They fight spirits that manifest in the mortal world, by casting spells. Ogres give them trouble and there are talking rats and rabbits.
I think one female samurai will get past my suspension of disbelieve this once...
Are you trying to say there weren't anthropomorphic rats and rabbits in ancient Japan?
That seems pretty hard to believe.
EDIT - I do admit that it's not historically accurate and doesn't even look Asian, but I like the picture anyway. I think it fits the flavor of the card quite well.

I have a flavor problem with this card.
I mean, that picture is clearly that of a woman samurai. And while i don't mind woman wizards and such in this flavor-driven set, as such tings don't really hve historical background, a woman samurai is very inaccurate.
Which is exactly why it's in flavor. The opposing force is supposed to go "WTF, they sent a woman to fight us?!?!?! That's not honorable. We shall put a stop to this mockery!"
I'm not being sexist. But when WOTC says they will use the historical background of Japan, i expect them not to do some goofs that are obvious. (Its very similar to knights in the middle ages, and magic has little, if any female knights)
Hmm, this seems like a very well thought up card. It is good on both defense, and is hard to kill, at least combatwise, on offense. If it were 3 mana, it would be constructed worthy. Cant expect every card to be the best it can be though.

This set is based on japanese legends and if I remember correctly there is a legend about a woman samurai.
As for the card it self it is good in multiplayer but can be detroyed too easily
(glacial ray etc) out side of combat.
I will be getting at least 1 of these, even if it's only for the art. She's like a elves of deep shadow (best elf ever, and best card art) with a bit of an anger management problem.
Does someone want to put up some sort of other link to the card or tell me what it does.
Sure thing - Fumiko the Lowblood :2mana::symr::symr:

Thanks for the woman-as-samurai information, p.viola!

Thanks p.viola for finding the info, I was also going to say if you had ever read Shogun there are female samurai in that - while maybe not historically accurate (I think james Clavell does do a lot of reasearch for this books, so I would assume that it could be possible)
Samurai as I understand it was a class in society - no reason why woman couldnt be in that class
Also, she is red, making her a non-conformist to start with, and low-blood refers to those not of nobility. It would be like the movie Carrie, the outsider who finally flips out and cuts off some heads.
Has anyone besides me noticed the synergy with Soulblast? Block with a whole bunch of red samurai (including this REALLY big one), let the bushido resolve, then send them all flying at your opponent's dome. Not really Tier1, but I really like Soulblast and absolutely LOVE doming my opponents with it.

I have one question- Why the hell is this card eating up a rare slot in my booster box?
I CAN'T WAIT TO PULL A FOIL HERO'S DEMISE ALONG WITH THIS AND A NON-FOIL HERO'S DEMISE IN MY BOX OF BOK!
Did I mention I don't like this card?
there were definitely women samurai. The naginita, a spear-like weapon used by some samurai, translates as "woman's spear" because it was used by women samurai a lot apparently.
Exciting, more useless bushido junk. Bleh. This will sooo not see play, at least as long as Mirrodin is still in Standard. Then again, this might not be too bad in limited.

They don't make everycard for use in Constructed decks.. This is pretty powerful in limited if only for the force creatures to attack ability.
