Hello! I want to create a creature that allows you to choose its ability. I assume this would be easy with most keywords, but flash poses a problem. Would this be possible?
Diving Bird 2U
Creature — Bird
When you cast CARDNAGE, choose one —
flying
flash
CARDNAME has chosen ability.
2/2
You get the idea, but how do I word the card so that it actually works? Thanks for the feedback.
Because o the rules, stuff like this is very difficult to do elegantly. You just shouldn't try it. Look at the text for the Breaking Wave cycle, it was for a kicker set and they did the kicker mechanic but found they couldn't so they removed the keyword. Not particuarly cool in a kicker set.
"You may cast Diving Bird as though it had flash. If you do, it loses flying." -- something like this is the way forward but I'm not even sure if it works within the rules.
I'd drop flash for this sort of card if I were you.
It doesn't work with flash in particular, since by the time the ability triggers, the point where flash is relevant has already passed.
If you want flash to be one of the options, you could probably do:
Flash
~ enters the battlefield with a [whatever] counter on it unless you cast it any time a sorcery couldn't have been cast.
~ has [other ability] as long as it has a [whatever] counter on it.
If flash isn't one of the options, you could do:
As/When you cast ~, choose [keyword ability 1] or [keyword ability 2]. ~ enters the battlefield with the chosen ability.
If the abilities are longer, such as with most modal spells, or if the abilities involved have anchor words, you could do the following:
As/When you cast ~, choose one. ~ enters the battlefield with the chosen ability.
Some ability
Some other ability
Each of these has their own problems, mainly to do with logistical issues, but it gets the point across decently.

I've never seen a card use "before you cast," so I doubt the rules support it. Let me know what you think.
You may cast CARDNAME as though it had flash. If it is cast this way, it loses flying.
