I like the older borders better because the colored portion of the border was prettier and much more aesthetically pleasing. The old borders actually felt like part of the art. The cards just felt more flavorful, and the style was more befitting for something that is supposed to be a magical spell. Even the text boxes were cool and different from each other.

To be fair a lot of those examples are using more stylistic and less highly rendered art that they don't use anymore so I don't really find that comparison that valid. Personally I prefer how the art used to look and I feel that a lot of my bias towards the old borders is based on that.
I like the old best but it's not really a big deal to me as long as it's not the future shifted frame. I think that's one of the worst things wizards has ever done with the game. Ever. Right behind flip cards (and I don't mean the Kamigawa ones).
This has been a subject of discussion for my friends and myself for quite a while, as I'm sure it has for many of us. I like both of the borders, actually. For the gold cards especially I prefer the new border, but all of my lands are old border. I really really love the darker borders for old lands, particularly sets like Mirage and Onslaught.
I quit at the start of 8th edition because of the new borders. However, since I've gotten back into magic I highly prefer the new borders to the old because it looks more organized and stylish. I still nostalgia over the old borders here and there but I'm happy where they took it.
Old borders have a more mystical, intriguing look to them.
New borders are more functional and work better.
I prefer old, myself. I'm fine giving up a little readability to gain the nostalgically attractive flavor of the old borders. They just look more interesting.
If its easy enough to read im fine with old boarder and some times prefer the new old boarders. The more difficult ones to read are where i prefer the new ones. When im lookinf through cards i find the new one better as they are much much easier to read

How is the "new" border still the "new" border? It's 10 years old! When I saw this thread, I was thinking "There's a new border?" Magic cards are ripe and ready for a face lift, by the way.
I started playing back in Onslaught. Personally, I like the Future Shifted > Old > Current. Both the old and current borders are very bad, IMO, and the least attractive of any major TCG I've seen.
New card layout is easier to read, has bigger art, wastes less space with a big border and is easier adaptable (see level up, flip, fuse and planeswalker cards). The only thing that speaks for the old layout is nostalgia. And since "that's the way we did it in the old times" is not a compelling argument by its own, new cards win hands down.
Sure, people might like the old look more. Can't argue with taste. But as far as functionality is concerned, the new layout is objectively better.

It is relative. Since there are two different types of layouts and one is older than the other, it makes sense to call the newer one "new", even though many years have passed since its implementation.

No! Definitely not! Mixing two (or even more with colorhifted and futureshifted) different card layouts in a single deck is already bad enough. We certainly do not need to add even more to that mix.
Old border. No question. When I started playing, the cards brought be into an elaborate fantasy land of mythical looking creatures, spells, and places. The borders were perfect for that kind of effect. When I look at new cards, their borders look very vanilla and don't evoke any of that type of reaction. Then, then print stuff like judge foil Noble Hierarch and the fantasy land comes rushing back. What I would really like is for them to mirror the onslaught judge fetches with old border zendikar fetches. If only they could also get rid of that pesky foiling on it too :/

Only new border they got right is the gold frame for multicolored cards. The old frame just feels right for Magic which has always seemed like an ancient fantasy setting to me.

The old frame truely shines as foilcard, though. Looks 10 times bettter than new frame

Anyone who prefers the old border is demonstrably incorrect. I am a scientist. QED.
Your study has insufficient data in order to conclude an analysis.
Nope, I used science. Science! New border's better.

Have you ever seen a Yu-Gi-Oh card or the first Vs System card layout?

Lacking that option, the old borders are my favourite, not to say I don't like the new frames either, ie. all the new framed Ice Age cards.
I prefer Magic cards to actually look like Magic cards.
