I saw a card that I'm confused about; I don't know why it even works: Firestorm Phoenix.
I thought that an object that changes a zone becomes a "new object". So why is it possible to write "It can't be played again until its owner's next turn." and the game still "knows" which particular Phoenix can't be played again?
The ability is actually part of the card in the one zone it comes through: the in-hand zone. When the replacement effect happens, it gains the effect as the card in your hand. If you change the zones of the Phoenix and return it to hand, you could play it since it's a new object.
The logistics of the card is an honor-system; if it was to be played, you would need to provide evidence that it was not the same one that you played the last turn.

It does - but when an effect moves an object between zones, it "has access to" both the old object and the new. And if it places an effect on either one, it kinda has to be the new one, doesn't it?
There are lots of effects that do this. "Return <that card> to play at end of turn" is probably the most obvious kind, but an effect like Clone's is the most comparable to Firestorm Phoenix's. Both are replacment effects originally "applied" in the previous zone, that place a continuing effect on the object in the new zone.
Being able to function is not the issue in those other threads. "How does it know" is, and yes there are issues that require an honor system.
