Well, Eighth Edition's logo was the Core Set, not the 8 on top of cards, so at least it's sorta different.

True, but they might also change it for 9th to stick with that format. I dont think they can print the card back at minisize. Much less 3 cardbacks and a 9 at minisize.
Edit: I wanted to say this: It sucks to have the same (almost) icon used again. I loved 8th, but that doesnt mean all cores should have the same format. They should go for originality.
Edit2: I forgot to say thanks to silicon

I think assaulting another player should have a range of penalties. (A light slap is a game loss, a kick in the nuts is a DQ, ghetto-stomping someone is a Ban for Life.) There could be article all about it, like "when to mulligan"
rod of ruin... not a real surprise. it goes in the stack of cards that (outside limited) never really get used... i always get my hopes up for core sets...i always want to see some real shake-ups, and then i see pretty much the same cards over and over again... or functional reprints of those same cards...
oh well... i'll still end up buying it. i'll still end up drafting it. i'll end up loving it.
This adds valitdity to the former card that RE had withthe card and the 9.

Sigh.... Rod of Ruin may be iconic... but it's still strictly worse than Granite Shard... and THAT didn't see significant play outside of limited.
I guess we get to see if they're putting equipment in 9th... that's got potential for goodness (even if only 2-4 pieces).
As for Rod of Ruin.. expect to see it in EVERY core set until the end of Magic... which I think will never come. I'll be 80 yo and there will still be new magic.
I'm really dissapointed that the symbol's gonna be so similar to that for 8th (if that's what the images end up meaning). The 8th symbol was great, but even one repeat bodes badly for future core-set originality.
Nice find, i personally don't care what the core sets symbol looks like(mainly because since i've already got playsets of the good cards from the original sets i never buy the core set). As for Rod of Ruin i'm not really suprised, after all its been in the core set for ages.
While I am not expecting much, if anything, special out of the 9th edition expansion symbol, I don't think that the image we have is necessarily going to be it.
Like others have said, it may just be the logo.
Comparing 6th, 7th, 8th symbols, none look alike.
On a quick view, IF that 9 was the symbol, it would look too alike.
I can see a pretty 9 being the symbol, a la 7th.

Some things I will never understand, like Rod of Ruin. It was crap even in the prehistory of Magic, before people knew how to value cards (i.e. that a Black Lotus was better than a Nightmare), and it has only gotten worse as the game has evolved. Even new players know that it's bad. Unplayable cards have been printed that are better than Rod of Ruin.
I guess there has to be a rock bottom in any game. At least it's not Wood Elemental.
I kinda like the symbol bieng the same it is kinda like when they didn;t have expansion symbols for the base sets. but like many i hate to see rod of ruin return because for some reason i end up with one every pack i open

But I agree that I think it's the logo and not the symbol. The gold-on-silver leads me to that belief...I don't think it would look very good with gold-on-gold or silver-on-silver for rares and uncommons...
Random image to further say against the logo being the symbol:
Ok now I have to agree that the symbol is not the symbol but the logo. If seventh had the same type of logo yet it was not the expansion symbol I have to agree that the same will be true for 9th. Thanks Erad, I forgot all about 7th
The 7 across the silver cards is the expansion logo for 7th Edition. I think it's safe to say that 9th will just be the 9, perhaps?

Not really surprising though.
Also on the arcana page, while I couldn't find the concept sketches, I did find this:
Seems like the symbol will be a lot like 8th's (if not the same except for the number)
Edit: okay, I didn't realize 7th had the same sort of logo... so I guess it doesn't tell us about the symbol at all :slant:

This is great news for a set still far away.

... well... that's assuming I make it to 80 yo.

Maybe the set symbol is pretty much the same as the last one, but the set itself is much different and really broken? We can hope anyway!
