Say an opponent is at 1 life and is facing 1 trample damage if he blocks with his blood artist.
Does he die, even though the blood artist's effect would gain him a life? Im assuming he dies, because he goes to 0 life before blood artist triggers the "on dies" effect.
When the attacking creature deals its combat damage, 1 damage is dealt to the blood artist and 1 damage is dealt to the defending player, reducing his life total to 0. Right after that, the game checks State-based Actions, and sees a player at 0 or less life, and makes that player lose the game. This all happens before Blood Artist's triggered ability would even go on the stack, let alone resolve, so its ability won't save the player from losing the game.
