Ooh, they essentially reprinted Raze. Well if you play it first turn that is. Anyways, I like the overall simplicity of the card. While it's no innocent blood it's not a bad card. It's probably not the most playable thing in the world though...
If I were to splice a Consuming Vortex onto this, would I return the creature I decide to sacrifice to my hand, or does the stacking order of the effects make that impossible?
No, this doesn't work. The Vortex would be countered. BUT, for less cost, you could play this, then in response Consume Vortex your own guy. Not a great advantage, but certainly painful for the other guy. [Edit: hmm, maybe not. There is no target, so when Earth resolves, you still have to sacrifice something. bummer]
But, unlike the others, I think this is a good limited card. Although most of the time it will only kill a land, red has ways of making even that painful.

Splicing vortex changes Crack to read
"Each player sacrifices a permanent.
Return target creature to it's owner's hand."
This new "spliced" version is what is placed on the stack, so you would have already chosen the target for the vortex portion. The spell would then resolve, causing you to sac, then return the target creature, if it's still there.
now here's a common i can get behind.
not sure of its type 2 implications, though i suppose it'd be alright in the right deck. but it's certainly something i wouldn't mind getting passed to me like 9 - 12th pick in draft.
On turn one (or turn two if your on the play) this could be great along side a one drop. In fact this is the main basis for the powerful deck in extended Red Deck Wins. However, nothing like that exists in standard and I believe Port and Wasteland are better than this because they are lands.
might use it with something earthlink-esque (or like the burning sands.. hope they made something like that in bok)

Uhh, sorry. I actually love but I was hoping to something like this in black not red. There goes another black pieslice to red. (I did never whine about a colorshifting before, I think it's allowed to everyone once in his life)
Misguided Rage already changed the color pie. This is just continues the shift. Black still gets sacrifice effects, but they only target creatures: Barter in Blood
Wow this is pretty good!! It will take some time to figure out just how to use it right, but once it finds a deck to work its way into, it will surprise many n00bs with its power im sure.

I think for this to be good, it will probably have to be played in a Splice/Spirtcraft deck where it will generate significant virtual card advantage. This may fit right in to the growing G/R Spiritcraft deck (i.e. Southside and Friends).
I love this card. I have been playing sligh since States, and this makes it much more powerful. I don't really need excess lands, and being able to destroy an opponent's land that early is quite powerful.
Turn 1: mountain, frostling
Turn 2: mountain, attack with frostling, crack the earth
It stalls during those first few turns while allowing you to beat with your one drops. It also penalizes opponents who keep a land light hand, while you can easily play most cards with a mere 2 lands.

I needed something like this for my Black/Red Toshi thing im working on. Im sure 90% of the time this will hit a land, but I need to put pressure on players...
Now here is something intresting... R_E I greatly admire your skills and honor your sorces, but so far (from today) this i the only non-boring card I've seen. (those Orges put me to sleep to, but not before me crying of bordom) It's like an Innocent Blood for Red (that's better and arcane0 this is DAMN sexy!

Well, just like half of the stuff in this block, it's a crappier reprint of something but with Arcane on it. That said, it's alright because it's cheap. Agreed, it's seems more black to me. Ah well, thanks RE.

Don't shoot the messenger!
Raze was not played in its day and age, because red has 9999 better plays on the first turn, ESPECIALLY when going second. If I were playing Red, going first, and drew this as my only 1-cc in my opening hand, I would curl it up into a fine tube, and put my eyes out with it.
Misguided Rage was not played in its block, and was dubbed "Stoner's Edict" because it was a slow and opponent-friendly Stone Rain.
This card's only redeeming powers are a) it's arcane b) you won't open it as your rare and c) your opponent must sacrifice his Seat of the Synod before Aether Vial gets a counter, so he can't sneak a Vault Ninja into play and make you suffer for making him sacrifice that land.
This card's actually not terrible. If you can find a way like MoM to take out all of a player's lands this then becomes an innocent blood (or takes out their non-artifact lands). It might be interesting to use with Uyo, as you could return a buttload of lands to make your opponent sac the board and only really lose the uyo. If you can float a few mana in the process (maybe you had a heartbeat of spring in play for example) you could then drop azusa and recover some of the lands back from hand to play.

I could see this in a couple of fun decks in the future, nothing worthy though, unless more things come together.
I like the LD/control flavour aspect. Reminds a lot of innocent blood, obviously the card it was modeled after, among other numerous color mechanics for 1 mana.
Tempo advantage in a t2 RG type deck, possibly with land fetchers/token makers once mirr rotates out.
As noted, when you can play this on T2 after playing two 1-drop threats and this, you've wiped out their land (most likely) while maintaining a lot of pressure. A lot of times, destroying a land of theirs early spells doom, especially for people who don't know how to mulligan properly.
Going second, well, this card tends to suck ass. That's a shame, but there ya go. It is card disadvantage, but it is often tempo advantage in a big, big way.
Why is everyone so excited about the card? This is pure card-disadvantage. You won't gain a lot of tempo or pressure with it either, because you have to sac either a creature or land yourself.
I can't think of a situation in which this card is really good.
Because Crack the Earth has the potential to give you fantastic board position over your opponent. Several other members have already listed great 1st/2nd turn plays that are possible with this.

Arcane, cheap and can remove various ugly items. I love it!
Also for casual if you had a red artifact deck that ran ornithopter or welding jars it might be worth running.
