Hey, I usually post in the main CCC forum, but this post doesn't have any cards I've designed in it, and isn't a strict design discussion, so it seems to fit here.
I have a particular answer in mind, but there may be other answers that technically work. Hopefully somebody figures out which answer I'm looking for. It's just for fun/learning.
What do each of these 44 obscure Modern-legal creatures have in common, from a design standpoint?
The answer I'm looking for is fairly specific, so I'm not sure if anyone will completely get it. If you're on the right track or have part of it, I'll give some hints. If you think you have part of it, post what you've got.
This exercise stems out of something bigger I've been working on the past week, a sort of discussion and/or reference list that I think other designers here are going to find useful and interesting
I'll continue to work on that project and post it in the main CCC forum when it's ready.
The answer can be phrased: "Each card on the list is the creature that has the highest ________ of any creature without drawbacks for its ________ and ________."
Crap, these are really hard! For the first one, maybe robotic creatures from scars block? Probably too obvious though...

Two things:
1) That's definitely true about the first bunch, although it wasn't what I was thinking.
2) Your response shows me I need to clarify something! All the cards in the OP are part of the same question (or puzzle). They're not 6 separate games, sorry about that. I separated them by colour, but I should have said that they're in no particular order. I'll clarify the OP, thanks.
Here are a few off the top of my head. I don't think any are what you are thinking of, though:
1) Unless I've missed a card or two, none of them are legendary.
2) Each creature's name consists of some sort of noun describing what the creature is alongside some sort of adjective. The adjective either describes the creature itself or its affiliation with something or some group.
3) At least some of them encouraging going wide rather than tall.

They're creatures that pass the vanilla test? They may or may not encourage certain themes in limited? These things really don't seem to have much in common.

Quite true, they aren't legendary. None of the cards on the list are multicolored, you're right, but the list could be expanded to include multicolored cards. You asked about Sluiceway Scorpion, and after a quick check, yes it could be added to the list. Now I'm curious if you made a lucky guess, or if you're close to figuring it out! As for the card names, interesting that you noticed that, but it's not about their names at all.
I had to look up the vanilla test, since I don't read/watch any card design on the "mothership" or other official sources nowadays. So sometimes I don't know the current lingo that MarkRo is using.
But you're essentially onto something. Yes, it has something to do with the mana costs, the powers, and the toughnesses.
I'll add these to the first post:

Those are interesting guesses. The closest is "the mana cost is .. efficient with the power and toughness". Somebody already uncovered that "it has something to do with the mana costs, the powers, and the toughnesses" but you're right that it is related to efficiency. You're pretty close to naming exactly what I'm thinking of!
I'll throw out a few more cards that could be added to the list.

The way this is phrased immediately made me think of "the mana cost is the most efficient with the power and toughness". That means if you search all cards with that given power and toughness, each of those cards is among the cards with the lowest converted mana cost you find. I checked doing exactly that in Gatherer with some of the mentioned cards: with Glass Golem, Disowned Ancestor and Alpine Grizzly that is true. But then there is Wolfir Avenger in hint 5 and Kalonian Tusker in the OP, which are both 3/3 but for different costs. The Tusker is indeed among the 3/3 creatures that cost less if you exclude those with some kind of drawback. That, by the way, would be true also for Fleecemane Lion, which should be in the list if my interpretation was true, while the Wolfir shouldn't be there. Clearly this is not it, but I feel I may not be that far...

I was going to say they are the highest converted mana cost to combined power/toughness ratio for each mana cost without a downside.
However I then saw that both Rotting Fensnake and Rotted Hulk are on the list together when Rotted Hulk clearly has the higher combined P/T.
This seems to conflict with HINT #6
Clarification: When I said before that no two cards on the list have the same casting cost, that's clearly not the case considering Rotting Fensnake and Rotted Hulk (and others). What I should have said was no two cards on the list have the same casting cost, power, AND toughness. So for example, there is a 5/1, a 4/2, a 3/3, and a 2/5 each for 3B. As an additional hint, if Wizards were to print a 3/4 without drawbacks for 3B, the 3/3 would no longer be on the list.

Very very good, bravelion! You're really narrowing it down. Your cousin Fleecemane Lion WOULD be on the list, that's correct.
Regarding Tusker and the Wolfir both being 3/3, you've noticed that the list has duplicate instances of power and toughness (like 3/3), and it also has duplicate instances of casting costs, but no duplicates of casting cost, power, AND toughness. So Watchwolf would NOT be on this list. The reason? Essentially, it is tied with Fleecemane Lion for all purposes of this exercise. The reason Lion would get the nod over Wolf is because the Lion has an added bonus. If Lion didn't exist, Watchwolf would still be on the list.
You said "if you exclude those with some kind of drawback" and that's definitely not unrelated! Sounds like you've noticed that NONE of the creatures on the list have what most players/designers would consider a drawback. No defender, no shadow, no additional costs to cast, etc. You could say that they're all either vanilla or "vanilla plus".
Hmm. This isn't directly about the topic of power creep. But I'd say that power creep is revealed to be occurring, as evidenced by the plethora of recent cards on this list. If the list was mostly older cards, then we'd probably assume power creep wasn't an issue. But as you notice, the list is about half Standard-legal! I was surprised by that, myself. Cards that haven't been printed in many years could still qualify for the list, such as Tephraderm or Phyrexian Walker. They're not Modern-legal so I didn't put them in the OP, but there's no reason to exclude them.

You're correct that the list wasn't generated by adding power and toughness together, and the 2 cards you mentioned are good examples. Does it help if I mention that Viscera Dragger and Orc Sureshot also qualify?
Hm so if I understand this correctly, it seems you can express the answer as a formula the "input" would be a certain casting cost and power value and the "output" would be the creature with the highest toughness that fulfills them, ignoring modern-illegal cards and cards with drawbacks.
What's still unclear to me is how ties are evaluated, clearly cards with upside get the nod over vanilla cards but what about the case where multiple cards with upside tie in toughness? For example, would Witchstalker be in the list or does Wolfir Avenger beat it out somehow?

In the case of a tie, for example Witchstalker and Wolfir Avenger, I picked which one seemed best to me, but that's just because I only wanted to make a list of the BEST creatures at each casting cost. (I considered the Warrior creature type and abilities of the Wolfir to give it an edge.)
But one could make such a list and allow multiple iterations of the same casting cost, power, and toughness. Great Sable Stag would join Witchstalker and Wolfir Avenger. Dunno if you'd want to include Gnarled Mass and Trained Armodon, though, I don't think they have anything to offer.
Sounds like you guys essentially figured it out, although nobody phrased it quite the way I was thinking.
EDIT: Tilwin just asked about Baneslayer Angel and is correct that it should knock Angelic Overseer off the list. When I made up my list, I originally included mythics but realized there are several mythic creatures that for some reason are allowed to totally break the mold. Sublime Archangel, Sun Titan, Torrent Elemental, Grave Titan, Thundermaw Hellkite, and Inferno Titan are some others. It seems to me there's some special rule on costing mythic creatures that I'm not aware of, so I excluded mythic creatures from the list when I drew up the current version.
EDIT2: I'm going to attach a visual representation of my current master creature list. This should clear a few things up..... and raise a few more questions. And if you give it some thought, you'll probably notice (as I have) a lot of opportunities for data analysis, and card design. It's a lot like a Sudoku actually, figuring out the patterns and filling in the blanks. I'm going to do a full writeup about it in the main CCC forum in the next day or so. If anyone's interested, I'd love some help improving it - finding anything I've missed, and expanding it to include other mana costs. It could be a rather large project, but useful and interesting I think.
Very interesting project, I'll be sure to check it out! In my opinion, the biggest improvement would be including multicolored mana costs, both gold and hybrid ones. I'll be glad to try to help with that.
By the way, was the phrasing you were looking for the following?

But again you should define exactly what "efficiency" is and how to measure it to avoid ambiguities (my scientific background is showing, I know). At the moment, I can't come up with any good way that achieves that.

Yes, it looks like your wording essentially covers it, but like you said, then you'll want to define "efficiency". The way I had envisioned it being worded was:
"Each card on the list is the creature that has the highest toughness of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost and power."
For example, Glass Golem is the creature with the most toughness (2) of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost ( ) and power (6). Battle Brawler is the creature with the most toughness (2) of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost ( ) and power (2). (Others may choose Pain Seer, Tavern Swindler, or even Walking Corpse as the better example, or may want to list them all as tied.) Lagonna-Band Trailblazer is the creature with the most toughness (4) of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost ( ) and power (0).
It seems 'power' and 'toughness' can be reversed in the solution and it still makes sense...

In a manner of speaking, this is a list of the best creatures in Magic. Most of them are completely unplayable outside limited, but most of them are still about as good as they can probably get. Very few designers are calling for a vanilla 3/2 for :1mana::symr: (you'd get laughed out of the forum), but after analyzing these data I think green OR white could have it, and red should definitely get a 3/1 (maybe with a small upside) for that cost.
When the list is both complete and correct, the creatures on it will reveal the relationship in Magic between cost and size. It doesn't tell us anything new, because it's just a collection of data arranged a certain way, but I've learned quite a bit already, and I think it'll make me a better designer. While it's true we aren't constrained by all the same rules and guidelines that official (paid) designers are, it's still useful to analyze what they've already come up with, to glean what they consider to be the boundaries of design, and then make better decisions about our own (unofficial) design work.
I'm working up a huge post for the main CCC forum right now, but in the meantime, I'll post my full current list of creatures. I've only done mana costs up to 6cmc, and only found it useful (in most cases) to look at costs with 1 or 2 coloured mana symbols (so for example, I haven't looked at 1RRR yet, and so on). The patterns that come out of this are very cool.
I keep finding improvements to the list, though, so I'm sure there are more to be found! I've used Gatherer and my brain for most of it, but Gatherer's search has limitations. For example, if there was a creature out there like this...

... then I'd consider that a 3/4+ for 2G, and it would knock Centaur Courser off the list. Gatherer wouldn't have helped me find Spikedog though. Another area where I probably am missing data is hybrid mana costs. For example, given Dryad Militant, I consider 2/1+ to be valid. Some may say that being white is a drawback, opening you up to Execute. I guess that comes down to a judgment call. But please, do suggest any and all improvements! And contribute some of your own similar data analysis.

Probably lost in the copy and paste, but actually those two are the same. The second should be: "has the highest power (...) for its casting cost and toughness".

And this is why this is very interesting, so thanks to you for doing this! Now that we have the key, I'll try to do some work of my own and see if I can come up with something useful to add (like starting to do the same for multicolored costs).
EDIT (updated 2/21): for now, this is what you obtain when you apply the same criteria to gold allied costs up to six mana and up to six power. In each cell, there is the maximum toughness for that cost (row) and power (column), excluding cards with any form of drawback. The sign "-" means there are no cards without drawback satisfying the criteria. If the cell is green, there will also be +N after the card name, that means there are N additional cards satifying the criteria tied with the greatest toughness with the named card in addition to it, and all of them are listed in the text version (spoiler below the tables).
Second 2/21 update: Added hybrid costs in the text version (tables may be coming). Costs for which no creatures without drawbacks exist as of today are noted as "(none existing)". A couple cards are in parenthesis because they aren't included in the list because of some reason but I still wanted to note their existence. Warning: the list is becoming very long very quickly.
EDIT 2/24: added colorless costs in text version. The resctrictions are the same (power, toughness and cmc all less than or equal to 6 and must be legal in Modern). Where my list differs from rancored_elf's one there is a star (*). Sometimes it happens because the card he listed is not legal in Modern (Ornithopter vs Phyrexian Walker for example), other times because I added a power value that he didn't originally consider (most cases), other times because he somehow missed a creature with higher toughness (Painter's Servant vs Hovermyr for example). Colored costs in WUBRG order will follow in the next days.
EDIT 2/27: added white (power and cmc max 6, max triple colored costs).
EDIT 3/2: added blue (cmc max 6, max triple colored costs).

1) That's definitely true about the first bunch, although it wasn't what I was thinking.
2) Your response shows me I need to clarify something! All the cards in the OP are part of the same question (or puzzle). They're not 6 separate games, sorry about that. I separated them by colour, but I should have said that they're in no particular order. I'll clarify the OP, thanks.
Hint 1: Here are a few more creatures that meet the same requirements and might help give it away. Kuldotha Forgemaster, Mardu Woe-Reaper, Latch Seeker, Viscera Dragger, Felhide Spiritbinder, and Alpine Grizzly.
1) Unless I've missed a card or two, none of them are legendary.
2) Each creature's name consists of some sort of noun describing what the creature is alongside some sort of adjective. The adjective either describes the creature itself or its affiliation with something or some group.
3) At least some of them encouraging going wide rather than tall.
And if I may, is Sluiceway Scorpion on your list?

Quite true, they aren't legendary. None of the cards on the list are multicolored, you're right, but the list could be expanded to include multicolored cards. You asked about Sluiceway Scorpion, and after a quick check, yes it could be added to the list. Now I'm curious if you made a lucky guess, or if you're close to figuring it out! As for the card names, interesting that you noticed that, but it's not about their names at all.

I had to look up the vanilla test, since I don't read/watch any card design on the "mothership" or other official sources nowadays. So sometimes I don't know the current lingo that MarkRo is using.

Those are interesting guesses. The closest is "the mana cost is .. efficient with the power and toughness". Somebody already uncovered that "it has something to do with the mana costs, the powers, and the toughnesses" but you're right that it is related to efficiency. You're pretty close to naming exactly what I'm thinking of!

The way this is phrased immediately made me think of "the mana cost is the most efficient with the power and toughness". That means if you search all cards with that given power and toughness, each of those cards is among the cards with the lowest converted mana cost you find. I checked doing exactly that in Gatherer with some of the mentioned cards: with Glass Golem, Disowned Ancestor and Alpine Grizzly that is true. But then there is Wolfir Avenger in hint 5 and Kalonian Tusker in the OP, which are both 3/3 but for different costs. The Tusker is indeed among the 3/3 creatures that cost less if you exclude those with some kind of drawback. That, by the way, would be true also for Fleecemane Lion, which should be in the list if my interpretation was true, while the Wolfir shouldn't be there. Clearly this is not it, but I feel I may not be that far...

Very very good, bravelion! You're really narrowing it down. Your cousin Fleecemane Lion WOULD be on the list, that's correct.
Regarding Tusker and the Wolfir both being 3/3, you've noticed that the list has duplicate instances of power and toughness (like 3/3), and it also has duplicate instances of casting costs, but no duplicates of casting cost, power, AND toughness. So Watchwolf would NOT be on this list. The reason? Essentially, it is tied with Fleecemane Lion for all purposes of this exercise. The reason Lion would get the nod over Wolf is because the Lion has an added bonus. If Lion didn't exist, Watchwolf would still be on the list.
You said "if you exclude those with some kind of drawback" and that's definitely not unrelated! Sounds like you've noticed that NONE of the creatures on the list have what most players/designers would consider a drawback. No defender, no shadow, no additional costs to cast, etc. You could say that they're all either vanilla or "vanilla plus".
Hmm. This isn't directly about the topic of power creep. But I'd say that power creep is revealed to be occurring, as evidenced by the plethora of recent cards on this list. If the list was mostly older cards, then we'd probably assume power creep wasn't an issue. But as you notice, the list is about half Standard-legal! I was surprised by that, myself. Cards that haven't been printed in many years could still qualify for the list, such as Tephraderm or Phyrexian Walker. They're not Modern-legal so I didn't put them in the OP, but there's no reason to exclude them.
This is also pretty close. Yes, the exact casting cost matters for this. 2RR isn't 3R, etc.

And I'm going to phrase the answer, since you've uncovered parts, and just need help getting it worded the way I'm looking for.

What's still unclear to me is how ties are evaluated, clearly cards with upside get the nod over vanilla cards but what about the case where multiple cards with upside tie in toughness? For example, would Witchstalker be in the list or does Wolfir Avenger beat it out somehow?

In the case of a tie, for example Witchstalker and Wolfir Avenger, I picked which one seemed best to me, but that's just because I only wanted to make a list of the BEST creatures at each casting cost. (I considered the Warrior creature type and abilities of the Wolfir to give it an edge.)
But one could make such a list and allow multiple iterations of the same casting cost, power, and toughness. Great Sable Stag would join Witchstalker and Wolfir Avenger. Dunno if you'd want to include Gnarled Mass and Trained Armodon, though, I don't think they have anything to offer.
Sounds like you guys essentially figured it out, although nobody phrased it quite the way I was thinking.
EDIT: Tilwin just asked about Baneslayer Angel and is correct that it should knock Angelic Overseer off the list. When I made up my list, I originally included mythics but realized there are several mythic creatures that for some reason are allowed to totally break the mold. Sublime Archangel, Sun Titan, Torrent Elemental, Grave Titan, Thundermaw Hellkite, and Inferno Titan are some others. It seems to me there's some special rule on costing mythic creatures that I'm not aware of, so I excluded mythic creatures from the list when I drew up the current version.
EDIT2: I'm going to attach a visual representation of my current master creature list. This should clear a few things up..... and raise a few more questions. And if you give it some thought, you'll probably notice (as I have) a lot of opportunities for data analysis, and card design. It's a lot like a Sudoku actually, figuring out the patterns and filling in the blanks.

But again you should define exactly what "efficiency" is and how to measure it to avoid ambiguities (my scientific background is showing, I know). At the moment, I can't come up with any good way that achieves that.

Yes, it looks like your wording essentially covers it, but like you said, then you'll want to define "efficiency". The way I had envisioned it being worded was:
"Each card on the list is the creature that has the highest toughness of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost and power."
For example, Glass Golem is the creature with the most toughness (2) of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost (
Battle Brawler is the creature with the most toughness (2) of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost (
Lagonna-Band Trailblazer is the creature with the most toughness (4) of any creature without drawbacks for its casting cost (
It seems 'power' and 'toughness' can be reversed in the solution and it still makes sense...

In a manner of speaking, this is a list of the best creatures in Magic. Most of them are completely unplayable outside limited, but most of them are still about as good as they can probably get. Very few designers are calling for a vanilla 3/2 for :1mana::symr: (you'd get laughed out of the forum), but after analyzing these data I think green OR white could have it, and red should definitely get a 3/1 (maybe with a small upside) for that cost.
When the list is both complete and correct, the creatures on it will reveal the relationship in Magic between cost and size. It doesn't tell us anything new, because it's just a collection of data arranged a certain way, but I've learned quite a bit already, and I think it'll make me a better designer. While it's true we aren't constrained by all the same rules and guidelines that official (paid) designers are, it's still useful to analyze what they've already come up with, to glean what they consider to be the boundaries of design, and then make better decisions about our own (unofficial) design work.
I'm working up a huge post for the main CCC forum right now, but in the meantime, I'll post my full current list of creatures. I've only done mana costs up to 6cmc, and only found it useful (in most cases) to look at costs with 1 or 2 coloured mana symbols (so for example, I haven't looked at 1RRR yet, and so on). The patterns that come out of this are very cool.
I keep finding improvements to the list, though, so I'm sure there are more to be found! I've used Gatherer and my brain for most of it, but Gatherer's search has limitations. For example, if there was a creature out there like this...

Probably lost in the copy and paste, but actually those two are the same. The second should be: "has the highest power (...) for its casting cost and toughness".
And this is why this is very interesting, so thanks to you for doing this! Now that we have the key, I'll try to do some work of my own and see if I can come up with something useful to add (like starting to do the same for multicolored costs).
EDIT (updated 2/21): for now, this is what you obtain when you apply the same criteria to gold allied costs up to six mana and up to six power. In each cell, there is the maximum toughness for that cost (row) and power (column), excluding cards with any form of drawback. The sign "-" means there are no cards without drawback satisfying the criteria. If the cell is green, there will also be +N after the card name, that means there are N additional cards satifying the criteria tied with the greatest toughness with the named card in addition to it, and all of them are listed in the text version (spoiler below the tables).
Second 2/21 update: Added hybrid costs in the text version (tables may be coming). Costs for which no creatures without drawbacks exist as of today are noted as "(none existing)". A couple cards are in parenthesis because they aren't included in the list because of some reason but I still wanted to note their existence. Warning: the list is becoming very long very quickly.
EDIT 2/24: added colorless costs in text version. The resctrictions are the same (power, toughness and cmc all less than or equal to 6 and must be legal in Modern). Where my list differs from rancored_elf's one there is a star (*). Sometimes it happens because the card he listed is not legal in Modern (Ornithopter vs Phyrexian Walker for example), other times because I added a power value that he didn't originally consider (most cases), other times because he somehow missed a creature with higher toughness (Painter's Servant vs Hovermyr for example). Colored costs in WUBRG order will follow in the next days.
EDIT 2/27: added white (power and cmc max 6, max triple colored costs).

• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
Thanks for your patience as well, been dealing with something else that unfortunately came up, but I'm about ready to post my main thread on this topic. Hopefully tonight, but if not tomorrow afternoon.
I'll be very interested in your feedback and contribution, and it looks like the data you're gathering here will come in handy too.
You're welcome! I thank you for coming up with this. I'll do black, red, and green soon and then I'll give the whole list a final check to make sure everything's right, at least at the best of my possibility. I'm also very interested to see what we can learn out of this, and I'm also considering writing an article about this in the not immediate future, of course giving you the right credits, if you're ok with that.
