I had just boughten 4 Gilded Drakes and put them in my deck... A few days later (I had brought it to school in between) I finally layed the deck out to change it and only found 3 Drakes... Grr! I called someone notorius for taking my cards as a joke (kinda) and he honestly said no. I was mad and for the next week I couldn't find it. Then I had a friend over and we played my deck vs my madness deck. Halfway through the game he draws a Gilded Drake.... eh-hehehehe... Apparently a traded Drake was shuffled in...
And how could I forget the time some idiot at school stole my $700 deck out of my backpack. I eventually found out it was him at the end of the day. He said he didn't steal it, but was borrowing it to play at the library. People are retarded. This kid wouldn't even know how to play the deck and should have asked me first... Imagine going through each class with only one thought on your mind: WHERE THE HECK IS MY DECK? waaaaa.... and still having to fulfill your duties and pay attention in class... sigh

Celebrating 3 years of open-minded acceptance, indispensable help, great advice, and incalculably-creative deck-design... Thanks for all the magic!
While netdecking and testing VileHorror i thought about Biorhythm. Sure its really expensive, off-color and crappy but still you're always the one with creatures while playing VH. That made me think.
I had my decks sitting in my backpack, the bags unzipped, sitting in the corner. I went to the bathroom, and when I came out I flipped. My Reanimator deck was gone, the one I was going to play..and it was FNM nonetheless. 2 Foil Koko's, 2 regular and 4 foil Yosei. Some blazing Archon and 20 foil swamps. I was angry...and even worse it was someone I know and trust because only my playgroup was their that night. Sad...I never did find it but I have a hunch on who did it.
Also, someone has been stealing from the store, once again someone from my playgroup. Every Sunday and Friday the owner keeps the store open late just for the magic players, so no customers come in. We were all sitting and playing magic, and then the owner comes in saying that mechandise that was their earlier is now missing. It's come to the point now where the owner is thinking about just getting rid of most of the Magic in the store since it's causing so much problems.
And like I said, what makes me most angry is it's someone within my play group of around 15 people. I used to trust all of them with my cards and most of them are my friends from school, but now? I just don't know....

However, I enjoyed a hilarious experience last year at a JSS. Read and enjoy.
I was playing MUC, with light-blue sleeves. To foil thieves, I bought the same sleeves and the same deck case and made a dummy deck with extra white-boardered lands, and bad commons and stuff. I put the dummy deck on the table in plain sight and go to the restroom with my real deck with me. I peek out and see someone attempting to steal the dummy deck. They pocket it, and I catch him red-handed with a judge also getting him as well. The judge almost was very authoritarian and was probably going to turn him over to the cops for stealing, but the head judge decided to ban him for 6 years from the DCI.
The thief then takes a look at the dummy deck and explodes in a bunch of mixed swearwords and insults as he is being escorted out of the building.
Ownage!!!!
You are the awesome.
Anyway I've never gottten any of my stuff stolen, but if I caught someone in the act, I would do very bad things to them.
I've been lucky and not experienced a theft of my stuff, thankfully.
On the other hand I do have a close friend, my best friends brother, who experienced some really shady and almost, serious issues because of conflict.
When we first started playing, I was about 12, he came up from Southern California ( L.A. County Area ) to live with his Brother who was my best friend. He was about 19 then with a chip on his shoulder. He really didn't take to the game at first, but then he got pretty far into it with some pretty nice cards.
Eventually the night came where one of his 2 binders was stolen, and he knew who did it - but unfortunately could never find him, the guy literally never showed up to a local event again.
Now, my friends brother who had his cards stolen isn't your typical guy - he doesn't forgive and forget and he always, and I mean always wanted revenge. It didn't help that he always had a strap in the center counsel of his car that he seemed to be trigger happy about when talking.
So months later, he had full power and we were at a different card shop, but still local. And after a game in the finals he's cleaning up his stuff and checking to make sure his power is all intact and what's missing - Unlimited Black Lotus...
The world basically stopped rotating, in my life that is, right then.
He immediately said 'who the **** has left in the last few minutes?' - it happened to be the guy he just beat. Since it had only been a minute or two since he left he immediately stormed out to his car and started to drive down the main road.
He saw the guy a ways up and smashed on the brakes, took out his strap and put in under his belt and ran after him. He started yellin 'gimme my **** mother****er, I know you've got my black lotus.' The guy denied it a few times before my buddies hand was ready to pull out his strap and really scare this kid to get it back.
No **** - the Lotus drops from his long sleave shirt arm onto the ground before he ever gets to that point.
I'm not sure why he didn't beat the kids ass - I mean, he deserved it, no questions asked.
But that was the most hardcore theft story I was ever involved in.

"Should have beat his ass is being nice." That kid deserved to get the fear of god BEAT into him. I would have loved to see the kid's reaction to having the lotus drop from his sleeve... I bet he crapped himself.
And, I plan on talking to the store owner, but his conviction is great. If he feels I am attacking his beliefs, he will probably not be happy with me.

I think that WoTC felt that a lot of the players thought Standard was becoming mundane and a joke from all the nuked cards floating around. R&D took a vacation, and MaRo just started reprinting things.
I've only ever had a few minor theft incidents happen to me, and one of them I think was an accident. We had a trade going, and I think that the stuff that was his accidentally got mixed up with some cards I had just traded for from someone else, and had been lying nearby (I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt because he didn't look like the type of person who would steal, but I could be wrong, because I haven't seen him since I lost the cards). I've never had a binder or deck stolen, thankfully, just the occaisonal card that comes up missing, and chances are that even those cards were just ones that I traded away and forgot about. However, I rarely bring my collection of foils anywhere unless there is a purpose. My foil binder is the best part of my collection; it has most of the chase rares from Rav block and 9th in foil, and I don't want to risk it it getting stolen.
There was one instance at my old store where someone broke into a guy's car and stole his entire collection, which was probably close to four thousand dollars in value. I'm guessing on the value, and I may have overestimated it a bit, but I know he had a pretty impressive collection. That issue never got resolved, and the thief better hope that this guy never finds him. The kid that got his collection stolen is about six foot five inches and must weigh close to five hundred pounds (mainly fat, but at his size it doesn't even matter).

I was at a cardstore once and this dude like 18-ish starts screaming throughout the store cuz I guess someone stole his binder which included a set of the power 9. He looked really pissed and was going up to everyone, when suddenly these three kids probably around his age went running through the door. He chased their ass's down and beat the **** out of all three of them. Everyone went outside to watch cuz it was right in the middle of the street. The store owner "tried" to break it up but just gave up after a while. I thought it was great, and no ones ever tried to steal from there again.

The thing is, I was sitting right next to the bag at the time. I have no idea when it could have been taken. Also. the shop owner didn't give a damn...slops to him.
Moral of this story is, carry your stuff on your person.

Don't take more than you can carry at once with you to tourneys. This is really common sense stuff...:-/
@Majik, I'd love to live in a happy little fairy world where no one steals or takes advantage of people. But we don't. I'm just trying to tell people that all it really takes is a little commons sense to not fall victim to theft. I've never had cards stolen, and I probably won't because I pay attention to what people around me are doing. I wish more people would, particularly the people who have had things stolen more than once. To be honest, the people who have have things stolen multiple times just blow my mind. Like how many times does the bee have to sting you before you stop playing with it?
Darn you got my name wrong. Lol.
I never bring a lot of cards at any time, but just a little slip of your eye, and your cards are gone. Furthermore 3 friends with me did'nt see anything and were supposed to take care of my cards. Amazing. However I caught the theif so its pretty okay. I don't trade a lot outside now, only meeting people 1 by 1 for meetups in my country. If my cards are stolen it be surely be that person. I could easily do an ip check on that person since I'm a mod in the other forum I'm in and report him to the police.
However I do agree that the best way to stop theft is to totally prevent the theif from even getting a chance to steal a card.
i've only ever had 1 card stolen off me, Dissension prerel avatar.
Last time i EVER left my deck unguarded, now i either watch it like a hawk or carry it on me, if i'm wearing a hoodie, so much the better, i usually carry only 1 deck on me and it stays on me at all times
Ive never had a magic card stolen. When YGO was big I had stuff stolen all the time, even 1 cent commons, cause the game was composed of 'little *****es' in the US. (Then again I put maybe $30 into the game and played for 3 months before quitting, as its a bad game).
Anyway, I dont bring my expensive stuff unless somebody expresses an interest in it, and it always goes back in my rucksack before and after, and that bag is attached to my shoulder. I dont trust anybody who isnt a good friend.
Edit: That guy deserved to get a good whacking for stealing a lotus.
I have had a few instances of theft throughout the years. The first was when I was in highschool I would go play at a used book store near my house on Fridays. I had a guy ask to look through my deck while I was trading with someone else and I didnt think much of it so I let him look. A bit later I was pile shuffling and I only has 55 cards, look though and I am missing 4 Mishra's Workshops and a Candelabra of Tawnos. I imediately told the owner who then locked the doors and the guy was still there. The owner found my cards and called the police. The only other time I have been stolen from was at the Guildpact Prerelease when I was trading with a guy for some random stuff. One of the things I traded away was a Loxodon Hierarch, I had 4 in my binder, which I let him pull from the binder. We agreed on the trade, swapped cards and went out seperate ways. Later on I got another Hierarch out of a booster pack and when I went to put it in my binder with the other three, there was only one there. He had pulled three out instead of one and stolen the other two. Now I never let other people pull from my binder in trades. It sucks that this stuff happens to make us learn...
I had a few things stolen back when I was a noob. But then again, I was a noob and nothing I had was really worth anything.
One thing I do is I write down my entire binder onto some pieces of paper. (for example)
My Haves:
4 Black Lotus
etc.
etc.
Note: I do not really have 4 black lotusi.
Anyways, I would show the people I'm trading the piece of paper and if they want things, I would look at their stuff. If I see anything I want, I would THEN take out my binder and take out the cards I want to trade. Its easier and also it helps keep track of your cards. Instead of just looking at the binder all the time...

I've never been stolen from that I was aware of... there have been some shady issues with the shop owner, which is partially why I don't play so much anymore...
what happened there was he had a thing set up where every month he gave a booster box to the top play... my little brother managed to win it. I found that funny cuz everyone at the place had 3 or 4 years on him at least... well anyway... he goes on to beat the second place person (because you have to beat them too..) and the owner gets what kind of box we want... sure it has to be amongst the cheapest boxes, but thats fine... we were planning a draft...
Well, we go up there about once a week from then on, and for two months the box never comes... after that we misse a couple of weeks... 14 days... and he tells us he held the box for over a month and we never showed up, so he sold it.... He did end up giving us half a box of ravnica, but regardless, you can't have a booster draft with half a box...
but also the first time I played at that location, I guess a bunch of pokemon blisters were stolen.. he came in and talked to all the magic players about it, but didnt sspect any of us... we all sat and wondred why anyone would take pokemon cards in this day and age
Well, I've had a case where I've *almost* been stolen from.
A few years ago at school, I was playing Magic in the library, and the bell rung for class. So I packed up my decks, and then started to pack up my trade binder. Then, I noticed that another kid was taking out some of my rares and looking at them, and some other rares had fallen out and were scattered around his feet. So, with some help from some other kid, I picked them up, got my cards back, and started packing up my binder.
Something still seemed a bit fishy though, so I checked my binder, and there were indeed a few rares missing! (Can't remember which ones). So I asked the people who were still in the library, and the kid who helped me pick up my cards said that the kid who was looking through my binder might have taken them. So, I immidiately went to class and told my teacher about it, and she asked if I had any suspects. I thought that it might have been that kid who was looking at my cards. So, I searched his locker, and questioned him, but he denied stealing anything, and his locker contained none of the stolen cards.
After that, I went back to class, and thought for a bit. I had to try and think of who else might have stolen my cards. Then, I remembered that other kid who had helped me pick up cards. I wondred if he could have stolen my cards. In order to do so, he would have had to spill some of my cards on the floor near another kid, point that out, then help me pick up some cards, and then point the blame at someone who seemed to be a reasonable suspect. Now, that sounded unlikely, but, it was the only explanation that I could think of. So, I told this to my teacher, and she agreed to question the kid.
About three minutes later, she returned with all of my stolen cards. When I asked how she had done that so quickly, she said that she told the kid that the cards were hers, and that she had lent then to me. After being told that, the kid immidiately admitted to stealing them, and apologized and returned the cards.
Other than that though, I've been lucky enough to not have my cards stolen.
I've never been stolen from in magic only because during a birthday party I had my yugi-oh deck stolen...that was worth a couple hundred dollars. So whenever I go to a tornament no matter how much I bring (2 bags usually...) I carry them with me no matter what...
I'm at another JSS running UR control. I made a dummy deck and sleeved it and boxed it so you could have sworn it was the real deal until you opened it and looked at the cards.
I've won round 1, and I put out the dummy deck on my table. The dummy deck sticks out like a sore thumb (but the cards can't be seen), and I go into the adjacent room. My GF came along to the tourney. She starts to doze off and begins to fall asleep.
The thief approaches the dummy deck, checks to see if nobody is looking, and then attempts to take off with it, but seconds later, after some frantic footsteps, the thief crys out in pain and is on the ground. He was massaging his butt, and I started to piece the story together. My GF apprently woke up from her slumber, and repeatedly stomped the thief in his ass with her high-heels.

Thats good for you, but one thing I hate about stuff getting stolen at school was that if the kid doesnt find it, the kid would cry to his/her parents and then the parents would ***** to the principal. Which would result in no one ever playing magic at school because the principal decreed that it is too much trouble and bans it.
So it takes one person to ruin it for everyone else. And this actually happened. At my junior high school...

Making dummy decks seems like a lot of work, but catching a thief is worth it, especially if he's a habitual thief and not just an occasional opportunist.
I've told my one theft story in another similar thread a long time ago, but recently my playtest friends have been hit hard. One kid got his entire collection minus a few decks stolen close to the end of Extended season. It wiped out his type 2 and Legacy stocks. He was also sharing with another guy who swore he would kill the thief. Soon after that, the thief went to jail for this and the stolen cards confiscated, but it was months before the original owners would have gotten anything back, if at all. From his description of the contents, and secodary testimony from others, apparently the cards were worth thousands; like, playsets and playsets of Rav duals and jittes and Kokushos.
Later on this year, another playtester in our group borrowed several cards from us to build a rather expensive Legacy deck. Less than a week later, someone broke into his car and took everything that wasn't nailed down; ipod, binders, decks, and loose cards. We collectively lost a lot of cards that way. he works long hours and commutes a long distance, so lives in his car pretty much so it's rather unavoidable that they should still be there.
I've since lost a draft sideboard with a Simic Sky Swallower, a foil Chord of Calling, and a Pillar of the Paruns in it, but this is more probably a case where I was tired and simply left it in the store as i went home. Good luck to whoever found it.
As a rule, i only take a deck and sideboard with me to tournaments. Minding a trade binder or lending out cards to more than one person is a recipe for dissaster, even around people you think you know. Take your things with you, everywhere, even to the toilet. The world is full of jerks with a ready smile who believe they are entitled to whatever you possess.
I've never had anything stolen from me, mainly because I got really paranoid from threads like these. Whenever I go anywhere with my stuff, I keep it in a backpack under the table, with the straps between my legs.
It's really hard, like people said, to always keep an eye on all your stuff. Recently, at the CS pre-release, I had my draft SB stolen. I know, it was like 3 rares and jank commons and UCS (which I already had playsets of from sealed), but I mean it was sitting maybe a few inches from me, yet neither me nor my opponent saw anything. I looked a few piles for a bit, too see if I simply misplaced it, but alas, I didn't find it. I guess this doesn't ever compare to 90% of the things said here, but it was something.
Oh, and about the MTG and school issue, it is so true. From grade school through highschool, ever single trend gets banned due to theft or "rip off" trades, it is absurd. All is takes is one kid to trade his Mewtwo for a Machoke, and BOOM, gone for good (this is what happened in our case). Pogs, Crazy Bones, Gameboys, MTG, Digimon, Pokemon, I played it all and had it all taken away. I'm back to plain old MTG now, but it really sucked when I was high school/grade school.
Also, as far as punishment goes, I think the people who get yelled at or hit get off EASY, same thing with 1/2 year store bans. This is theft, in some cases, hundreds of dollars. A BAN from the store and DCI is more fitting, in addition to calling the police. What some people don't seem to get is that magic cards may aswell be 20$ bills or more in many cases, and what exactly is transpiring is more severe then what people think. As far as the ban goes, do you want someone who has stolen other player's cards playing and participating in events later on? Do you want a known thief prowling around big events with plenty of opportunities to steal? I say: NO! If punishments go up, then the likelyhood of thefts will go down, it's that easy.
But as for me, when I play FNM or whatnot, I bring my deck, and it is either being played or is in my pocket. I'm not much of a collector, I build and buy and playtest my decks and go with those, so I have very few traders anyways. If my binder were to be stolen, I would value it at roughly... 100$ (that is my entire binder of rares and foils and whatnot).

This happened when I was also in grade school. Pokemon cards were all the rage and a guy had his Charizard stolen (it was like a $60-70 card back then) and the prinicipal banned all Pokemon cards... but he compromised by letting people bring them on Fridays and said that "Nobody is responsible for your own cards but yourself."

Since it is also theft of money, my store also turns anybody in who's caught stealing to the police and bans them from the store for life. This happened to one of my store's former employees, when he was trying to steal a box and several packs of Dissension.
I had just boughten 4 Gilded Drakes and put them in my deck... A few days later (I had brought it to school in between) I finally layed the deck out to change it and only found 3 Drakes... Grr! And like I said, what makes me most angry is it's someone within my play group of around 15 people. I used to trust all of them with my cards and most of them are my friends from school, but now? I just don't know....

Thanks to Ace of Left Play for the great banners
Spread the word.

The thing is, I was sitting right next to the bag at the time. I have no idea when it could have been taken. Also. the shop owner didn't give a damn...slops to him.
Moral of this story is, carry your stuff on your person.

Last time i EVER left my deck unguarded, now i either watch it like a hawk or carry it on me, if i'm wearing a hoodie, so much the better, i usually carry only 1 deck on me and it stays on me at all times
Instead of just looking at the binder all the time...
what happened there was he had a thing set up where every month he gave a booster box to the top play... my little brother managed to win it.

I have an awesome GF.
Totally off subject but, LOL, Magic wasn't even invented when I was in Junior High School!
I'm getting so old...:frown:
