Ochran Assassin with 4 +1/1 counters attacks a player with 5 creatures capable of blocking; a 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, and a 5/5. We know all blockera must block if able for this attack. Deathtouch means 1 damage is lethal for all blockers. However how is damage assigned by the blockers to the assassin?
Does each blocker deal its damage as it itself is struck? This would mean that the assassin can only kill 1/1, 2/2 and 3/3, or 4/4 and 5/5 or any combination that results in it dying without additional blockers adding damage.
Or does the assassin get to give each blocker 1 damage, then gets killed by the 14 damage coming back its way all at once
Either way the assassin must die, but it determines how many get pulled into the graveyard with her.
Since nothing in your scenario has First or Double Strike, all damage is assigned, and dealt, at the same time. This means the Assassin deals its damage at the same time it is dealt 15 damage. However, the Assassin only has 1 damage to deal so it will, at most, kill one blocking creature. You don't get to assign more than 1 damage total among all blocking creatures.
The attacker announces how all attacking creatures deal damage. Before this the blockers have been ordered in which order they are blocked and each creature must be assigned lethal damage before assigning any damage to the next creature in line. But since the assassin has deathtouch one damage is considered lethal damage so you can assign one damage to each creature blocking it.
702.2c Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage for the purposes of determining if a proposed combat damage assignment is valid, regardless of that creature's toughness. See rules 510.1c-d.
The defender assigns combat damage for teh defending creatures.
Then all damage is dealt at the same time (baring things like first strike)
510.2. Second, all combat damage that's been assigned is dealt simultaneously. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack. No player has the chance to cast spells or activate abilities between the time combat damage is assigned and the time it's dealt.
The whole set of pages about the turn structure at the link I posted is a great resource to get a hang of the finer details about what happens at what parts of a turn.

Incorect, the assassin had 4 +1/+1 counters on it.

Thanks for the quick replies Hugseal and WizardMN. I thought that the I got to distribute the damage between them all. However convincing my opponent was another challenge all together. He managed to plant the seed of doubt in me about my rules interpretation.

Basically all damage is dealt simultaneously.
