If someone uses Rabid Bite (Target creature you control deals damage equal to its power to target creature you don't control.) on a creature with Trample, would Trample be triggered?
When asking rules questions, card tags should be used:
Trample does not "trigger". It just affects how a creature deals combat damage. Since Rabid Bite has nothing to do with Combat Damage, Trample will not have any effect when the creatures fight.
No. Trample is relevant only at the moment an attacking creature assigns combat damage (C.R. 702.19a), and Rabid Bite's damage isn't combat damage. (Note also that trample doesn't "trigger".)
I apologize for any lack in etiquette and terminology. Thank you for the responses, I assumed that was the case but could not find any literature to disprove my opponent.
Combat Damage Damage dealt during the combat damage step by attacking creatures and blocking creatures as a
consequence of combat. See rule 510, “Combat Damage Step.”
702.19a Trample is a static ability that modifies the rules for assigning an attacking creature’s
combat damage. The ability has no effect when a creature with trample is blocking or is dealing
noncombat damage. (See rule 510, “Combat Damage Step.”)
