Kind-of hard to understand, so I'll give a little example. You pay UBW to pay for Uneasy Alliance, so it is a blue, white and black card. Whenever you tap a land for black mana, you may pay 2 life and add WU to your mana pool. Whenever you tap a land for blue mana you pay pay 2 life and add WB to your mana pool etc.
