So Ive just realized that Tezzeret was never on Mirrorin for anything to do with the Phyrexians.
With the plot for GRN laid out with Bolas wanting to group a bunch of planeswalkers on the same plane and locking them there with the Immortal Sun what remains is how does he intend to use this to regain his former powers. That is where the Tezzeret’s time on Mirrodin/New Phyrexia comes into play
Bolas already had spies on Mirrodin, and wouldn’t really have an issue with the Mirrodins losing the war so long as Phyrexia remained planelocked after the war. The new walkers are not inherently immune to compleation without the aid of someone like Melira, so why send Tezzeret specifically?
Bolas sent his pet artificer to the plane to see how the soul traps functioned and how Memnarch was able to harvest a spark from it. Tezzeret only got involved with the Praetors to gain access to the core of Mirrodin where the Panopticon was built. This is the end game for the showdown on Ravnica. Bolas draws the Gatewatch to the plane with his Eternal army, where he already has something like the panopticon built, locks everyone there with the Immortal Sun and sets off a cataclysm to harvest the spark of every new walker present to absorb.
I am still dubious of the "Trap Planeswalkers absorb their sparks" plan, if only because it does not make sense for Nicol Bolas to do that plan on Ravnica when he has plenty of planes he already controls to do it on.

It may have something to do with the nature of the plane. Mirrodin worked for Memnarch because he was able to figure out when the next sun would rise from the mana core at the center of the plane. Maybe he’s planning on manipulating Jace and the Guildpact to achieve it.
I know that creative sent Tezzeret to Mirrodin for a reason and so far none has presented itself. He didn’t do anything that would have turned the tide of battle on New Phyrexia. He couldn’t have been there just to harvest Karn’s spark, or he would have just taken Venser’s when Venser offered to sacrifice himself. It makes the most sense that he was there learn how Memnarch built a machine that was capable of transferring a spark.
Bolas’s entire arc is him pulling the strings to regain his lost power. He knows that sparks are capable of being transferred from one vessel to another, the spy Tezzeret met on Mirrodin had probably been reporting on Memnarch long before the Green Sun ruptured, so Bolas knew what Memnarch was doing.
Everything that has transpired seems to point to Bolas attempting to do what Memnarch failed at and on a much larger scale.
I also dont see the Gatewatch stopping him. My money is on Tezzeret betraying him and blowing the whole thing to hell with Bolas in it.
It could be that Bolas picked Ravnica for revenge. He was depicted as petty and jealous in the Core 2019 story, so maybe it's happening on Ravnica because he wants to destroy something Azor built for his part in trying to trap Bolas.
Also, I expect this to end with Bolas trapped alone on the Meditation Plane with the Immortal Sun, probably after killing a few planeswalkers and trying to kill Tezzeret too. Because everyone would be expendable with that plan.
I wouldn't be surprised if the immortal sun was destroyed and Azor gained his spark back. Especially given assassin's trophy. It would be an okay tie up, and give the good side some much needed firepower if they can restore Azor.
I do agree with the memnarch thing though, good call and it makes a bunch of sense. Hopefully we get some bolas centered stories which wrap up a bunch of these loose ends considering how long his story arch has been.
I really can't wait until the stories are "because it's part of Bolas's plan". *****, even Dominaria wound up being about how Lili was there to kill her demons only to find out that that was also part of Bolas's plan and to bring back some fan favorite walkers like Teferi and Karn only to get them involved in the Gatewatch. Remember when precisely zero of the set walkers had anything to do with Lorwyn/Shadowmoor? Or Onslaught? Or Mirrodin?
Even the New Phyrexia block had so little to do with the planeswalkers being there, I think that's why the book was so terrible to begin with. They had to make up a relationship with Venser & Karn to get Venser to sacrifice himself for Karn's sake.
You know what would have been a waaaaay better story?
None of that.
The entire story could have been told without Elspeth and Venser showing up and the book could have had you rooting for Koth to win as a Vulshok, not a planeswalker. Along the way he meets Melira& Thrun and together they strikes out at the throne room. Melira is not able to purge the core of the plane but does free Karn from his prison.
Karn retained his spark, or one of the many latent sparks that inhabit his body since there has always been some dubiousness about Urza, Glacian, and Gerrard all having latent sparks of their own that Karn seemed to absorb along with the legacy weapon and all of the souls from Serra's realm. Freed from corruption Karn and Koth wage war on Phyrexia but rapidly realize they are losing. They set up the same plan to put a spellbomb at the center of power and it still fails. Koth convince Karn to save Melira and detonates the bomb, igniting his spark in the process.
No extraplanar threat, no "We need a gang of planeswalkers for every problem". You get Karn freed up to return to New Phyrexia and the other contaminated planes, you get your new walker with an actual fleshed out arc about his ascension.
We don't need everything to feel like Infinity War to get a good story.
