I'm new to the forums so forgive me if I'm posting this is the wrong section.
It's been a very long time since I have played magic but I have recently been enjoying playing on MTG Arena. However I am a compulsive card collector and more than that I'm interested in playing with real cards and joining my local MTG community.
Overtime I have put aside cash pool to help get me started in current standard (standard from Autumn onwards). Here's my question, my plan is to purchase 3x booster boxes of each current standard set in hopes that this will give me the best variety of cards to work with. I don't have a particular build in mind to start with and I like the idea of having variety and being able to play around and build multiple decks.
Is this the best way to go about getting started? And out of 3 display boxes per set can I expect to get full playsets ranging from common to rare?
I'm aware it's a lot of money to spend but I've put some aside for this so I have no qualms about spending it. I'd just like to know if this is the correct way to go about it.
First, be aware that right not standard contains 8 different sets while in about 10 days standard will shrink down to 5 sets. So make you are buying the relevant sets if you truly intend on doing this. I won't try and dissuade you as you already seem determined I will only provide you with some numbers.
Lets first look at uncommons. A set contains about 80 uncommons and you will want a playset of each. Your three box plan will net you 324 uncommons while you need 320; this looks good but because you are getting a random selection of cards you won't exactly hit your playset but we can call this close enough.
Second, let's look at rares. A set contains about 53 rares a playset will run you 212 rares. Your plan of buying three boxes of a set means you will get roughly 98 rares.
Finally mythics; a set has 15 mythics for a needed 60 copies. at three boxes you will open about 15 mythics.
It's obvious by those numbers you listed that mathematically it wouldn't be possible for me to get complete playsets from 3 boxes unless I had some inconceivable luck. Which is unfortunate as it makes it a little less worth it for me.
Also, I'm aware of the upcoming standard changes, thankfully playing mtg arena made me aware of this fact.
Buying multiple booster boxes isn't something set in stone for me, I'm just looking for the best possible option for a good start.
Depending on what is available to you and what you enjoy there are many options to join mtg. The simplest buy-in is to simply pick an established deck and purchase just that and play until your resources allow you to do the same again. More complicated methods would be to start with Throne and only do limited events, sealed and draft, you continue this building a sizable collection until next year when standard rotates and your collection is essentially all of standard.
