Now if you were to create copy of one of these token via populate or some other method (ex: Wake the Reflections, Mirage Mirror, etc.) I assume the new copy would remain in play and not have be exiled as it's not copiable value of the token.
However what happens if you have a card such as Doubling Season in play? My assumption would be that any 'copies' (?duplicates? as they aren't really copies of the tokens, but just more tokens made by the same affect?) would also have to follow the same clause and be exiled at the end of the next end step?
1) Correct, if you copy the token or create another token by populating it will not be exiled. Exiling is a part of the effect from the ability that created it, and it only exiles the object it created. That is not a copiable value of the token.
2) Again correct, doubling season simply makes an additional token but its the same effect that is creating that token so both tokens will be exiled.
Okay on a related topic Vehicles have a ruling that I find counter intuitive...
9/29/2017: If a permanent becomes a copy of a Vehicle, the copy won't be a creature, even if the Vehicle it's copying has become an artifact creature.
I assume that this is because you are copying the card and not the creature???
I'm confused as the copyable values would say its a creature? Does it still happen if you copy (populate) a crewed token that's a replica of a vehicle?
Do cards like Spitting Image or Stolen Identity interact differently with a token vs cards?
So many questions
Copy effects only copy what's printed on the card (or what characteristics the token is created with) plus prior copy effects (=the copiable values). Things like adding/removing rules text, card types, color, abilities, or power/toughness changes all come later in the layer system and thus aren't copied. They don't change the copiable values of an object. Only a scarce few things do: copy effects and being a face down permanent. I can't think of anything else, though I have the nagging feeling, that I'm forgetting one more. (Edit: Transforming a double faced card is the one I forgot.)
Wether the copy is a token or a card (Clone) doesn't matter in this regard.
Okay I'm starting to process it. Looking up the layer system really helped.
So if an effect turns a creature into an artifact for a turn (ex: Liquimetal Coating)
and you make a copy of it some how (ex: Cogwork Assembler)
the resulting token would be a non-artifact version of the creature that you exile at the begging of the next end step
but I could use a card (ex: Wake the Reflections) to populate, copy, etc. during that time and have an identical permanent that I don't have to exile
Flip that whole thing around if for some reason I turn a artifact into a creature (either for the turn or for the rest of the game) and create a token copying that creature. It would be a non-creature and there for not a viable target to populate or other such spells?... I think I'm getting this... slowly
