I have a feeling this card will look amazing in foil.
So based on the spoilers we've seen so far it looks like there is a cycle of "pushed" efficient mythic rare creatures. Seasoned Pyromancer in red, Ranger Captain of Eos in white, and Hexdrinker in green. I could see Urza, Lord High Artificer being the blue mythic in this category. Long story short... I'm excited to see the black one and I hope it's awesome.
I’ve been patiently waiting for more green 1-drops like Kessig Prowler to draw more people into green aggro. I think this card is a fantastic complement to Kessig and would hope to find a cut elsewhere.
This card is a goddamn monster. Some decks can’t ever beat a 6/6 Progenitus, and if you just play this on turn 4 you get to make a 4/4 semi-Hexproof that threatens to become that next turn. And the activation being colorless is insane: you can splash this! It’s like Untamed Kavu except instead of every mode being underwhelming, every mode is awesome. This is the best green 1-drop outside of mana dorks, and I’d play it in all cubes.
Even if you couldn't split the level up costs, this is better than half or more of the green four drops I play at 720. As is it beats them all.
I like how this card fits into all flavors of green decks - aggro if you support it, midrange and all the way to hard ramp. I can see hard ramp decks play it as a finisher against control decks.
I absolutely love this card, and it is insane that they are printing it.
“Green aggro” has shaped up exactly how I had hoped several years ago. It has the unique identity of being an aggressive midrange deck where your 1-drops get large and you curve into 5s instead of 4s. This card gives us just about the density of 1-drops we need for this type of aggressive deck. By the way we are very happy to not run Jungle Lion in our Cube...
I think this card is messed up and will be easily including it even without supporting green agro.
Though in a non beat down ramp strategy it’s merely fine.
The green figure of destiny that doesn’t require a mono colour mana base and is probably better than figure of destiny too heh
I don't run green aggro anymore, but I still do run Warden of the First Tree and will run this because they're good outside of dedicated aggro shells. As removal has gotten stronger over the years, I want things that are more resilient to them (especially in green). About time green gets its own True-Name Nemesis / mini Progenitus.
This card is absolutely outrageous. Even just G 2/1 // 8G 6/6 Progenitus would be strong, and this is so much better (though not strictly, since the progrnitus mode is vulnerable to shocks for a turn). Obviously nutso if you support G aggro, but an instant staple even if you don’t at all.
I used to have Kessig Prowler in. I took it out to focus green more on ramp, but this is exactly the kind of card I've been hoping for for a long time. I'm strongly considering putting Kessig Prowler, Pelt Collector, Warden of the First Tree, Experiment One and Hexdrinker back in.
When you all build green aggro decks, what do they usually look like? Do you still run elves in the same deck, or do they get pushed out by the 1-drop aggro cards?
Depends but aggro green can definitely use a couple elves. One of the reasons I really like the new Domri is that he turns your mana dorks into relevant attackers. My aggro green decks are almost always Gruul.
I'd be curious to hear other cuber's experience with green aggro and mana elves. It's kind of a funky archetype.
Our green aggro decks absolutely have elves. Consider these decks as aggressive midrange strategies that curve out at 5 and utilize the elf bodies and extra mana in a variety of ways to provide lategame power.
I play aggressive midrange decks that feature elves, but that's a different deck than aggro. I don't typically play Jungle Lions and mana dorks in the same deck.
I don’t cube green aggro anymore, but that’s not going to stop me from slamming this. It’s a 3G 4/4 with protection from instants that eventually grows into an unstoppable threat. You don’t need to have green aggro in your cube to play this monster of a card. It’s good in Ramp, aggressive midrange, you name it.
I have no aggro 2/1s to cut for this card, but I’ll find another cut.
My Cubes - The Busted Cube. A fully functional, almost 100% custom cube. The project started out by asking "What if other colors got cards on the power level of Mana Drain,Ancestral Recall, and Time Walk?" Draft and enjoy!
Hexdrinker - G
Creature - ?Snake
Level up - 1
Level 0 - 2/1
Level 3-7 - 4/4, Protection from instants

Green aggro card, anyone?
Grows faster than Kessig Prowler, too.

Yeah I was thinking of this as a 3G 4/4 with Protection from Instants that you can curve T5 into a mini-Progenitus - not bad!

And yea, this creature is WAY better than the Kavu.
