So Bolas's plan has always been a tangled mess of seemingly unrelated things, in my opinion. But I have a theory that gives a little bit of explanation of at least the part where Bolas is after Ravnica. And that answer is: Nephilim. We know very little about them, but what we do know is:
- They were imprisoned under Ravnica
- They have the ability to absorb power from other beings (5 of them got out in original Ravnica block, ate a dragon corpse, and got so powerful the guilds had to cooperate to stop them)
- The ones we have seen were not legendary, meaning they aren't unique
So, if there are more nephilim still trapped under Ravnica, (which is just a theory, not confirmed, that I know of), then perhaps Bolas grabbed the immortal sun from Ixilan so he could trap other planeswalkers on Ravnica, then feed them to the nephilim to make a nearly unstoppable army, which he could then eternalize and send through the planar portal to wherever he wants. Or maybe he has a way to draw power from the Nephilim. Whatever his end goal is, the existance of the Nephilim might be why Bolas is targeting Ravnica of all places. Any thoughts?
I actually think what Bolas is after on Ravnica is related to the plane's natural law magic. From what I understand, Ravnica has naturally occurring magic that binds its inhabitants into systems of hierarchy, and Azor co-opted this to establish his guild system. Something tells me that there's a reason the story mentioned that.
Ravnica has some powerful elements hidden under the surface regardless, so it's really anyone's guess what he's after.
That's an interesting theory too. Do we know much the law magic can effect? I know Jace used to on Azor on Ixilan, but Azor was already part of the system, in a sense, being that he was involved in the laws that the magic follows. I wonder if the law magic could effect people outside the system of laws as well. It feels really ambiguous how law magic works. Granted, I've only been keeping up with lore since they went away from writing novels, so my knowledge of older lore is based entirely on the wiki, but other than Jace being the guildpact and Teysa using a law spell in the one lore article for commander 2015, it's not something that's touched on much, from what I've seen. Although it would be hilarious if Bolas took control of the magic, then tried to use it somewhere else only to find that the plane he tries to use it on is outside of his jurisdiction...
