Yesterday, I had an opponent with a Galloping Lizrog while I had a Blightbeetle in play. Both my opponent and I had a sufficient number of other creatures in play but they are irrelevant.
Interestingly, when my opponent attacked several times with Lizrog, I blocked with my Beetle expecting to offset at least some of the trample damage but I recieved none.
I checked CR 702.19 for changed but none matter.
Clearly I'm missing something.
Dies Arena allow you to assign all trample damage to a single blocking creature as an option?
If you have the right settings set, you are able to assign damage manually. And assigning all the damage to a single blocker, even when trample is involved, is perfectly legal. You don't have to assign damage to the player if you don't want. So, perhaps Arena's auto-assign damage feature is bugged or the player didn't really understand what was happening and assigned damage oddly, but the end result is something that *could* happen according to the rules. Even though normally you would likely take damage in that case since, as you seem to understand, Protection doesn't actually change the way Trample works.
