If you could manage to get this dude in a BUr deck, with magma jet, terror, barter in blood, glacial ray, echoing truth, unsummon, reach through mists, consuming vortex .. once you have control, there's no stopping you.
Maybe even just a B/U deck with Toshiro, unsummon, truth, reach, consuming vortex, dampen thought (omg), soulless revival .. my god guys, I think we've found our splice deck. Barter in Blood, grave pact (maybe), devour in shadow maybe.
Put things in the graveyard, bounce things to hand with free cards, splice onto free cards for more free cards.
Think it could work?

Surprisingly i'm not impressed with it. The ability seems to need an awful lot to be truly useful. Although i guess the ability is never a disadvantage.
Well, you can't really say his power wasn't tied to things dying, since he used blood to scribe his kanji most of the time... of course, the blood didn't have to come from a dying creature, more often than not it came from himself... but he did use the blood of dying creatures on several occasions.
Actually, several of his kanji were not in blood (the one in the roof of his hut, the razor bird things he used at the end), and the ones that were often came from his own blood (the one that turned blade strokes on their wielders, fade). But ALL of them were Kami powered.
Wow this is good! In cloud this could be really good. Definity it will have a splash on BLock and problay T2 also but my question to you all is will it be good in Extended?
Wow, thank god. Something really powerful for MBC. I love the deck and it seems the Kamigawa block is showering it with gifts. This guy is Insane. Toshi+Hirobi would be a very cool combo since every kill card like Rend flesh essentialy kills 2 creatures. Although they would be vurnurable we have said it abiut Hirobi and everyone still uses him. Toshi is going to be my new best freind.:smile01:
This card definitely has the potential to be broken, but I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have on the current environment. I think I agree with the fact that b/r or bur are probably the 2 best decks to fit this guy in though.
That sentence is there to address the issue of Buyback. Use Buyback, the instant goes to your hand, not the yard.
Also, this is there to prevent unlimited recursion with Horobi. If the spell is countered, even by STE, it will still be removed from game. You can only recur a spell once unless it Buybacks, Beacons, or Pulses.
pretty happy with the card. i really liked toshi, so i'll be anxious to make a toshi deck (maybe black / green, i'll call it toshi salad)... the set is really looking good to me at this point. i'm very bummed that i have to miss this prerelease...
with some blue card drawing and discarding instants (thirst for knowledge) this guy can give a lot of card advantage. End any destroy efect with draw three cards and discard 2 (or one) is quite nice.

I need the faq to know what this really does, but so far I'm unimpressed. Kamigawa is filled with elim for this sort of creature. Too weak in my opinion. Would have been better as a 2/3 or 3/3.
Toshi will get crazy in multiplayer, with several players killing eachother and triggering Toshi
and about buyback...didn't they rule on this with the Unhinged card Blast from the Past? I seem to recall Rosewater saying Flahback and buyback didn't work together, but this isn't worded quite the same way, so Je ne sais pas!

Toshi, Cheap Burn, and Repercussion is brutality, heh. One Shock=kill a 2-toughness creature and deal 4 damage to the opponent for 2 mana.
Hes not quite as powerful in T2/block, but he could be a true monster in Extended/Legacy. He's hot

that's not what happened at all. kamahl stabbed phage, akroma, and some old lady and they became korona. then korona got stabbed by her "prophets" and kamahl got drunk with a mutant centaur

One obvious candidate for synergy purposes is Desire, but Desire likes to goldfish when it goes off, not worry about the opponent having dudes in play.
For color purposes, Toshi seems to fit best into Rock, where he might be an extremely good sideboard option against Affinity, Goblins, and Madness; he turns whatever solid removal (Rend Flesh, Diabolic Edict, Oxidize, etc.) into 2-fers, which is extremely useful some of the time, but not currently against enough decks to really be mainboard. Still an interesting potential Living Wish target, if you're running removal or they kill off their own guys (Fanatic, Frostling?, all affinity stuff). I'd say there's only about a 33% chance Toshi will really find a home in extended.
More likely he will fit into Standard, where black will gain yet another card to let them 2-for-1 a lot. Chittering Rats, Ravenous Rats (playable maybe?), Lose Hope (scry 2 is kinda like draw 1), Solemn, Echoing Decay...lots of potential card advantage for black. I especially like Toshi's potential in rock-ish Type II decks with or without Death Cloud. If you're running some Oxidize, Tel-Jilad Justice, Naturalize, Lose Hope, Echoing Decay, Rend Flesh...having all these have 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 flashback potential is just amazing.
Toshi is nifty. Kinda like Glissa. He's tournament-level-ish and has an ability that is unique to himself.
Quick question on "...Play target instant card in your graveyard." Do you have to pay the mana cost?
The reason I ask is I see alot of people saying free instant, but when wizards makes a spell free the ussually let you know by saying "...without paying its mana cost"
one rules question here: it says you may play instant cards in your graveyard, as I understand it "playing" a card means paying its mana cost/alternate cost and then putting it on the stack. So a removal spell would only be two for one if you the mana. Right?
I really am not all that impressed with the card. You can only play instants, their isn't enough powerfull instants in T2 for it to be overpowering. Yes you can reuse your removal which is one of the pluses of the card. Besides that all the game altering cards are either creatures or sorceries.
I doubt that I will be playing him in MBC where the only spells I can use with him are Echoing Decay or Rend Flesh. MBC doesn't run enough creatures, so Barter in Blood and Death Cloud will probably kill him along with your opponents creatures.
They made Eternal Witness back in Fifth Dawn and they didn't weaken the Regrowth effect that the Witness has. I really think that they weakened the Yawgmoth's Will effect on the card to much. Granted they couldn't do a funtional reprint of Will but I believe they could have given it a little more IMO.
I know I sound like one of those magic players that just want the most broken cards to play with. I just think that they probably could have made it instants and sorceries, maybe not with Consume Spirit and such cards but it would have been nice.
