awakening has far to great a cost. The fact that you have to commit resources over several runs means that these cards need to be stronger than normal to make you want to use them. Companions problem was not in the mechanic itself. It was in the insignificant restrictions combined with a few overpowered designs. If you want to fix it you at least need to keep the part that made it good. The ready access to a useful card. Locking away the cards behind a three turn commitment is even harsher that the cost of 3 added to balance companions.
Companion is a very well-tapered ability by functionality. It's just that the requirement are very awkward, and that's hard for people to grip within their general attention span. It demands one take a step back, and evaluate all the options; also the effectiveness (is it even worth it); and also remember that you don't need to use it at all, and the card is just as good if you run it normally.
To improve upon Companion would require something just as simple. A single, simple requirement to cast the spell from outside the game.
