You would be able to play instants everytime they sacked a creature but it probably would be to late by then, and you wouldn't have alot of mana to play spells. What instant would help you to stay alive against affinity, besides Time Stop anyways?
if he wouldve allowed spells for free he would have been like a spellweaver on steriods... too abusable since a single creature dying could trigger a monumental instant
In the way that Yawgmoth's(sp) Will is a ravager hoser?
I got a question. If I used that instant 2 mana reanimate card with a glacial ray spliced into it, and the reanimate target is Toshiro would the creature the glacial ray destroy allow me to replay the arcane reanimate?

I believe so, since it would put toshi into play, do the glacial, resolve and go to the graveyard, SBE's are checked and the creature dies, reanimator is ready to be targeted by toshi's ability
Very nice, and a very huge taret as well in the right deck. This card has potential written all over it. So good with targeted removal, especially instants that target more than one creature for death. I like it and hope to get my hands on four soon.
Spock is not portrayed correctly. If Vulcans are above petty emotions, what motivates him to join the most elite starship crew in the galaxy? I, on the other hand, have transcended the weakness of emotion and achieved a blissful lack of caring. Apathy is my strength, our strength, which prevents us from being all-to-human. In this spirit, may Meh be with you, always.

Nice, go go crazy reanimating with the splicing and the attacking.
i got a question, will an echoing decay destroy multiple tokens from the orchard in one shot? i wasn't sure if their "names" are the same or whatever. i mean if it does, have fun digging for as many instants as you can want for 2 mana.

Yeah they have a single name so they would all be killed. The is why blue echo bounces a bunch of tokens of any kind.
The first thing I thought when I saw this card is that it's going to be a decent Affinity hoser in B/G Control. Affinity will NOT sac a creature to Ravager as long as Toshi is out and you have Oxidize in the graveyard, until they have enough power to kill you. And when you're running Echoing Decay, Oxidize, Naturalize, Viridian Shaman, and Eternal Witness, that'll buy you plenty of time to take control of the game. (some of the aforementioned cards may come out of SB obv.)
Combo-wise...Toshi + Orchard + NoSB + Intruder Alarm + Living Terrain/Rude Awakening = infinite mana and burn recursion! woo!
I love it: 3cc or cheaper playable legends with good abilities are few and far between, the last legend of this calibre(despite champions being a legend heavy set) was lin sivvi way back when. He couldn't be this cheap and be any bigger(especially with bushido) without being totally broken.
the instant only clause is fair enough(after all who'd be stupid enough to believe wizards would make anything near a functional reprint of yawgmoths will(arguably the best card ever)) after all there is a heap of good instants even in mono black type 2 to use with it; terror, echoing decay, rend flesh, dark banishing, the new 2cc legend killer, the new 2cc reanimator, devour in shadow, etc. and that's just in black.
As for the idea that Toshi isnt a samurai i'll quote directly from the blurb on the first page of "Outlaw: Champions of Kamigawa" where is says: "Scott McGough begins an epic story of a ronin and a princess and the strange alliance they must make to discover the truth behind the kami's war." For those people who don't know a RONIN is a type of samurai. Toshi in the book uses samurai weapons and at one point flys on a samurai's moth why the heck wouldn't he be a samurai.
Personally i think the best use for toshi is in a red/black deck with lots of red burn for the simple reason you can kill a creature with a instant burn spell then flash it back with toshi's ability to do extra damage to your opponents head something like: turn 1, mountain, go turn 2, swamp, chrome mox a echoing decay, toshi, go turn 3, mountain, magma jet a creature, scry, toshi recur magma jet the player, scry, toshi beats, go. 1 creature dead, 4 damage to the head and massive card quality because of the scry 4 all on turn 3(turn 4 without the mox). It's quick its good and its massive card advantage if used correctly.
Its really cool. Too bad there really isnt any serious way to use it in the current set. It seems sligtly weak

It would be funny to play a Time stop or Gifts Ungiven with him. But overall I'm still not all that impressed.
[hint]
well after knowing that you REMOVE time stop after it resolves, it would make toshi more unimpressive for you i think...

unless you discard the timestop (dampen thought yourself)...
to play timestop from graveyard... t3ch....

Haha, i was kind of hoping he would be more of a combat BEAST, like maybe an extra power and first strike, but hey if you can find a way to abuse his ability it shouldnt really matter now should it.
I think the best way to use him would be with black mana. Cause you could play him and another creature, and beat your opponent, and when they played a blocker you could kill it, and reuse the destruction. I dont no why people think he is only good if you give your opponent creatures, he makes it pretty hard for them to keep much on the table anyway, so you should just smash face.
Ah well, I guess we should all have a little fun trying to break him anyway.

Toshi fits very nicely into BR decks, as repeatable burn will be very nice.
BU is more questionable (you need a lot of mana to recur counterspells.....)

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
What came to my attention was the fact that the card is only removed if it is put back into your graveyard. So if you've lost a beacon or pulse, you can cast it with his ability and get it back into the game. Or you can purposely lose the beacon/pulse by using something like mesmeric orb.

At first, I thought this card was pretty beastly, but the more I've looked at it as I've read through this massive thread, I've become unimpressed.
Think about it - Toshi here really belongs in an aggressive or control based deck. Well, if that's the case, you really don't want your opponent to build up resources, especially not creature resources. Given that, you probably are going to try to keep them to 1 or 0 (preferrably 0) critters as often as possible. So, since you've killing their only critter on the board, the card you choose to flashback better be able to target something other than critters (opponent, land, enchantments, etc).
Worst of all, this card is really going to punish bad players. Sure, you've got Toshi down, are getting hit to the face by a 3/x, and have a rend flesh in your hand that can kill the assailant - BUT, if you wait until they have a second critter AND you've got six mana, then you get to take out BOTH creatures! How cool is that! Of course, in the meantime, you've probably taken like 6-12 damage, but hey - it's worth it to show how leet you are and to get mad card advantage.
1st turn, Forbidden Orchard, dark ritual, toshi, mox ruby, lightning bolt spirit, mox jet, replay dark ritual, Play Necropotence. Load up on cards, discard good amount of instants to the grave.
Yes I know its idealistic, but itd be cool.
Very cool.

With Necropotence the cards get removed from the game when you discard a card from your hand. Like it was said above not enough creatures in T1 for him to be used.
