I noticed that in a lot of EDH Decks with Gonti, Lord of Luxury as the commander, they also run Praetor's grasp.
Why? Most of the decks I've seen can only generate black mana. They might have Nykthos, Shrine of Nyx in it.
If you take a card using Praetor's grasp, you can't really cast it with just black mana (Unless it's grey or black).. Is it because Praetor's grasp let's you look through their entire deck? And, I mean, you could take key cards and effectively never use them. Is that the idea??
Thanks, still learning this game. And, I'm working on a Gonti deck.
That being said, the only reason I could see to run Praetor's Grasp in a deck like that would be as a "just in case" card to deal with a card that absolutely hoses your deck similarly to how Sadistic Sacrament and Jester's Cap can do the same. TBH though I think in any scenario you're better off running Cap as it can also take out an entire potential combo from someone's deck and getting a 1 for 1 with Grasp in EDH is significantly less effective than other formats since it's multiplayer. Not to mention that 1 for 1 doesn't even impact the board. I suppose it's not terrible if you just plan to use it on whomever's playing black, but there's almost always a more efficient card to be putting in your deck in that case because you can just play something that has actual synergy with your plan.
Almost every EDH deck runs a few similar cards, like Sol Ring. There are also plenty of black decks being played in the format, so it's not uncommon for a Praetor's Grasp to be able to find something a mono-black deck both wants and can cast.
It can also be used as an Extract to get rid of a card you don't want to see, and while not common, you do occasionally see someone drop Mycosynth Lattice, letting the mono-black player cast any spell off Grasp.
