Hi, I have just recently been getting back into MtG, and it seems like they've exploded into a million new products... I'm having some trouble keeping it all straight. I understand "welcome booster" is a new thing, starting with core set 2021. And it's more like a "promo pack" in the sense that it has no variation - every pack contains the exact same set of cards. Right? I see that Zendikar Rising will have one of these as well. But were there any other sets in between 2021 and ZR that got this? Were there even any sets at all between those two? I feel like there were. I feel like 4 or 5 sets have been released in the last few months alone. It feels like while the rest of the world is put on hold, MtG has ramped up production to the point that we're all drinking from a fire hose of new cards, art variants, product types, etc.
There will not be any welcome boosters between M21 and ZR, as they are the last two of the four 'premier sets' of the year. (premier set refers to the big standard rotating releases, that evolve the MTG story etc)
The other sets you are probably referring to as being released between this time are 'supplement' releases, things that are extra and are not a regular part of the normal releases, as these fit into 'slots' that are open within the year (usually so something new is released monthly). Also due to the covid situation, it has made it seem that a lot has been released in a rather small time, due to printing and delivery issues, such as Double Masters and Jumpstart, but these are standalone releases, not necessarily for new players.
As Welcome boosters are made with new players in mind, they were usually only made for 'Core sets' or to say the yearly 'generic' premier set, which M21 is (in one form or another in pervious years). As there seems to be a welcome pack for ZR, my guess would be that they may release a welcome pack for each premier set, to help new players join the game year round and not just with a single release a year window.
Gosh that is a ton of sets this year! I had no idea. I've just been getting back into MtG, mostly lured in by the various new art gimmicks. I can't help myself haha.
So here's all the different kids of booster packs that I knew about when I started this thread:
Draft Booster - the normal thing we've all been used to
Theme Booster - more cards, constrained to a color of theme, seems to be for deck building
Collector Booster - big money, awesome art
Welcome Booster - intended for people new to mtg, every pack contains the same curated set of cards
Set Booster - the latest new type, optimized for fun opening experience
But then I just saw a couple other types of booster pack while poking around online:
Promo Pack - seeing a lot of these on ebay... how were they originally supposed to be acquired? How do they differ from "welcome booster"?
VIP Edition - introduced in double masters... will this become a recurring pack type? How does it differ from "collector booster"?
