I'd love for the Slith to make it to 9th. Makes a nice line-up with Rathi Dragon and Shard Phoenix being reprited. C'mon Seething Song and make it to 9th!!!
Actually the majority of time the rarities are switched around in the Core Sets is because of the purpose of fitting more in. I remember them specifically saying they made some of the rares in 8th that were originally uncommon rare, and made some commons uncommon, so they could fit as much of a variety in as possible.
I hope they don't turn the Slith rare... Because that would be complete and utter crap. I hate how they made noble purpose, story circle, coastal piracy and urza's armor (those are what i can think of off the top of my head) rare... it's so silly. I know they want to diversify, but jeez... They aren't REALLY good uncommons that need to be bumped...
I hope they make Slith common, THAT would be cool.
Slith Firewalker in 9th? Seems a bit too good to be true, not to mention how recent Slith Firewalker is. I'm going to remain doubtful about this...4/10 on the probability meter.
Enrage, a Scourge card, was in 8th Edition. Scourge was the last expansion before 8th Edition came out. According to that, cards in Saviors of Kamigawa are fair game in 9th Edition. Why wouldn't cards in Mirrodin?
8th Edition may have been a special case. Because it was released to commemorate Magic's 10th Anniversary, they deliberately included at least one card from every set ever printed - including the Portal sets and the book promo cards (at one point they even meant to put an Unglued card in). There's no saying they'll do it again.
I doubt it, either. They had a hard time choosing cards in many sets, especially the older ones, where most cards are either on the reserved list or have been reprinted at least once. And those that aren't are either too complicated, uses mechanics that are obsolete or just not in the flavour of a particular colour.
It'll be interesting what they'll do for their 20th anniversary.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
To be fair, Elvish Champion from Invasion was printed in 7th Edition, with only Planeshift between printings. As such I recall them saying a while back that any card printed before the base set was fair game. So I don't see how it's impossible for a card with six (seven counting Unhinged but eh) sets between printings to appear.
While I would love to see it come back (I'm always glad to see playable cards in the Core Set), I hope it is not accompanied by its cycle bretheren. Avatar of Hope and Plague/Searing Winds appeared without the rest of their cycle so it is possible, but I really don't want an uncommon slot in each rarity clogged with the likes of Slith Strider and Slith Ascendant. This could also happenw ith Magnivore, though I would much rather have the other 4 Lhurgoyfs back then the other Sliths.
Here's to hoping we get Slith Firewalker and Slith FIrewalker only

We will definitely see some cards from Mirrodin and even the Kamigawa Block make it into Ninth edition. Back on August 26 2004 there was an Ask Wizards question on magicthegathering.com:
Q: "What is the latest printed expansion that can still make it into Ninth Edition?"

A: From Aaron Forsythe, Magic R&D:
"There is no hard-and-fast rule about what sets can and cannot be included, but it should be obvious from the past that we like to use every resource available to us. Seventh Edition contained cards from Invasion, which was released just a few months prior. Eighth Edition had cards from Scourge, the latest expasion at the time. Suffice it to say that there will be cards in Ninth Edition that you haven't seen yet."
The fact Aaron Forsythe said that "there will be cards in Ninth Edition that you haven't seen yet" prior to Champions of Kamigawa being released proves that there will be Kamigawa Block cards included.
A source which asked to remain anonymous (and which I can't verify) emailed me to let me know Slith Firewalker will appear in 9th edition. To me, it seems a bit like wishful thinking, since it has become quite a popular card in Type 2 red decks, and reprinting it in 9th would keep it in Type 2 for another couple years. But there's really nothing about the card that doesn't fit with the core set, so I guess it's possible.

I thought that it was that Goblin Cohort is a F.I.R., like they did with fugitive wizard and Thought courior... There's enough decent stuff in CBS(oK) thus far that anyone could see in 9th...

For the first and last time...
It. Will. Be. Rare.
They tend to generally avoid +1/+1 counters in base sets these days, the exception being the rare Fungusaur. Some horrible uncommons from Masques block became rares in 8th, so why wouldn't a good uncommon from Mirrodin block become rare in 9th?
