THREAD TOPIC ADDITION (because I can't change the title):
Ideas for casual gift based MTG formats. Have you done any in the past?
I was thinking of picking up a Stocking Tiger for a gift and it got me thinking about how it would work in play. The person I would get it for plays mostly casual multi-player EDH among friends, and those kinds of games see plenty of "gain control of target..." cards, so it is no stretch to imagine it being played and taken away before it could attack. I would assume that, in a group where everyone is friends, that the pack would go with whoever controlled it at the time, but man does that make temporary theft cards like Act of Treason sweet because it yoinks the pack pretty quickly.
What if this card is bounced back to hand after the first pack is opened? I would assume that would mean that when you play it again you would need to put another pack under it, but that might get a bit dear for the person casting it.
Since this card is not legal in any Sanctioned format there are no oracle rulings for it, and I don't feel like sifting through MaRo's blog for an answer.
This is all among friends, and I imagine they would talk about it first and decide what they want to do, but how would 'yall work this?
Yes, if stocking tiger leaves the battlefield for any reason and to anywhere (blink, hand, GY, library), then enters again, it will come into play with a booster pack under it (think how clones work.)
And on any card, you refers to the cards controller, so if you MC or threaten the stocking tiger, then hit a player with it, whoever controlled it when it dealt the damage gets the booster pack.
The thing with u I would assume that would mean that when you play it again you would need to put another pack under it, but that might get a bit dear for the person casting it
Pretty much, yeah.
However, my opinion is that stocking tiger is meant to be taken by an opponent via act of treason. After all, it's stockings are supposed to contain gifts, and what's the point of a gift if you're buying it for yourself?
So, to answer your question, yes, it will be expensive for the caster, but he wouldn't be playing that card in the first place if he didn't mean to give an opponent cards.

Wow...that is a VERY good point, and I am frankly ashamed that I couldn't see that.
Now my brain has thoughts:
If I could get a 3-4 of these cheap enough it would be really fun to have a game where I would surprise people and tweak an EDH game giving everyone a Stocking Tiger so now all decks were 100 cards + General. I suppose I could proxy, but half the fun would be giving people this silly card. It would be cheap enough to grab some assortment of boosters and have people pick them randomly from a sack when they cast their ST. Perhaps make a limit of 2-3 boosters per person, and then after that ST becomes a vanilla 3/3.
The other thought I had was to have Stocking Tiger only grant one card per combat phase, and at the end of the turn that it deals combat damage the ST must change controllers in some manner (maybe random, or to the person who was dealt damage). This would make sure that there was some spread of the love. If you did this it would almost be better to make packs from the cards of multiple sets like people do when drafting a cube. If the format was EDH you would need to construct the packs so that they were random, but still contained cards from all colors so that you would not (at least at first) have a stack of cards that contained nothing you could play in your colors.
Dr. Worm, I love the idea of getting an entire EDH group Stocking Tigers, that's hilarious. Consider how Booster Tutor would interact with this sort of nonsense.
it's kind of like when we played casual with the Unglued cards. before the game, everyone agrees to allow the cards, and adds some fun and not too serious gameplay.
your friends would love it if you could get a few of these!
Lets be honest...at $30+ a pop I am not getting four as gifts for my friends. The boosters would be easy enough, but not the cards. I wish I could, but I can't. It just sounded like a blast and sometimes I type my posts as a bit of a stream of thought.
