I sometimes think about Extended, the format that Modern took out back and shot like a dog, and wondered what decks would probably be around today. Now I am talking more about the 7 year Extended, and not the 4 year version it became later in life, although that would be interesting to talk about still. I never got to play the format so I think it would be pretty interesting to look at what could be right now.
If I'm correct, and I sure hope I am else this looks incredibly stupid. 7 year Extended looks like this BFZ, Tarkir, Theros, RTR, Innistrad, SoM, and Zendikar, while also including Origins, M15, 14, 13, 12, and 11 with core set. 4 year would end at RTR and.
So what are your thoughts on this? What would you build, is there a top tier deck you could think of right now? Let's say that the previous banlist and all cards that would be part of the format right now still stand, so Stoneforge Mystic, Mental Misstep, and Jace 2.0 would be banned. Is Cawblade running rampant with different cards? Does Valakut still blow its top over the competition? Does Mono Black Devotion get crazier with Geralf's Messanger? Does flip Jace no longer have it's crazy presence right now?
What do you think Extended would look like right now?
Burn looks like it's Tier 1: the current list loses nothing other than Rift Bolt and Lava Spike. Infect with Mutagenic Growth/Become Immense in place of MOOK sounds nasty. Abzan/Jund lose Goyf, Bob, and Maelstrom Pulse. Abzan still has Souls and Rhino, though, so it's probably still good. Twin loses Pestermite, Cryptic Command, and Remand, but it's probably still decent, running other 2-mana counterspells in its place. Eldrazi loses absolutely nothing.
Modern decks that are dead:
Tron (loses the Urzatron lands)
Affinity (loses Ravager, Glimmervoid, Cranial Plating)
Living End (loses Living End)
Merfolk (loses Lord of Atlantis, Silvergill Adept, Aether Vial, Cursecatcher, Kira, Kamigawa lands)

These days, some wizards are finding they have a little too much deck left at the end of their $$$.

As time goes by, and with the changes to standard, either version of Extended becomes increasingly viable, though I would argue the older 7 year version would be preferable to the 4 year, which suffered from being a slightly longer standard. They couldn't do 7 year when modern launched as it would have basically been modern sans mirrodin block and I believe Kamigawa block and 8th ed. Now it would also lose Rav block, Coldsnap, Lorwyn Shadowmoore, and Timespiral, and 9th and 10th. They would be very different formats.
Of course, there are two problems that could preclude Extended from returning. First, having old extended return would mean two rotating formats that rotate differently, with not logical way to match them until Dragons and Origins become the oldest sets in the format (since otherwise you'd be splitting up blocks). Secondly, there are only so many formats that the tournament scene can support. I fear that Legacy would become as rare as Vintage in order to fit a new Extended into the rotation. People would also complain if they had to build decks for three formats to compete in major tournaments regularly.

The Meaning of Life: "M-hmm. Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations"
Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
I think we'd see Pod. Sure, no Melira Pod, but Pod still has Voice, Restoration Angel, Kiki, Linvala, Souls, Rhino, and other spicy pieces like Goatafenza.
Oh. We'd see BW tokens. Intangible Virtue, Souls, both Sorins, Elspeth, and all the hand-hate you could want.

Generation 15: The first time you see this, add it to your sig, but add 1 to the number. Call it a social experiment.
I agree that it sounds fun. It would be something I might play. I think any form of reanimator would be crazy, with all the big, bad stuff creeping about (Obliterators, Newlamogs, Worldspine Wurm).

Wow, didn't think this thread would pop up again. I would probably build some sort of control/Superfriend type deck. I did enjoy my W/U/R Superfriends deck during RTR/Theros and would try and recreate that all day.
Zen block would be rotating soon, so goodbye enemy fetches, eye, and temple. I wonder if goblins would have been a thing since at one point it had Grenade, Guide, Siege Gang, Chieftain, Krenko, Instigator, and the Lorwynn cards (splash B for Wort?). Combining Hardened Scales with undying could be interesting, maybe that would go places.
You know what? Let's just scrap modern right now and revive seven year extended.

I think the demand for bolts, goyfs, and moons would be lower.
I think the value of standard cards would be stabler, since they would see play longer and have less competition from cards printed 12 years ago.
I think it would be easier to get into for new players than modern and less violative then standard.
Lastly, I think WotC would be well served by a 4-6 year extended in light of the faster rotation of standard, but it's not going to happen.
