I have a Humble Defector out from last turn so it is not summoning sick. I activate the Defector. In response to the trigger I cast Restoration Angel and pass priority. My opponent has no responses and passes back, so the Angel resolves. I target the Humble Defector with the flicker ETB ability. What happens now?
The defector will come back untapped, correct? Assuming I don't do anything else and let the original ability resolve, what happens to the Defector? My understanding was that when a card references itself, it is referencing that specific instance of the card. The ability will look for the particular Defector that activated the it, but the flickered Defector is a new card so there will be no eligible defector to hand over. Is this correct?
You understand it correctly. When an object changes zones, it becomes a new object with no memory of its previous existence. Since abilities exist independently of their source, the fact that the original Defector is not around is irrelevant.
