It drives me nuts when people do stuff like dropping a land after drawing their seven without checking to see if I'm going to mull, or not announcing the end of their turn, or assuming it's their turn after my combat step is over. I know this is a thing that mainly newer players are prone to, so it shouldn't bother me so much, but... if I've ended every single one of my turns by saying "go" and making a hand gesture, and I've had to ask you half a dozen times if I can untap during the game, and if I've had to stop you twice from untapping your lands because I had a guy I was going to cast post-combat, could you take a hint, huh?
Actually it falls under how they refuse. If they are hostile about it or become needlessly angry (like several in this thread have demonstrated) it does become belligerent behavior, which is in violation of the rules, which if a judge or other official requests you stop and you don't is a further violation by the letter of the rules.
It doesn't fall under how they refuse, really. I don't know anyone who would act belligerent in saying "No" or "Nah dude, sorry" or something similar. Your goal seems to be to try and get someone to act hostile towards you and then try and twist the IPG to your favor. If you ask them to stop in a respectful manner, and they don't want to, I'm sure they'll say no in a respectful manner. If you ask them to stop in an obnoxious manner, I'm sure they'll respond in kind.
Again; I've never met a judge in my life who would issue an infraction for shuffling one's hand, and you've got to grow thicker skin or find a new hobby if you think the judge is there to make your opponent do what you find most comfortable. I'd love to make my opponents take a shower, or not have disgusting beards, or have less obnoxious voices, and so forth, but that's not how it works.
For someone who doesn't like people playing headgames, I know more people who get irate about rules lawyering than they do about card flicking.

For someone who doesn't like people playing headgames, I know more people who get irate about rules lawyering than they do about card flicking.
That's the thing, I have asked people nicely to not flick their cards, and been told to go screw myself for asking. And called over a judge and had warnings issued to them for it. And once again, I point out I'm not saying anything about shuffling the cards in hands, I'm specifically saying audibly flicking your cards. There is indeed a difference, as the flicking requires conscious effort on your part. If they say no and go on I'll mention that it is annoying and move on as well. If they want to get angry about me asking them to stop then they can enjoy telling a judge why they felt the need to respond with undue hostility.
Take a look a few posts back, someone responded to the very idea of being asked to not flick their cards with outright hostility. Multiple someones, though only one with enough anger to merit an infraction being issued. The fact remains if you are to the point that you feel it needed to insult another player because they asked you not to do something that is annoying you might need to find another hobby with less social interaction involved, because there will be people who ask you to stop, and there will be people who won't just sit there and listen to you curse at them. And since every time I've said it thus far seems to have been largely ignored, I am not saying that shuffling your hand is annoying. It isn't, it's just plain good strategy to do so. Flicking your cards back and forth isn't a required part of shuffling them however and shuffling can very easily be done without flicking.

I've never understood how people can get so bothered over the card flicking. Is your focus that bad?
We live in a world of constant noise, how can you not be able to deal with a background noise or just block it out?
I really don't get it.
We live in a world of constant noise. Except we tell everyone to be quiet on a golf course as professionals play ( and when amateurs play ). We tell everyone to be quiet when people are playing chess. We tell everyone to be quiet when an artist is painting. We tell everyone to be quiet for virtually every activity that requires concentration and is not a game fueled on adrenaline. So... yeah. The real question is why do you feel entitled to engage in a deliberate activity, flicking your cards, that would be frowned upon in a wide array of games and activities. If someone politely asks you to stop, just stop.

I agree with this and it is kind of surprising how many people say "I'll do it if I want to!" It really reinforces the antisocial stereotyping about Magic players. Maybe in the next tournament I go to, I will put my hand in my armpit and make farting noises and claim it is a nervous affectation.
People who attempt to riffle shuffle my deck when I give it to them to cut. Especially if it's a Legacy tournament.
People who plays with his foil Gideon Jura (or another $20+ card) without sleeves and riffle shuffling when drafting. It's annoying to see it so damaged just fresh out of the pack, especially if we're going to pick the rares later according to ranking.
People who shuffle at snail's pace and play some deck like Caw-Blade or Pod.
People who think they're pros and take this game too seriously. Honestly how many times are you going to call the judge for every single little suspicion that I'm trying to cheat? We have only 50 minutes per round you a**hole.
People who attempt to stall when they're 1-0 but never succeed to thus ending all rounds at 1-1.
Honestly how many times are you going to call the judge for every single little suspicion that I'm trying to cheat? We have only 50 minutes per round you a**hole.
Every time I've sent a player to a big tournament, my advice has always been not to be shy about calling a judge to resolve any issue; any issue at all. It can be a bit annoying if the judges are swamped, but I would rather wait for the judge and get a time extension than try to resolve an issue myself or potentially lose to a play made in error or outright shady behavior/cheating.
Players who abuse the judge "system" are clearly evident to the judges at a tournament. They'll get dinged if they appear to be looking to waste time. I know it can be frustrating, but if a player hasn't been warned by a judge for his conduct when it comes to asking for rulings yet, it's likely he doesn't warrant it. If you're worried about round times, ask for an extension when the judge comes around.
When you're playing a creature with an ETB ability and I'm playing blue, please please PLEASE wait for me to respond BEFORE you immediately mention the ETB trigger. And if I go "huh", it doesn't necessarily mean it resolves. Leave me time to think.
And don't call the judge. It's YOUR fault for jumping the gun on the ETB trigger and giving away more info than you had to by saying what you'd blow up before you even let me counter the spell.
anyone who asks for a concession can bite my shiny metal ass. hi, how are you, i paid money to play today so how about you shove your logic and your lawyering somewhere I won't have to smell it and we just play some f***ing Magic?
situation: UB opponent memoricides my splinter twin and my deceiver exarch. I have no way of winning this game, unless he decks first, which is unlikey since i've had 7 cards removed from my library. he's hitting me with a creeping tar pit as time comes to a close. i cast about 5 spells digging through my deck, eventually hit my last tectonic edge on my last card, play it, and shred his guy. we play about 4 more turns, he draws blanks, and time is called. we get to turn 4, his last turn, and he shows me a hand of seven removal spells.
"There's no way you're gonna win this game," he says.
"Yeah, neither are you," I reply.
Then he asks if I'm gonna concede. Hm, how about no? You wanna take three minutes to sideboard both games, and three minutes to shuffle all three games, then you can get the draw, prick.
When it comes to super-expensive cards, our LGS will actually provide sleeves for the match if you don't want to use a proxy if they have some laying around (They're gamers too, so they actually do sometimes), or give you a penny sleeve for the rare and everyone lets you proxy it. A girl pulled a foil Karn during NPH draft. You can be sure that was sleeved, rather quickly :xd:
I HATE when people ask for a concession >< I myself don't concede, I just don't do it. I think people, whether they know it or not, feel more fulfilled when they actually beat you, not get a concession.
My M:TG grump of the day: Got told that I shouldn't be playing with such crappy cards.
Why does it matter what kind of cards I want to play with? If you don't like it, then you don't have to play against me. If I'm so annoying with my fun-having, feel free to concede so you don't have to deal with it ;3

Can't you just ask them to sleeve their cards and if not at least use a proxy for the money card? It's how we do it at our LGS.
The problem comes when nobody says what each one's opened in their packs. If somebody doesn't use sleeves one would just assume he hasn't any money cards in the deck, it's common sense.
there was one time we had a "kid" (well, some 14 years old) play in our table. He din't use sleeves, and I asked him if he had anything worthwhile. He said no until in the first game I saw Kargan Dragonlord and a Gideon Jura It's okay if you don't want to reveal your bombs, but at least have in mind that those cards AREN'T YOURS.
2.) Getting mad at FNM. It's one thing to get mad in your own home with just your friends if something super unlucky/frustrating happens, but don't do it with people you've never met before. It's pathetic.
I know it gets frustrating when things don't go your way, but I can't understand when people get mad over how a game goes. I dunno, maybe it's just that I care about winning far too little, but I only feel accomplished if at least 80% of the people I play against have a good time playing, whether I win or lose. In my eyes, a loss isn't a failure, and nothing is angering. You just try and make the game as fun as possible for everyone, and if you fail, well, you can always try again next time.

At the M12 prerelease, one player KEPT ASKING "are you done?" every turn right after i attacked. He even started to draw his card for the turn a few times (i wasn't going to get him in trouble at the prereleae)
Finally i just lost it and said "Look dude, I'll let you know when my turn is over." He kept doing it, so finally, i just waited until he drew for the turn, and immediately said "are you done?" After 3 or 4 turns of doing this, he finally stopped.
I have a fea habits I could see as being annoying but I only play in a small group of friends so it isn't that big of a deal. I put my basic lands in piles of 5 and when I'm thinking about what I'm going to do during other peoples turns I often rub the cards in my hand over the bottom of my chin, I know that sounds kind of odd.
Players who think that casting two spells in quick succession before I can even blink, thereby circumventing the stack entirely, is an entirely legitimate play.

this, and the incredibly annoying hand-shuffling
in fact, it's not even shuffling, because the cards normally stay in exactly the same order - it's just rapid card flicking.
and by god it's annoying.
players never used to do this, i remember distinctly..... and then after seeing one or two specific Pro Players doing it, it seems to have spread through the community like wildfire. now it seems every other player has the nasty habit of flicking their cards about at breakneck speed all the time.
to those people: chill out. seriously..... the best players are chilled and calmly consider their options - they don't shuffle nervously all the time.

The most annoying thing I can think of is when someone takes 5 minutes to play a land, and pass the turn. Yes, I can understand if you think an opponent might have a counterspell, but taking 5 minutes, and then just playing a land and passing the turn?! That irritates me, especially at FNM.
Another thing is when someone casts Duress T1 instead of the IoK right next to it. I wish I could interrupt to let them know that IoK is only good the first 3-4 turns, where as Duress is more of a late game solution to a combo.

The snapping of cards. I hate when people purposely bend their cards just to snap it onto the table. Whats worse, they will pick up land as they cast a spell just to snap everyone of them.
