Let's say I have an Aegis of the Gods on the field as well as the artifact equipment Sword of Body and Mind. It's my turn and I pay two colorless to equip the sword to my creature and my opponent casts Shock on Aegis of the Gods. Does the equip ability go on the stack and Shock hits before the sword can be equipped or does the sword get equipped first thus saving my creature from getting destroyed. I can see the argument for both but wanted to make sure. Any help would be most appreciated
In this scenario, your opponent has the chance to cast Shock, and when it resolves, Aegis of the Gods will be dealt damage and be destroyed soon after (C.R. 117.3b, 117.5, 704.5g), so that Sword of Body and Mind won't attach to Aegis of the Gods.
The equip ability will go on the stack when you activate it, and any other player can cast instant spells (such as Shock) in response to it (C.R. 702.6a, 117.7). And when the creature targeted by the equip ability leaves the battlefield, the equip ability will fail to resolve (C.R. 608.2b). Remember: Like any other activated ability, an equip ability has no effect unless and until it resolves (C.R. 608.2c, 609.1). And the equip ability can resolve only if all players pass in a row while that ability is on top of the stack (C.R. 117.4, 608.2c).
If your opponent responded to your equip, then the Shock is placed on the Stack above the equip ability, and happens first, killing the creature.
Since you would get the turn to act if you had equipped the creature without interruption, it wouldn't have been your opponent's turn to cast a spell if he or she meant to do it after the sword was attached. That's why I can be sure that the opponent meant to respond by speaking up at that time.
You should presume that any ability or spell you use, goes to the Stack and is able to be pre-empted with a response in this way. Actions that don't use the Stack are the most special.
