It looks like there will be a Fat Pack for Ninth Edition. A couple days ago, on the WotC boards, seton krosan protector888 posted a thread saying that there would be one. Now there's a preorder avalible on starcitygames.com (Linkage)
It contains:
• 6 9th Edition Core Set booster packs
• a 40-card land pack
• 2 collectible card boxes
• six plastic dividers
• a "spindown" life-counter
• a player's guide
• oversized promotional card
some bits of plastic, paper, and cardboard to be lost or thrown away
No, seriously, I guess it's not that bad. I guess they're throwing in "plastic dividers" and other junk, to make up for there not being a book. It's not really a fatpack, IMO... it's more like 2 starters. Still, for $25, it's not bad, especially if you can pick it up at a store for that price (not pay nasty shipping charges... those things tend to be bulky). Overall, pretty much a silly marketing ploy. I'll be buying 9th, but not by the "fatpack". I'll buy it by the case of booster boxes.
That sounds pretty cool. There's basically a sealed tournament right there without needing extra lands or anything. I don't usually buy fat packs, but the extras they included in place of the novel are probably cool enough to get my purchase.

Every time I destroy an opponent's creature, I jump on the table, yell "Boo ya, you son of a *****!", rip the card in half, urinate on it, then forcefully shove it down my opponent's throat.
Needless to say, I don't have many players in my playgroup anymore.
I'll buy the fatpack for the one singular reason I buy all the other fatpacks: THE PLAYERS GUIDE.
I have always found this to be a very useful resource when deckbuilding, organizing sets, or when I've simply wanted to have a quick look at the set as a whole.
i agree with legendary antelope, i'd buy a core set "fat pack" almost entirely for the players guide having a pictorial alphabetised guide to the base set would be extremely useful because since i've got most of the cards in the base sets from other expansions i rarely buy any and can never quite remember whats in it apart from the obvious high end rares and uncommons.
This is a great idea. I've always been really irritated that the base set stopped having tournament packs after 6th; this is one better. This has pretty much everything a new player needs to start playing if they find the theme decks have little appeal to them. It's also a great supplement TO the theme decks.
I know there isn't a whole lot here for us existing players, but for the new meat, this is awesome and I really wish something like it had existed when I was bringing in new people.

yes a spindown life counter is whats in all the expansion fat packs. a D20 with the set logo on it. its called a spindown life counter because its ordered so that you can flip it from 20 to 19 to 18 etc. etc. as opposed to a random D20 where the numbering is all over the place. basically its better for keeping life totals but not so good at ensuring randomisation for dice rolls.

Anyways, I wonder, will they do the land packs in future "big" sets? I think it'd be a nice idea... I only ever do Sealed Decks for the lands in the first week anyways...
this seems pretty kool a fatpack would be a great gift for someone getting into magic or something to start a new player with. 6 packs and a larg promo card can't go wrong with that.
Spindowns are illegal for any form of D20 play ... for obvious reasons.
I still think I'd rather get a box than one of these and boosters here and there. I suppose it really depends on how many cards from the base set I need and don't already have. Time will tell, time will tell.
I look forward to the last single digit core edition!
It just got me thinking of buying one. I don't usually buy Core Set because there are a lot of useless commons but the other goodies in the fat pack should offset the disadvantages.
What's the divider for?

.
You forgot the 40 white bordered land to use for drafting because you don't want people taking your pretty land.

and why would there be a book based on a core set?

That's what a spindown life counter is.

Well the thread starter heard the same thing:
