/2 tbsp. cayenne pepper
1 tbsp. oregano
1 tbsp. thyme
2 tbsp. salt
yup, it has salt....but its minute compared to the ton of spice. and the longer it sits before cooking, the better it is
what kind of things can you add to a potato? i suppose i could mash them and add garlic. is that good? and where can i go to find the nutritional facts for fruits/vegetables? i think that could be a useful tool.
one, wikipedia has the nutritional info on most veggies, fruits, exotic crap.....yes, i know its wikipedia.
and you can do almost anything with a potato. potatoes go good with bacon (its ok in small amounts, no 20 lbs. of it.), garlic, chives, (cheese, but thats unhealthy and really just masking).
There's a load of places to get good nutritional data: livestrong, self, etc. all are good search engines.
myfitnesspal lets you add entire recipies, so does sparkpeople - and registerign to save information is free. They also have databases.
You can also just google it and these sites come up to the appropriate page.
EDIT
Also, I like adding malt vinegar to potatoes for flavor after baking them for one hour in the oven at 350F (poke some holes in the skin and rub with a tiny bit of oil first). I also like to use salsa, ketchup (I prefer Hunts), or broccoli cheese cups that Green Giant makes.
Sweet potatoes are even better for you, and I like them on their own. Sometimes I will use BBQ sauce.
Regarding coffee, I'll make a super long post about it in a few hours when I'm not slacking off in uni classes
Nope, Macius although a some of the info on there seems a tiny bit faulty, coffee is much better for you than I initially thought. I was wrong. It raises blood pressure and has been associated with stress, which is why I said it was bad for your heart. I see tea as better, but coffee certainly isn't bad for an adult. Sorry

Eat protein, fat, dietary fiber, and lots of vegetables.
This will allow your body to use ketones (soluble fats) for energy (instead of the sugars you consume that stores).
Eggs, steak, pork, chicken, fish, whey (concentrate has more fat than isolate) are all good sources of protein and/or fat.
The only carbohydrate you should be consuming dietary fiber.
Many fighters, lifters, and other athletes use this diet to reduce body fat and gain muscle mass/density.
