Hi guys, I'm new to competitive play, this happened at competitive REL:
Opponent loots with Jace, Vryn's Prodigy during his first main phase. He then goes to combat. During his second main phase, he counts the cards in his graveyard and there are 5 cards (no cards were added during combat, so he was at 5 after looting with Jace), then he looks at Jace. I told him to go ahead and transform it. My reasoning was that because Jace transforming is not a "may" and is part of the ability he had activated, the transforming had technically already happened and my opponent was just making it visible.
My more experienced friend, who was watching the game, told me afterwards that I shouldn't have allowed it and called a judge. I think he is right, but I'm curious what the ruling would have been. Would my opponent have been allowed to transform the Jace or not?
Card tags are mandatory when asking questions in the Magic Rulings forum. Please check your private messages to learn how to use them. I’ve added them for this post. -MadMage
In general you should always call a judge when a game error occurs. The judge will look at the game state and determine what the appropriate fix is. For instance if significant decisions have been made with faulty information it may be determined too detrimental to fix.
