So the buds and I were playing Two Headed Giant this past weekend and we had a Balefire Dragon hit the field. When it hit, we weren't sure exactly how its effect took place. Whether it only affected one player's side of the team or both. I'm inclined to believe both but I haven't been able to find an answer one way or the other. My inclination says they share one life total, so all their creatures get hit. They say that it doesn't say each player so I'd have to pick one. Which is it?
When assigning combat damage to the defending team in 2HG, the controller of the attacking creature has to choose one opponent to assign the damage to, and that player will then be dealt that damage and it will be substracted from the shared life total. And because only that player is being deal damage, only his/her creatures will be affected by the dragon's trigger, the other player's creatures will be fine.
edit:
810.7f As the combat damage step begins, the active team announces how each attacking creature will assign its combat damage. If an attacking creature would assign combat damage to the defending team, the active team chooses only one of the defending players for that creature to assign its combat damage to. Then the defending team announces how each blocking creature will assign its combat damage. See rule 510.1.
