“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
If its of any use, while the Kraken wasn't in Greek myth, it's comparable to Ceto within the films.
Interesting I never thought of that.
Also I know the minor gods are not on the list, I'm waiting until we get more information about them.

I would decimate a city-state to have a legendary reference to Galatea.
I could see that as a card. An artifact that once you trigged something became a creature.

Isn't the Spear of Heliod a reference to Zeus' Thunderbolt? As is Lightning Strike.
Lost in a Labyrinth is a reference to the Cretan Labyrinth
Swan Song is a (loose) reference to Leda and the Swan, although it could just be referring to the swan symbolism in some myths.
Peak Eruption is a reference to the Eruption of Vesuvius (and the Roman city of Pompeii)
Purphoros' Emmissary is a reference to Helios' cattle.
Arbor Colossus is a reference to the Rhodes Colossus, and there are a lot of references to the Colossus in this set. It's even a pretty good pun.
Anax and Cymede reference a king and queen pair I can't remember the names of at the moment, but they are from a semi-famous myth. It is possibly Perseus and Andromeda.

It's Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. The first letters of their names and that they are soldiers are a dead giveaway.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).

Wow, good call. I usually just follow the more fantasic elements of mythology (such as the gods and monsters) that I don't pay enough attention to the mortals (the fact that Agamemnon and Clytemnestra is so bloody hard to remember, much less spell, doesn't help XD).
That really makes me want to check a few things....
- Anyone has idea who Anthoussa, Setessan Hero, may be referring to?
- Has there been any Satyr who is a reference to Pan?
- Xenagos, the Reveler, is a party dude who ascended, and wants to be a god. Potential, if far off, reference to Dyonisus (especially in regards to his name, which translates to "twice-born")?

I'm guessing she is a reference to an amazon, but I don't think every legendary creature will be based on a Greek Myth. We will have references but it would be like comparing Grimgrin to Frankenstein's monster or Olivia to Dracula. Yes their is influences but at the end of the day they are (semi) original magic characters.

MaRo has said that the way Greek and Roman culture shaped each other, especially in public consciousness, that a few Roman references were bound to show up.
If anyone can think of a prominent volcano reference in Greek mythology, by all means.
Of course, there's always the chance the volcano isn't trying to reference anything?
The entire cycle is a development pushed thing. One of the cards is a reprint, and three of them are color-shifted versions of othercolorhate cards.
Arbor Colossus is a reference to the Rhodes Colossus, and there are a lot of references to the Colossus in this set. It's even a pretty good pun.
What does arbor colossus have to do with a giant statue over a city's harbor entrance? Arbor colossus is likely just a reference to the many titans in greek mythology, along with the other giants in Theros.
Also, we do have a picture of a giant bronze statue above the entrance of a city, likely Akros. That would be the reference to the Colossus of Rhodes, not a giant human living in a forest.

Santorini is at least one, I think. And Pompeii, while not myth, did take place during Ancient Greece.

And krish, if you're waiting for Scylla and Charybdis, I am waiting for Typhon and Echidna
Guess we may not be able to add much until we get either the full spoiler or the next sets.
References to Typhon and Echidna may show up before the end of the block...
That would be Prognostic Sphinx or Medomai.

Not quite! They don't quite ask the riddles nor kill themselves if answered correctly. (And not quite female)
In my opinion anyway.
Gah! Thank you! I could not for the life of me remember.

I just lumped it all together with Heliod, do you guys think I should add the god weapons to the list?
It's on the list dude
I just figured it was a reference to swan symbolism in greek mythology.
Theros is strictly Greek, no Roman references.
I don't think so, otherwise Heliod would have gotten the Ox emmissary
I'll add it

It's a reference to the Minoan eruption that pretty much wiped out the entire Minoan culture.
Basically... The island exploded, hard.

Titan's Strength references Sisyphus.
Satyr Piper seems to be.
Colossus of Akros looks more like a reference to the Colossus of Rhodes than Arbor Colossus does.
Anvilwrought Raptor. A reference to Bubo the mechanical owl from Clash of the Titans?
Fleetfeather Sandals, Hermes' sandals.
Vulpine Goliath, Cadmean Fox?
Can anyone explain why Bronze Sable would be classified as a Satyr? Is this possibly a reference to something?
