No problem, Darkfire. As long as you've got the ideas and you can handle posting the rounds and keeping score and whatnot, anybody can host.
Monkey, I think we have people lined up through January, but we'll see. Here's the latest list:
MeatballWarrior (?)
ImpulsiveKnowledge (?)
Asrama
ohmusama
Doom Lich
Twilight Kiwi
Monkey Playing MTG
Darkfire Games
MeatballWarrior sent me a message saying he couldn't host when he was up for October, but brasil_dude was signed up earlier anyhow, so he is doing that, and I will check with MeatballWarrior again towards the end of the month. Just going down the list.
Oh, and as for finding the thread, it is in my sig and I post all over this forum, that is usually the fastest way. Other CCL people are welcome to sig this thread if they feel like it.
I just sent a PM to Asrama, since I don't think MeatballWarrior and ImpulsiveKnowledge wanted to host yet. I am going to be without computer this weekend, so if Asrama can't do it, hopefully he will post here and the next person on the list can take over. Should have asked a couple of days ago, sorry.
I'll admit the thought of hosting a CCL would be fun, but that list is long. Either way you could toss me on a list for hosting one somewhere along the line. LOL
1. I have a rough idea of how the scoring works, but would it be possible to get a more thorough breakdown?
To break it down more:
The score you receive each round is equal to: X = (Number of points earned)/(number of points possible)*100.
Each team has a certain number of judges judging the members of the team. Each judge is allowed to give up to 3 points to a certain member of that team, which is a first place finish in the team.
Also possible is that the certain team member has a opportunity to be a judge for another team. Doing critiques and posting a top3 is an additional 2 points.
Therefore, the total number of points possible is 3*judges + 2, the amount of points possible for any given member.
PointsEarned(Team member X, Team Y) = JudgesOf(Y)*Points(JudgesOf(Y)) + Critiques?(X)
To sum it all up in a concise sentence, the scoring is now on a percentage scale, instead of just points earned.

Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.
Hmm... Even though I'm fairly far down the list of hosts, would it be a good idea to go ahead and get a banner made? (Also, were MeatballWarrior and ImpulsiveKnowledge just skipped or entirely removed from the list?)

Question, do people feel that the current CCL schedule is doable? I'd rather things get wrapped up in a month and not extend really far into the next month like they have for the last few months and look to do this month as well. We always have a lot of drops as well. What do people think about these options:
Leave as is, running over is ok
Adhere to strictly timed rounds - it used to be 3 day submissions and 2 day critiques, which should do 3 "Swiss" rounds and three elimination rounds in 30 days. I guess the last round goes to week-long poll, so you have 2 or 3 days extra.
Cut a round - it seems like this would either result in 2 team rounds cut to Top 8 or 3 team rounds cut to Top 4.
This seems like a totally realistic time-table, even for those who like to create deep arcane stories, as they get three days per round (more in the Sign-Up and Finals time).
The Running over is mostly due to each round not coming up in quick succession. There's been a round or two (as of late) that have been delayed because not everyone had finished their submissions/critiques. Maybe I'm being unobservant, but I can't find the next thread until a day or two after the last thread was supposed to close and the next was supposed to open. That padding between rounds is really more what's pushing the CCL past its monthly borders.
The tighter submission restrictions would help, especially if it's as tight as the above schedule. Also, I'm not sure what the general idea about critiques is but all that I get that is required from the rules is a:
1. Gerrard's Mom
2. Moss Elemental
3. Darkfire Games
Anything else is a courtesy to your fellow leaguers, and if you don't have time to do a complicated story or critiques in a round, all that's required is the card your made and your Top 3. Everything else will fall into place.
Question, do people feel that the current CCL schedule is doable? I'd rather things get wrapped up in a month and not extend really far into the next month like they have for the last few months and look to do this month as well.
I apologize for that. I guess I'm just too nice a person to let people with legitimate excuses get eliminated for missing a round. Also, life.
I feel that Darkfire's schedule, is appropriate. However, I think the the biggest issue is with the hosts, since, as I can attest, real life meddles with things which delays round posting. I'm not quite sure how to remedy this other than to have an "impartial backup", or some non-playing user, have access to the month's challenges so that they can be posted in a timely manner. This would, however, require that someone not play for a given cycle, which doesn't seem too great.
The second largest issue, is, in my opinion, the timing for critiques. Although it would be far more hectic to do so, if the critique period for a given round occurred during the creation period for next round, I'm sure it would save tons of time. However, this too comes with inherent flaws.
Ultimately, I think we should use the timed round system, but grant the host some leeway in tardiness and/or timing, since certain challenges are far more time consuming than others (see the last round of October, for example).
One possible explanation for rounds taking longer is that it has become more difficult to calculate scores (it's not that hard, but it's harder than it was). Even when rounds go up on time, it's pretty common not to have scores first thing. Please note that I'm not blaming any recent hosts or anything, I'm just trying to make sure this is the best way to run the contest.
The scores are not actually that hard to calculate, assuming you understand how the scoring system works. Excel really is a wonderful piece of software.
It could be nice to give an incentive to those that post within the first an second day. Something like "if you post your card by 12am today you get 2 points, if by tomorrow only one point." I think this could make the calculations harder, but am not sure. Any toughts?

Anyway, Round 1 is up. As for the idea, I'm thinking if people send in their cards within the first couple days, I would give them just a small bonus into their totals. I'm thinking just a flat 5 points, added after calculations. Nothing too big, but it would be a slight reward.
Though, what of editings? People would obviously put down placeholders, then edit to finish their cards.
As for my challenge: I know that the first round will start things off with a big thing, but don't worry. This is the only 2-card round, until maybe later. Maybe.
My challenges are designed to specifically test on how you will flavor your cards in accordance to "elements". Of course, mechanics are sought after too, since a good card will earn you high ranks.
You're free to try whatever you want, but technically there is a way to enforce this on the books: ending the round on time. You can just cut people off at the deadline, especially for critiques, since that's where they get free bonus points. I actually like to have a set deadline that I can remember for rounds, and I often come back to them the day of the deadline to get it done after thinking for a couple days. Critiques can be done more or less right away though, which is why they have usually had less time.
Another thing that may help speed things along is to write out your thread headings in advance. If you've already got all seven rounds (including the sign-up) planned out, it'll take less than an hour to copy in all the rules, declare the challenge and set the deadlines accurately.
