I'm not so well informed about the game lore but my brother gave me his old collection which featured almost full Fallen Empires set.
I really digged the flavor and the different art works, specially the black faction (the Ebon Hand).
I would like to know what the thrull is, why they later appear in phyrexian cards and in Orzhov cards. I imagine then some kind of enginnered creatures by black mana but i don't understand the flavor behind white thrulls.
Thrulls were originally created by Endrek Sahr by order of the Order of the Ebon Hand. They were meant to be used as both a weapon and servile race as the conditions on Sarpadia continued to worsen.
Endrek, for the record, stole the tech and methods from Phyrexia, something that, when they learned of it, took very very poorly and ended up torturing Endrek to death. This is one of the ancient and semi-lost stories known as The Interrogation.
Eventually the Thrulls were improved to the point that they were too powerful and numerous to control and quickly toppled the Ebon Hand.
As to what they actually are, they are the results of melting down dead flesh into an ooze and then reanimating it, with additional instructions as to what forms they will take. Those forms are substantially influenced by what went into the mix in the first place, like if you dumped lizard flesh and cow flesh in there, the resultant thrull would very likely have features of both mixed somewhere in there, but normally the thrull pit had hundreds of samples/specimens contributing to the Thrulls.
The Ravnican thrulls remind me of those blobby things from Howl's Moving Castle. I did think, however, that they were just reanimated dead flesh, rather than primordial soup given a shape.
The info about why thrulls came back. There's no real lore reason, but it's because they flavorfully made sense in Orzhov and were pretty popular the first go around.
I like the potential connection here to thrulls and Phyrexian newts, given that Endrek utilized Phyrexian methods.
As for connection between Ravnican thrulls and Dominarian/Phyrexian thrulls, I would imagine they were separately created, as we have no suggestion that there is a Phyrexian connection to Ravnica, even when it was frequented by pre-Mending planeswalkers.

I thought Endrek's death was pretty clearly spelled out on the Derelor's flavor text - he was executed by the Order for his failure in creating that particular thrull.

Nah, pretty sure that's an execution order signed by Endrek rather than one calling for his head.
Essentially, he's calling it a failed experiment and they'd better scrap it.
I thought I read on the mothership he was sucked in by a time rift just before he got axed, which is why he reappeared in Time Spiral.
Despite Armored Cancrix most of the time displacements were sent back, some of them very nearly instantly. Part of this is the simple fact that they couldn't really have people like Mishra running around modern day magic, particularly since they need to be back in their own time to fulfill their roles.
It's all very "what if" in those terms.

Look at the Fallen Empires version, the flavor text states more clearly that it's "From the execution order for Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder". He's the one getting the axe.
Or whatever the heck the Hand used. Don't wanna think about it too much.

Honestly, even if it's the case, it doesn't really matter. We know the Phyrexians got to him first.
Sahr's ultimate creation was the derelor, an extremely powerful equine breed of thrull. The derelor required a constant supply of black mana to sustain, taxing the Order's resources. This failure prompted Sahr's execution. Endrek would not witness the Thrull Rebellion, but his mastery in design would be seen in the thrulls' capacity to destroy their masters, their creators, and all of Sarpadia itself.

Well...alternate timelines, wibbly-wobbly (NO! not repeating it!)...things might not have been hurt too much, especially if something was different enough to show it was an alternate one.
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
The card says "execution order of" which means his signing the order.
Look at each printing for Derelor:
Fallen Empires "Strength it has, but at the cost of a continuous supply of energy. Such failure can bear only one result."
—From the execution order for Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder
Fifth Edition "The derelor's greatest contribution to the Ebon Hand was the inspirational effect its creator's execution had upon the other thrull breeders."
—Sarpadian Empires, vol. II
Sixth Edition "Strength it has, but at the cost of a continuous supply of energy. Such failure can bear only one result."
—Execution order of Endrek Sahr,
master breeder
The Sixth Edition flavor text can give the appearance that Endrek Sahr signed the execution order, but the other two printings clearly point at Sahr being the executed.
While on Endrek Sahr, he also taught Sarpadia's elves how to grow fungi called thallids for food. That...also didn't work out so well. The thrulls and the thallids are all that remains of Sarpadian civilization now (hence the set name), though the merfolk went through a time portal to show up in the future.
By the way, Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder even has his eventual demise codified mechanically: Get too many thrulls, and he's sacrificed.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

And the fun part is, they didn't even use time rifts shenanigans to do so.
The interesting thing is that we've been told that the thrulls have become insanely powerful after years and years of self-refinement on Sarpadia and the only thing keeping them from utterly dominating all of Dominaria is the fact that they cannot conceive of a world larger than the ruins of Sarpadia.

this thread is making me think how much saproling, thrulls and homarids were awesome (not mechanically, but the concept). i hope they all will return soon
Well, naturally saprolings will. Thrulls have proven popular as well... but unfortunately homarids aren't likely. Which is a shame because I really like them, but merfolk are going to dance all over their faces for the competition of representing blue. They'll find a way to shoehorn the fish people in even if it they have to bend the story to do so.
If Merfolk absolutely cannot make sense (which they won't use because the fishies have too many fans) then they'll fall back on Vedalken.
Even in terms of using races that don't get their day in the sun, we have the Cephalids, though from what I understand they were not that popular. Not to mention the barely hinted at Amphins. Of course, chances are, if they can't make merfolk and vedalken work, they'd end up making Wizards a big thing instead, choosing class over race.
i love both homarids and cephalids. i hope they will return soon.
and last block where we had some saprolings was alara (core sets are an exception but they aren't token centric). oh there was one saproling-making card in return to ravnica. only one... i'm so sad
That's because Populate was a major thing. They expected you to use that to fill in your tokens.
I don't think we're ever going to see Cephalids again. They were really really low on the scale.
Saprolings are actually a little bit less likely to show up in the future after R&D decided to make green the "go big" color and white the "go wide" color.
Green gets fewer creatures, but they tend to be bigger; white gets more creatures, but they tend to be smaller.
So green doesn't have as much mechanical need for lots of little dudes.
They'll still show up, just not in the volume they had before.
Yep. The dwarves were wiped out by the orcs, and a couple goblins. (And by "a couple", I'm being literal. There are like, two goblins in Fallen Empires. Oddly, it's the set that gave us Goblin Grenade, a card which has won me more games than I can count, and a few years ago, I used it as part of a three-card combo to do 11 damage to my opponent on turn 3.) The merfolk, as I mentioned, got a lethal case of the crabs (but were sent into the future, just in time for the Phyrexian invasion).
And Icatia? (the white faction) Icatia fell to religious fanatics led by Farrel. And this guy. White has a lynching flavor to some of its removal, as you can see. I just find his appearance a bit uncanny.

To add credance to this, the flavor text of Mourning Thrull:
During their ascent to spirithood, patriarchs of Orzhova shed both flesh and emotion. This earthly slag is collected and formed into thrulls.
Honestly, even if it's the case, it doesn't really matter. We know the Phyrexians got to him first.
