I don't like the players that rush through all the steps and get irritated when you tell them to slow down a bit in order to allow for responses. It makes you appreciate the players that do slow down and ask when it is applicable.
People who put their lands out in front and their creatures/permanents in the back. Its like they are trying to "sneak" some super secret tech into play or pass over some ability or interaction between the cards that I won't notice. I hate hate hate it. If i have to strain to see your stuff then **** you.
The card flicky people. You arent as pro as you think you are bro.
I flick my cards. It's my A.D.D. kicking up; if I'm not moving something, I go crazy and I can't play the game. Easiest thing to move is my hands, and play around with the cards sitting there. Also, since I'm very visual shuffling my hand around lets me see plays that I couldn't otherwise see.
I have zero intention of trying to annoy my opponent with the habit. In fact, if I didn't shuffle my hand around, my nervous habits would be far worse and far more distracting. I'd probably start drumming my fingers on the table or very audibly tapping my foot - not trying to annoy my opponent, but just because I *have* to do something.
Speaking as a deaf girl, I do wonder what being deaf has to with reading comprehension....
Anyway, I don't shuffle/flick constantly, but I do a little shuffle when I draw a card so its not obvious what card(s) I am playing. I don't want to give away if I am top decking.
I'm deaf too and I believe he's referring to us having better memory than some others thereby not needing to re-read a card 10+ times in a match. He's essentially correct as I just got my deaf buddy to try magic and he barely needed to read more than 4 times and still remembers them next match. It's a compliment, really.
If it's a causal game I'll ask you to stop. If you don't not much to be done about it. If we're at a tournament and I ask you to stop because of it being annoying and you refuse to, I'll call a judge over and ask him/her to ask you to stop. If it's a constant thing of flicking your cards audibly then it's distracting, if it's distracting me from playing I'm well within my rights to request for you to stop, and to request for a judge to make the same request.
The act of flicking cards, distracting or not, is not in violation of any IPG rules. Refusing to accommodate your request for silence is not belligerent behavior, and it is not the judge's job to ensure that everyone "play nice", but rather to ensure everyone "play fair". Unless real threats of violence/violent behavior/threatening behavior is being implemented, you really can't ask someone to stop just because you don't like it. It has to be pretty out-there for behavior to be unsporting conduct, and I've never met a judge who would issue a caution/warning for flicking cards in one's hand.
I've seen cautions/warnings for singing loudly, but that's really it. Card flicking is a very common habit
Oh, the worst, most annoying thing, is till when people freaking SIGH at you.
I think it's part of why I don't play competitive much, and why I prefer to not play, but rather sit next to the judge and watch the goings on.
Because if someone sighs at me for any reason besides a friendly manner during the game? It makes me want to hit them with something rather solid.
Like...
"Okay, I do <insert series of actions here> <Insert explanation of series of actions here> <wait a moment> <Insert explaining what happens when this set of actions resolves>"
"*sigh* mhm..."
"Okay, so, that's all I'm doing here. That deals 438 damage, so....I win this time. Damned good game though."
"*sigh* <walks away>"
I mean, seriously? Or when people are SO into competitive and net-decking, that they actually get upset with you for not running a netdeck. Now, I have no issue with netdecking and Spikes, some people like to win, but it's annoying when someone sucks the fun out of a game by just refusing to enjoy ANYTHING about the game besides their own victory.
I dunno, I just REALLY hate when people refuse to believe this game is actually fun, or that anyone else should have it >< I accept that some people like winning more than other aspects of the game, but why shouldn't it be ok for everyone else to have a little fun?
I dislike people having headphones in, because I find it a little rude to not be giving the game your full attention. To me, it signifies a bit of arrogance, like you don't feel this match with me is worth your full awareness(I know this may not be true, but it looks that way to me)
Those are just some things that really peeve me about a few bits of my local community Other than that, I'm blessed with a rather awesome local community of players.

I point out things and play a clean game myself. I hate people who try to win off of mind tricks and such when they can't also win clean. As was pointed out in a previous post - it's the equivalent of schoolyard taunting. If it's a "may" ability I'll probably point it out. Especially if it's an ability that you have zero reason you wouldn't use or put on the stack. Mainly because I don't want to win off of some stupid technicality. If I win I want it to be because you did everything as it was scripted or you conceivably could do and my play was simply better than yours. Winning and knowing it was a fundamentally clean game on both sides. Awesome.
I practice this mentality in everything I do or play. Boardgames. Poker. Magic. Collectible Card Games. Anything.
It's simply good sportsmanship and respect for the game.
The 'I Don't Know What the Second Main Phase or Priority Are': My turn doesn't end after combat, and neither does yours. This is why I'm annoyed when you go to untap lands after I'm done attacking or you wonder why I'm sitting there, staring at you and doing nothing, after you're done attacking. I'll give you a hand motion and verbal "Go ahead" when I'm done. Furthermore, I ask "Ok?" after every spell/ability I cast for a reason, and dislike opponents who don't do the same.
Aye, I had a bad habit when I got back in a few months back of this. Though sometimes if the game gets heated we end up staring for a couple minutes at our cards not realizing the turn was over :P.
Only thing that annoys me is people who are vagrant-magics(who don't frequent the LGS we go to) and look down when they are matched against my son. This really annoys me, but when he gets them a game down or wins I feel justice is served.
I do shuffle my hand after a draw not to be annoying but rather so the person im against doesn't know where my fresh card is, i really dont see how this is annoying. Also have RLS and unconsciously bounce my leg, don't ever really notice until someone points it out, again i dont see an issue if im not knocking the table about.
What gets me is people carrying on conversations with friends while playing, texting, and talking on the phone.

One thing that annoys me are annoying voices that don't seem to end...solve that one with an iPod.
Another thing is people who complain all the time about anything - deck not running perfectly, lacking relevant card/land/spell/whatever...again solved with an iPod.
Third - people who use the excuse they didn't know the rules or what a card did, or what THEIR OWN card did and thus did something and want to take it back. Come on, now. This is certainly a habit of lying when it happens every week.
Fourth - people who play way too slowly when they can't actually do anything. I almost called a judge on what literally seemed to be a non-English speaking "mail-order bride" because she was playing slow as dirt and literally couldn't do anything.
Fifth - they guy who calls a judge several times per round because he seems to have no idea what anything does. For example, he didn't know if the correct order was: Untap, Upkeep, Draw...yet he's playing a deck worth hundreds of dollars...that he spent.
Sixth - the people who think they are obligated to open our booster packs when we sit and crack boxes/cases. No, you're not. You can politely ask and we may let you sit and open a couple packs. Do you see what we use to open the boxes with? Grab some of the packs and walk away to open them and you'll surely find out.
#7 - annoying spectators. People who just can't stop talking and slow down a game/match with their garbage. See the first point.

Actually it falls under how they refuse. If they are hostile about it or become needlessly angry (like several in this thread have demonstrated) it does become belligerent behavior, which is in violation of the rules, which if a judge or other official requests you stop and you don't is a further violation by the letter of the rules.
As for people blaming ADD, I really can't see it as a valid excuse. I've been dealing with ADD for a good while and while it is an annoying facet it's still there. I use it to run over different plays, different possible plays, what I've got, what I might draw, what my opponent has, and what they may do. It's actually fairly useful to me in MTG just because I can bounce back and forth mentally across a large spectrum of possibilities.
I still don't see any reason why you need to spend my entire turn making pointless noise other than you attempting to annoy and or distract me from my turn, and like wise see no need for it on your turn unless you're trying to distract me from your plays.
And believe it or not studieshaveshown that listening to music can increase focus and help with information retention. Which is something you generally want in MTG and while yes some people are going to listen to it for the aforementioned reasons, others just like to drown out distractions in the background and focus on the task at hand. Like a good number of things in this thread it can go two ways.

Through me the way to the suffering city; Through me the everlasting pain; Through me the way that runs among the Lost. Justice urged on my exalted Creator: Divine Power made me, The Supreme Wisdom and the Primal Love. Nothing was made before me but eternal things And I endure eternally. Abandon all hope - You Who Enter Here.
Some older players seem to have the habit of arranging the cards in play so that the mana base is at the center of the table (closer to the opponent) while the creatures, enchantments, etc. are close to the player. It makes it really hard to see what the creatures are and their abilities. I can see that you have 6 mountains thanks, but I want/need to see the text on your creatures without having to pick them up all the time.
This is the one that's always gotten to me the most. Thankfully I've only ever played one or two people like that, but yeah it's fairly annoying this multiple creatures and other non-land permanents out. Another one I've seen that has gotten to me quite a bit is those people who put there creatures facing towards me. It's weird and unnecessary and how the hell can you yourself able to read the text at that point.
I hate when people try to "predict" what my deck is through the first 3 turns and then start making comments about the deck when they can't figure out what it is.
"Oh oh Black... must be UB control."
"Here comes your Squadron Hawk."
"Tapping out for Tezzeret I bet."
"Oh noes here comes a... wait... what?"
"Why are you playing THAT card..."
"Did I just get beat by a crappy jank card?"
"...no, you got beat by a good deckbuilder who knows how to read the meta."
I'm also not a fan of people who listen to loud headphones while they play... you might as well have stayed home and played online instead IMO.
I shuffle my hand constantly in mtg for the same reason i shuffle chips in poker, break them up and shuffle them again. it just feels good and if it throws you off in some way, thats just a bonus.
It is rather annoying when I play against people that speak in whisper constantly and I have to say "what?" over and over.
Other than that, just don't be a douche or rude or w/e and i don't really care. I've let people take mistakes back in tournaments but i've also refused when I knew that the mistake cost them the game.
I flick the cards in my hand like a maniac. If someone ever told me to stop, I'd kindly ask them to go **** themselves. If you can't get over the way I hold the cards in my hand, you've got some issues. I seriously doubt any judge would ever DQ or even give a warning to someone for flicking their hand.
And for those people who said you could call a judge for acting beligerant if your opponent is flicking cards because he's trying to "tilt" you are idiots. It's like calling a judge because your opponent is bluffing a mana leak. Are you serious?

Well, in regards to the people who put their mana in front of their creatures, this isn't them just being dickish, this is just, to my knowledge, how the field used to look. If it bothers you, I'm sure if you ask nicely, they'll put it the way you're used to.

Ok, I understand about the deaf thing now. Yeah, I do have to read the card since its easier and faster than me trying to lipread something (and maybe having that person forget to tell me a part of the card - or not have the exact grammar which is so important in Magic). I'm good at remember what things are once I read them though.

It's actually a courtesy to the other player. People typically know what their own cards do by heart and don't need to actually read the text. However, they aren't going to be exactly certain on the workings of their opponents spells. Putting cards on the table in that manner is allowing the other player to more easily read your cards.
Umm some really competitive players in my local,if I beat them, they refuse to shake my hand and just sightly walk away....
