This card has interested me ever since it was spoiled, and I've been tempted to cut Nemesis of Reason for it. I see from the comparison thread that 18 people are running it, but I haven't heard any of the awesome stories that I was hoping to hear. For those of you that have tried it, how has it worked? It's not a classic finisher like Oona or Nemesis, and I guess plays more like Tezz in the third UB slot as a toolboxy build-around card. If you are pushing reanimator, is it worth playing?
Supporting reanimator won't matter much as far as this guy's card quality is concerned.
It's a good card, and it can run away with the game CA wise if left unchecked. It's good with collections of small/medium-sized utility creatures. If you're not supporting the artifact.dec, I could see playing it over Tezz. I like it more than Oona and Nemesis too; it's the far more fun and interesting creature.
He's in my cube now, and he's fine. Sometimes he can be crazy! That said, I'm not married to the Lich, and I'll probably be replacing him with the new Strix in Planechase 2.
I played this guy last Friday in my deck and the one game where he came into play the opponent suggested I remove him from the cube due to being a bit too powerful. Then again that same opponent made two play errors that just let me run away with the game when he could have won, one being that he didn't attack with Sable Stag and the other that he forgot he had a Mishra's Factory that could block my Shadowmage and deny me the 8th land I needed.
That game I had 7 mana in play and cast Entomb, after brainstorming and failing to hit a land, end of turn to get a Yosie in my yard to make sure I didn't die to Sable Stag next turn, as I was at three life. I drew my card for the turn and it wasn't a land, I swung in with my Shadowmage and my opponent missed the block, I drew my card and it was the land I needed. I played the land and played his Elesh Norn, which wiped his board of a pesky River Boa.
In short, Lich is crazy good when he needs to be and can easily warp a game.
I had this guy in my U/B control deck last week, and on average, he brought back about one creature each time I played him. I didn't have too many other "must kill" creatures in my deck, so the Lich usually ended up eating a piece of removal the turn after I dropped him. That said, as long as I had some open mana right after casting him, it was a surefire way to eek out extra value.
Like eidolon, I replaced Nemesis of Reason with the Lich. I think after a few drafts, I can safely say that the power level of Nemesis is a fair bit higher in a limited environment. The Lich feels like a much more interesting and interactive card, though, so we're willing to leave him in for a while.
I'm currently wavering between this and Oona in my list. I currently run this, but have been trying to shift toward mill or the like for blue decks as a subtheme, so I'm not sure which direction I want to take.
