Elspeth may be a slight play on Athena as well, having the favor of Zeus (Heliod) and maybe a little Pop culture Xena as well.
Hoping for an Adonis, more Oracles (Pythia as a Legendary), Aphrodite's making roses red, King Aegis and the Aegean sea, the Lotus eaters, the tempest that blows Odysseus off course, Jason and the Argonauts, Helen of Troy (or is she from Anax and Cymede?), soothsayers, etc.
I too am disappointed with making what should have been Legendary creatures into races/tribes instead. What happened to the set having above average Legendaries?
I hope they expand more on the Dakra isles as an analog to the Cyclades. Especially Santorini, since there are legitimate theories that it may have been Atlantis (and at least had a volcanic eruption then).

I think Elspeth's story is more of a reference to a greek hero's journey.

He started out as that, they maybe have put a better reference to him later in the block. Until then I'm gonna wait to add him to the list.

I don't think Thassa has elements of Athena, I think that her role as a god of tactics and strategy will be covered more by Iroas(the RW war god). See Master Warcraft and Boros Battleshaper. Since Iroas is the "good" war god (the one they pray to before war, as opposed to Mogis representing all of war's negatives), and RW already has "battle tactics" cards, I think Athena will be split between Iroas(strategy) and maybe the UW(don't remember the name) for crafts.
I don't have a link to the interview but it was explicitly stated that Thassa has elements of Poseidon and Athena in that Blue on the color wheel represents wisdom, which is Athena's domain.

You might want to count them out. Barring the obligatory 20 legend block that was Ravnica, the number of legends is pretty above average, I feel.
Looking through I saw 19 legendary permanents (5 gods, 5 god weapons, 1 land and 8 creatures).

Hm, Ephara does have a cleric card in Theros. I know they mentioned the poison demigoddess. Do you know where they first mentioned Ephara as a UW god specifically though?
I was expecting closer to Kamigawa level, but less.

I think it's more of a process of elimination thing. We know the R/W, B/W, and G/W gods, or at least are fairly certain on them. Ephara shows up on a white card, which leaves only Blue/White as a color combination for her. It's similar reasoning for Phenax being Blue/Black: All the other color combinations are filled in for black, and Phenax has a disciple in black, meaning she has to be blue/black.
There where a few but generally dragons where wingless. I'll edit the main post.

I don't know if it's been mentioned somwehere on MTGS or if it is the right topic, but did you notice the vanilla creatures flavor texts are actually telling a story? I guess that by the time we get to Journey into Nix, every of those texts can daisy chain to recount The Theriad. I guess this is the fantasy take on the Iliad.
EDIT: sorry, I just realized there's a dedicated thread for this. My apologies.
For fun I added the colors the creature types appear in.

Pharika is a possible reference to Asclepius, the figurehead of medicine. That Pharika is implied to appear snake-like (see Pharika's Cure), and that one of her disciple is a gorgon (Pharika's Mender), I certainly think that's the reference.
Iroas being called the god of victory is probably a reference to Nike, goddess of victory. Although we don't know much about what Iroas do, so, yeah.

Pharika is the god of both poison and cure and as such closely associated with snakes, which makes sense, because snake venom can be used to cure poisoning.
Also, most spells referencing Pharika are snake-based, Viper's Kiss quotes someone called Aescalos, which is too close to Asclepius to be a coincidence.
Furthermore, Pharika is shown on the card Pharika's Cure through a statue of her. You can see that her lower torso seems to be segmented and/or scaled and snakelike.

I think you misunderstand the point of this thread. This is for pointing out references to real-world Greek mythology/culture, not previous Magic cards.

When it comes to Greek philosophers and engineers, I hope to see an equivalent to Archimedes in one of the expansions to Theros.

Nope, not even close. I think you meant Flametongue Kavu, which is the card closest to the Fanatic of Mogis mechanically.

Fanatic to Mogis is to Flametongue Kavu what Mizzium Mortars is to Flame Rift.
Which is to say they have nothing in common mech
