I would love to see Ajani (after Return to Theros--or with Elspeth in the Underworld, would be to the "Returned of Theros"?) go off on a walkabout or some personal quest and disappear from the story for 5 years or so, only to officially return as an older and wiser mentor of heroes. I know they've sped up his life story and maturity, but I think it'd be neat to see a character disappear only to reappear quite a few years down the line. Ajani, in my opinion, would best fit this option, as he is already a Wise Old Man figure.

^He still has business in Alara. And he also probably has a target on his head from Bolas. Plus, he is aware of Mirrodin's plight and has interest in saving it. These scenarios wouldn't actually develop his character directly, but it gives him room to develop without shoehorning him into a story.
I do not think so. The ending of Alara Unbroken seems that with avenging Jazal and making peace with Zaliki, he achieved inner peace and has no reason to return there.

However, there's that snippet in one of the Mirrodin Besieged comics where Ajani tells Elspeth that Alara can still be saved (Or was it Bant?). It shows that he has some lingering concerns for the plane.

I could dig this. Ajani seems to be the oldest and wisest of the Neo-walkers and with Mentor of Heroes and Steadfast they've been progressing him towards a sort of sage teacher of other walkers. This sort of disappearance only for him to show up on some lost plane like Equilor as an enlightened sage with some great wisdom to impart or even to help with one last battle.
Just out of curiosity...how would you feature and progress Ajani's character at this point, especially if "Return to Theros" is not an option for some 2-3 years from now?
Not to mention that both Ajani and Garruk were featured in last year's releases. Gideon was two and a half years ago, and if Nissa did not get her rebooted character card in M15, it would be even longer.
I'm not a writer on the Creative Team, bud. It isn't my job to keep characters relevant. Good writers know how to though, instead of tucking a character away and hoping you forget them.
As an avid reader of comic books, it's pretty freaking easy to develop and keep characters relevant. And, y'know, since Ajani is such a big part of Magic, an equivalent would be DC throwing out Batman after perhaps the most acclaimed Batman story of the 2000s, "Under the Red Hood" because the "character is complete" or some other excuse.
Finally, I hope you realize Jace has been featured in a story every year since Return to Ravnica, AND played a bigger part in Duels 2015 than Garruk did, despite Garruk being the one in all the promotional material. Before that, the first and last time Garruk showed up in a block was a bit role in Innistrad block where he was prominent in only one Savor the Flavor thing before being left hanging until last year. How many Uncharted Realms stories has Garruk gotten? Two? How many has Jace? Exactly.
In summation, you can't use "X character has run its course" as a justification for characters not being featured. It's not that Creative has nothing to do with the character, it's that they don't want to do anything with the character, which is pretty sad.
Hey, Tibalt, Koth, Domri and Tamiyo fans, I gotch ya back.

Just out of curiosity...how would you feature and progress Ajani's character at this point, especially if "Return to Theros" is not an option for some 2-3 years from now?
I really hoped you can provide some reasonable ideas and enlighten me. Well, I shall know better for the future.
Or you can try and convince me that you got something more in you than a chronic, tiresome complainer.
And you know, *bud*...Jace is the poster child of Magic, of planeswalkers. They made him it, they said it. He's essentially involved in everything important that is going on.
It is a pity you hate him so much, but essentially, all you can do is deal with it

Get it now? I've my own ideas where Ajjy could go, but that's going offtopic and belongs in a fanfiction section, wouldn't you think?

Allow me to reiterate: You got nothing, dude
With the extent of what is discussed here, how broad the discussion is, and the walls of text you are usually writing, it would not hurt to throw in an idea or two.
The only thing you are capable of to criticize and (borderline) troll. It gets old and boring.

Let me break down what you're doing, because you may not even realize you're doing it.
You ask me to post fanfic of what Ajani could do. Anyone could do that, but you want me to post it so you can nitpick whatever I type. You'll then use that as a way to justify that "Ajani is done," even though my ideas for future plots of the character are pretty irrelevant.
Do you understand why I won't post it now? See, it would be doing a disservice to the character and fans of the character because people like you prefer to nitpick unrelated details in a post to try to discredit the whole idea.

I was genuinely interested, because you style yourself such an expert on MTG story, creative writing and all...
You failed to respond, and you keep digging a still deeper hole by your half-baked evasive "reasoning" why you won't post anything. The last sentence is crystalline pure paranoia.
Whatever. Keep making an you-know-what of yourself.
And just for the record, TerrorKingA. If you write nonsenses or just troll (Yeah, Griselbrand doesn't look intimidating at all... , he's absolute cutie), you can count on me to be there to "nitpick". As for now, I am done with you for the time being.
TK: There's nothing wrong with posting a couple of ideas. I did it a few posts ago. If you're afraid that people will criticize your ideas then you might need to take a good long look at yourself. It's also not for you to say what his intentions were in asking for your ideas. I'd like to know as well as I think for the most part Ajani has run his course and can be put on the back burner for a while to give some light for other characters like Gideon. And yes I can use that justification as they may well not want to use that character for a while.
Caranthir. You're not going to get anything that way. He doesn't have to be so... confrontational but then again you don't have to respond in kind.
TK: There's nothing wrong with posting a couple of ideas. I did it a few posts ago. If you're afraid that people will criticize your ideas .
I dunno if you realized, but people have stopped for hours.
And if that's what you got from my post, maybe re-read it a couple more times. I don't give a crap about it being criticized, I give a crap about it being criticized as a way to lessen the main point of "Ajani is not played out."
Seems to me you care about being criticized because you wont give a reason as to why he's not played out. There is more taken from your point by not giving an idea as to where he could go than anything we could say about the quality of your idea. Not to mention you're the one that said "RIP Ajani and Garruk" when you don't know whether or not Ajani will show up again in the block after BFZ and being that it is in all likely a block focused around Lili, Garruk is likely to show up.

Make a thread elsewhere more conducive to fanfiction or pm me and I'll gladly share with you my ideas. But for the purposes of this thread, you'll never get anything out of me because it distracts from the point at hand. I don't see how you do not get this.
"Oh, I don't like that idea. I guess Ajani really is played out" is what anyone posting a story is likely to accomplish.
Look at Ashiok in the Uncharted Realms thread who had everyone in agreement with him until he "fixed" the dialogue. When he did, it caused quite a few people to come out of the woodwork decrying his changes and thus weakening his point.
They're rotating the cast around. Some PWs will appear more than others, the Origins 5, to maintain some familiarity in the lore. Ajani has a role on Theros now, and we know it's a popular plane that we'll return to soon enough and resolve his story then before he departs to the next challenge. Considering Elspeth is dead and still not considered out of the picture, I highly doubt there are grounds to count Ajani out yet. We can't feasibly follow every PW all at once... it's unreasonable to get upset about that. Clearly they select the best characters for the story and follow them for a block, then visit other stories. The multiverse would feel small and redundant otherwise. Jace in BFZ is a respectable way to involve a very popular character in a relevant story to him. I would have loved to see Tamiyo involved in BFZ considering her scholarly approach, but Jace was a better fit for the job, and Tamiyo can continue being the curious explorer she is and show up in a less war-torn setting. In Avacyn Restored she became prominent when things were looking up for Innistrad and I'm sure we'll see her again on a quieter plane researching neat things.
I do not think so. The ending of Alara Unbroken seems that with avenging Jazal and making peace with Zaliki, he achieved inner peace and has no reason to return there.
