So my biggest issue that I have always had with most of the proposed spellmorph and auramorph variants is that when the non-creature morph is turned faceup you are losing board presence, often meaning that you have to do very strange things to the costing and gameplay.
So I want to make version of these mechanics that don't remove the 2/2 morph when flipped. Instead replacing it with a token in all ways, including what is targeting it, what its doing in combat, any auras or counters on it etc etc.
Below are two cards created with these mechanics and I want to know:
* What rules issues do these potentially have?
* What would a CR entry for one or both possibly look like?
Soul's Fury
Enchantment - Aura (C)
Auramorph (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for 3. Turn it face up at any time for its auramorph cost then replace it with a 2/2 token with this aura attached.)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and attacks each turn if able.
Bear's Fury
Instant (C)
Spellmorph (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for 3. Replace it at any time for it's spellmorph cost with a 2/2 creature token with this being cast targeting it.)
Target creature gets +4/+3 until end of turn.
I've got a vague memory of another custom magic card mechanic that did something similar. I think it was for trying to adapt pokemon into magic cards needing to replace one creature card with another but still represent the same permanent. ... or maybe it was a reverse ninjutsu mechanic that that was returning a blocking creature and replacing it with another...
Anyway, the obvious answer for spellmorph is just making it an evoke-like mechanic or normal morph with a double trigger...
Creature
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield or is turned face up, [effect].
Morph [cost]
Setting that aside for some possible bizarre wordings though:
Instant
Target creature [effect].
Spellmorph [cost] (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for {3}. Replace this card with a token representing the same creature any time and cast this card for its spellmorph cost targeting it.)
Instant
Target creature [effect].
Spellmorph [cost] (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for {3}. Pay the spellmorph cost anytime to replace this card with a token representing the same creature and cast this card targeting it.)
Instant
Target creature [effect].
Spellmorph [cost] (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for {3}. You may recast it from the battlefield for its spellmorph cost targeting itself. Use a token to continue representing the creature.)
Enchantment -- Aura
Enchanted creature [effect].
Auramorph [cost] (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for {3}. Pay the auramorph cost anytime to replace this card with a token representing the same creature, turn this card face up, and attach this to that token.)
Interesting suggestions. I guess I should clarify that i'm more interested in if the replacing breaks the magic rules in any ways that can't be cleared up in the CR entry?
I mean what would a CR section for replacing even look like?
701.X Replace
701.Xa A permanent is represented by either a card or a token. To replace a permanent, you move the card or token that is representing that permanent to another zone and use another another card or token to continue representing that same permanent.
701.Xb If you replace a permanent with a token, the token copies the base characteristics of the previous card or token representing that permanent. If you replace a permanent with a different permanent card, that permanent's base characteristics become the new card's base characteristics.
701.Xc Replacing a permanent does not cause it to change zones or control. Zone-change triggers don't trigger when a permanent is replaced.
701.Xd When a permanent is replaced, any Auras, Equipment, or Fortifications attached to that permanent continue to be attached to it. Likewise, any continuous effects on the permanent continue to affect it and any spells or abilities that currently target it still target it.
701.Xe A spell or ability may instruct a player to replace a nontoken permanent with a token, then cast the nontoken card. If the player would not be able to cast the card or if the permanent to be replaced is already a token, then the replacement is not made.
701.Xf A spell or ability may instruct a player to replace an Aura card that is currently representing a creature with a token, then attach the Aura card to that creature. In this case, the Aura card does not change zones. The token represents the same permanent that the Aura card used to represent and the Aura card becomes a new permanent. If the Aura card could not become attached to the creature, then the replacement is not made.
702.36x Spellmorph is a variant of the morph ability that appears on instant and sorcery cards. "Spellmorph [cost]" means "You may cast this card as a 2/2 face-down creature with no text, no name, no subtypes, and no mana cost by paying {3} rather than paying its mana cost."
702.36xi Turning a face-down permanent with spellmorph face up follows extra steps. To do this, replace the permanent with a 2/2 token creature representing the same permanent, then turn the instant or sorcery card with spellmorph face up and move it to the stack. You cast the card by paying its spellmorph cost rather than paying its mana cost. If the spell is targeted, you must choose the replacing creature token as a target.
702.36xii If you can't choose the replacing creature token as a target or can't cast the spell for any other reason, then you can't turn the card face up and the replacement is not made.
702.36xiii If a face-down permanent that's represented by an instant or sorcery card with spellmorph would be turned face up by an effect other than its spellmorph ability, its controller reveals it and leaves it face down.
702.36y Auramorph is a variant of the morph ability that appears on Aura enchantment cards. "Auramorph [cost]" means "You may cast this card as a 2/2 face-down creature with no text, no name, no subtypes, and no mana cost by paying {3} rather than paying its mana cost."
702.36yi Turning a face-down permanent with spellmorph face up follows extra steps. To do this, show all players what the Aura card's auramorph cost would be if it were face up, pay that cost, replace the permanent with a 2/2 token creature representing the same permanent, then turn the Aura card face up and it becomes a new permanent attached to that creature.
702.36yii If the Aura that the card would become can't be attached to creature, then you can't turn the card face up and the replacement is not made.
702.36yiii If a face-down permanent that's represented by an Aura card with auramorph is turned face up by an effect other than its auramorph ability, the extra steps for turning an permanent with auramorph face up are not followed, so you end up with a face up Aura that is not attached to anything and it is put into the graveyard the next time state-based actions are checked.
