If you don't know, a "brony" is a young man who is a fan of the new show "My Little Pony; Friendship is Magic." No, don't ask me what it is so many guys like this show, I honestly don't understand it and am starting to get worried.
I watched a few episodes of the show thinking that it could be like other cartoons like "The Batman" or "Avatar," which are dark and surprisingly mature at times. A really good example would be "Invader Zim," which was actually watched more by teenagers than kids and very dark. However, I really didn't see any of that.
My question is this; Is this show so popular because of something I don't see, or because of certain "fantasies" people have?
Well.... there is 4chan, which is full of the toilet of the internet, so it might just be an elaborate troll against society.
BTW, have you heard of clopfix?
I'll put this bluntly. If a really cool, unique guy went up to a normal girl, and is ugly, he's weird. if he goes up and is hot, then he's cool and unique.
Standard
It's like watching grass grow, except it's ridculously expensive.
it might just be an elaborate troll against society.
My take is that MLP fandom began as trolling, sort of like an internet-wide game of "gay chicken", replacing "gay" with "brony". So instead of two presupposed straight males doing homoerotic things to one another to see which one will tap out first, you have a large number of young adults and teenagers telling each other to watch a children's cartoon to see how long they will watch it. Given large random samples of males, you will find that there is a percentage of them who are actually homosexual, and given large random samples of young adults and teenagers, some of them will actually like MLP. So it started out as a mass troll, but enough people enjoyed what they were being trolled with to start their own subculture. It's a similar phenomenon to people discovering that they enjoy listening to Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up.
A stark difference between MLP fans and Rick Astley fans is seen in the breadth of their culture. This can be explained by the quantity of episodes to discuss and the quality of the artwork. There are a multitude of characters for each viewer to think about and identify with. The art is appealing to young adults; it isn't new-age 3d garbage. The traditional 2d style and solid coloring, along with the number of different emotions and attitudes expressed by the ponies, makes it easy to screenshot, shoop, and draw original art that convey the kinds of expressions people would want to post on an imageboard. The effectiveness of these images helps proliferate the culture.
The popularity of MLP is also very timely. The show was created in a time of extreme political correctness, when it is improper to publicly shame someone for being different, so long as they are not breaking any laws. Bronies are pushing the boundaries of what is socially acceptable because they can do it with minor backlash. Are bronies now trolling us? As someone who is not a brony, I do not know.
El Pato hit the nail on the head. As an added example to his points, I hated blue grass music until college. I won a bet against a friend after listening to Yonder Mountain String Band for 7 hours straight without tapping out. He tapped out after 4 and I kept going because I sort of liked it. Now I listen to YMBS almost every day.

First of all, seriously, no. The people that make 4chan have this bad reputation are not the 4channers. It's people like you. I'll agree with you that /b/ is the toilet of the internet, but us bronies have our own board now, /mlp/. Second of all, clopfics represent a very small amount of the community. Also, r34.
As to the OP: No. Watching MLP is nice, not because of some perverse joke, but because it's well written. I will never understand why people enjoy the Black Veil Brads, or any heavy metal, but I don't seek to. This article gives a good idea for you.

I also sometimes find underlying messages about society and such in MLP:FIM. While I can't recall the episode name, its the one where the apple orchard was almost put out of business by 2 traveling salesmen. I came away with: "If its too good to be true, it most likely is."

I'll give you that much, there's shows like Young Justice or Avatar that have better storylines. Certainly adult shows like Battlestar could pull off some more complex stories and themes. However, a lot of those shows tend to have Easter eggs or involved much more complex characters or at least two dimensional.
The Kardashians are just like the plague of talks hows during the 80's and 90's. A few will survive probably into 2020's, but even now people are bifurcating into different shows. Those with actual writing skills and those that are more staged for a modern day soap opera.

I think Faust put it best when she said that "cartoons for girls don’t have to be a puddle of smooshy, cutesy-wootsy, goody-two-shoeness". Very little of the show has to do with stereotypical "girly" interests, like romance or tea parties or fashion. It's really a show with gender-neutral topics presented in a gender-specific shell.
BTW, the "Faust" above refers to Lauren Faust, not the guy who made a deal with the devil, or the guy with a paper bag over his head.
Why worry about other people's choice in entertainment? As long as they're not harming anyone, why worry?

YOU ARE SURPRISED BY A MANTICORE! IT QUICKLY SHREDS YOUR FLESH AND DEVOURS YOU!
I actually enjoy the show. I'm, I guess, what you would call a "brony". I don't go around making a big deal of it, I'm not obsessive, but it is something I'm a fan of. I have a shirt, I have a Mug, and I watch the show when I have the time. I givethe occasional brohoof, but would just the same give a normal knuckle bump, and thing nothing of it.
I enjoy sitting down and watching a mindless cartoon sometimes, and MLP does that for me. I watch superhero cartoons with actual focus, because I love superheroes. I can't watch things that are just outright stupid, even if they ARE funny, so things like spongebob are out usually these days. Avatar is done for right now.
So, I startedto atch MLP, of my own accord. It was just on one morning, so I checked it out, and thought it was hilarious. It's entertaining, funny, and not something you have to catch daily to be a fan of.
So, there, from someone who no longer uses 4chan, doesn't go all-out for the ponies, or anything- I just like the show, I found it on my own, and I still have a fairly functional lifestyle.

All I know of Bronies was from watching grown men run around in pony outfits at conventions. Draw your own conclusion as to what my opinion is.
As always, there are different levels of fandom. I won't fault anyone for enjoying the show - but it very much appeals to the 'Weird for the sake of weird' crowd that that amps it up to 11. I do, however, dislike the manchildren that ruin certain fandoms for everyone.
So, in summary, I have no problem with the show, but a lot of problems with grown men wearing footie pajamas that look like ponies.
Seems like people in this thread don't know what "trolling" is.
Liking something that you internally accept is bad is not trolling, that's being ironic.
Trolling is doing something for the sole (or primary) purpose of irritating others.
That being said, I think some bronies like MLP due to irony, while others legitimately enjoy the show. I've seen 3 episodes, and the show really isn't bad. It's not really good either.
I find it really funny that people who play magic, and get judged by most everyone they know that knows this are willing to judge people that enjoy mlp. It's not something that I'd ever find fun, and I'll laugh if I see a mlp convention in real life, but I really don't think it's right to care what people watch or don't watch.
It's the average educated youth deliberately trolling the society into watching a crap show, by making an insanely huge propaganda.
Anyone with half a brain will stop watching a show that they dislike. Especially a show that, by watching and admitting to enjoying, puts one at risk of social castration.
"So bad it's good" shows are stated to be crap. Things like The Room or Troll 2. If My Little Pony is really crap and people are watching it for the camp factor, why would they lie and say that it is a good show?
It's a video of a dude unboxing his Pony toys from McDonalds happy meals. I'd say that's a win for the trolls, especially because the guy is autistic, which makes the vid extra lulzy for people into that sort of thing.

Troll 2 was a great movie.
Quote from wikipedia »
As neither Fragasso nor Drudi (the movie's creators) spoke fluent English, the shooting script was written in the same broken pidgin dialect in which they both spoke; the cast would later recall that the script was only given to them scene-by-scene, and that they had difficulty understanding their dialogue as written. Some of the cast members offered to correct their lines to sound more grammatically and syntactically correct, but said that Fragasso demanded they deliver their lines verbatim.

So you're saying that it didn't start as a troll, it started as an interest in Lauren Faust, then people began watching the show, and it snowballed into a culture bigger than the show? That makes sense. Thanks for providing your perspective. I should have done some research before speaking from my ass.
I have some questions to stir discussion, since I'm more interested in hearing from an insider than an knowledgeable judge.
What makes MLP so popular amongst bronies when, as stated earlier, there are plenty other high quality cartoons?
Do you think MLP would have become popular if it wasn't perceived as an ironic mismatch of intended audience? It is very rare that a whole subforum is devoted to a cartoon. (not that /mlp/ is a board for a cartoon, it's really a board for the subculture following the cartoon). If bronies weren't hated but were accepted, and there was no shock value to being a brony, would there be less appeal for an outsider to become one of them?
As an adult, have you ever bought toys or clothes or other merchandise for another cartoon you enjoyed? Have you ever bought such products related to MLP? If so, why?
Is MLP a fad? If it is not a fad, do you think you will still be a brony 20 years from now? How does that make you feel? If bronies are brought together through discussion and appreciation of MLP, but are bound together because of the depth and quality of their own culture, do you think there could ever be a new medium for bronies to connect, or is MLP a defining, irremovable part of their identity?
Considering there are those of us in our 30's and 40's that play a card game, video games, and read/watch things with super heroes. I'm not really too concerned about "Bronies" triggering the collapse of western civilization.
Considering, one of them, whose a rightist has a decent job in the nuclear industry or something of that nature with energy. Doesn't exactly strike me those fans are losers, either.
The people you really have to watch for are the ones that spend all their money on superfluous **** and can't handle their cash. Gambling, drinking, rampant overconsumption (which can be anything), and ect. We as a civilization have survived comic books, video games, Satanic cults in daycare centers, Pokemon, and a plethora of other storms. My Little Ponies aren't going to start a Stalinist purge against all non-My Little Pony worshippers.

Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
What makes MLP so popular amongst bronies when, as stated earlier, there are plenty other high quality cartoons?
1) Ease of access. Full episodes are available for viewing on YouTube.
2) People have limited time and can't try out every single thing recommended to them.
3) Bronies actually watch those other cartoons too.
Do you think MLP would have become popular if it wasn't perceived as an ironic mismatch of intended audience? It is very rare that a whole subforum is devoted to a cartoon. (not that /mlp/ is a board for a cartoon, it's really a board for the subculture following the cartoon).
The "ironic mismatch" thing does help its popularity. Some people will get curious as to what draws grown men to watch it. Then they decide to watch it for themselves.
AND THEN THEY JOIN THE HERD.
If bronies weren't hated but were accepted, and there was no shock value to being a brony, would there be less appeal for an outsider to become one of them?
See above. Fewer people would get their toes wet so fewer people would become bronies.
Also, this sounds like poisoning the well - it's assuming that bronies enjoy being socially unacceptable, or that liking My Little Pony is shocking. Seriously, now that you know what a brony is, will you be shocked when a man tells you that he likes My Little Pony?
As an adult, have you ever bought toys or clothes or other merchandise for another cartoon you enjoyed? Have you ever bought such products related to MLP? If so, why?
No and no.
Side note: The card sleeves that I use are plain. No designs on them.
Is MLP a fad? If it is not a fad, do you think you will still be a brony 20 years from now? How does that make you feel?
It seems kind of Red to say this, but here goes: The status quo is fine. New episodes come out every Saturday. A third season is in production. What does the future hold? I dunno lol.
As to the 20 years? When you bought a NES, did you think you'd still be playing it now? How does that make you feel? Maybe you've moved on to something better. Maybe you still revisit it out of nostalgia. Maybe those few years you spent on it were enjoyment enough for you, and as far as you're concerned your initial investment has already paid for itself.
If bronies are brought together through discussion and appreciation of MLP, but are bound together because of the depth and quality of their own culture, do you think there could ever be a new medium for bronies to connect, or is MLP a defining, irremovable part of their identity?
A brony is by definition a male fan of MLP. Sure, if bronies get together because of something else then they're not bonding as bronies, but as fans of whatever that something else is. If I play Magic with my buddies I'm bonding with them as a fan of Magic; if I watch football with my buddies I'm bonding with them as a fan of football.
People like it because other people told them to like it.
Do you have any evidence, or is that an assertation? I won't deny that a good part of the enjoyment is the community, but it's not like we go around yelling at people to like MLP or die. They usually see it on 4chan or reddit or whatever internet website they browse, decide to watch a couple episodes, and then they like it. A fair number of them don't, but hey, that's their tastes, the same reason I don't understand why people like Dragon Ball Z, but I'm not going around saying that everyone who likes it is a troll.
I watched a few episodes of the show thinking that it could be like other cartoons like "The Batman" or "Avatar," which are dark and surprisingly mature at times.
Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.
Individualities may form communities, but it is institutions alone that can create a nation.
Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
1) Ease of access. Full episodes are available for viewing on YouTube.
2) People have limited time and can't try out every single thing recommended to them.
3) Bronies actually watch those other cartoons too.
The "ironic mismatch" thing does help its popularity. Some people will get curious as to what draws grown men to watch it. Then they decide to watch it for themselves.
AND THEN THEY JOIN THE HERD.
No and no.
Side note: The card sleeves that I use are plain. No designs on them.
