In terms of a card mechanic, it sounds like it could be War Elemental-esque, but whenever a creature dies instead of it hitting a player. Definitely red.
Good story, but I wish they proofread better though. Editors are tech.
BTW, kataki literally means 'revenge'. More, though, it has the connotation of a just revenge, to me, somehow. As opposed to fukusyu, which is more typical.
Maybe a better translation for kataki would be retribution.
As far as the color wheel is concerned, Kataki is almost certainly white, black, or both.
White has justice as one of its concepts. OTOH, the mechanic that would make the most sense with Kataki would be that of Grave Pact, I think. He might be something like:
2WW
3/4
Legendary Spirit
When Kataki goes to the graveyard from play, target an opponent. That opponent sacrifices a creature he controls, and puts Kataki into play under his control.
The story is pretty cool, although it makes it seem like Kataki is more likely to be (or rather, should be) an enchantment of some kind, if the ability in the story reflects the card.
If Kataki means 'revenge,' then that would make this very unlikely to be green or blue. Red is not likely, I don't think, but is an outside possibility. Vengeance seems to be portrayed as black or white these days, although I'm not certain how Vengeance translates onto a single card... hmmmm.

Yeah, Yodafan's pretty much a EDH pro.

Pretty cool story. Kataki, War's Wage sounds good to me! He obviously doesn't deal damage outside of combat since its name only appears once in the Orb. The story leaves a lot of mechanic possibities. Funny that Retribution was in one of the MTG.com articles today.

He'd be something of a creature Kudzu.
You may be on to something, AAs article discusses 'revenge' and uses the card retribution as a reference......maybe....
2WW
3/4
Legendary Spirit
Whenever a creature you control is put into a graveyard from play by a creatre that dealt damage to it, destroy that creature.
I dunno, clearly worse than Grave Pact I guess.....but you see where I'm going?

The card is definetly White, WocT put Legendary Creatures stories in the order of the color pie!
Um.....Betrayers story order goes BRGWU, which kinda goes with what your saying, but also shows that it could start with anything. And Champions started RW.....there is no pattern.

I think that because the third thumbnail, shows to us the Great Black Kirin, the next one seems pretty red to me and the last one is obviously green. So that is my feeling.
Of course i could be wrong, but i think that today is not that case scenario.:smile2:
I found "denied" in the orb a couple hours ago, it certainly seems to fit with this guy. But I couldn't get revenge or vengeance or their ilk to come up. Just a thought for another potential card name out of this one.

They have given us a clue about the card in its description:
“Kataki’s appearance is mild and weak at first, but if you fail to drive him away fully, he grows greater, much as a warrior’s dedication grows greater over the course of the battle. He is war’s vengeance, the spirit of retribution incarnate. It would be folly for us to oppose him.”
I'm thinking something that starts small and grows. Perhaps:
Kataki, spirit of vengeance
RR1
Legnedary creature - Warrior Spirit
Whenever Kataki attacks or blocks, you may put a +1/+1 counter on it.
2/2
Kill it when it's small or it's quickly kill you.

I'm old school, about as OLD school as they get. think 4th Edition/Ice Age old school. Unfortunatley in the "Real world" you cant Incinerate your bank manager and sadly now I have joined the ranks of the older population, and my time is taken up by things like reasearching Mortgage Refinance Rates and where to get the best possible mortgage quotes. I have however discovered the joys of Online Forex Trading which at least allows me to keep the bills in check!

Wage: 1
The card won't reference itself in its text.
If they do go in the pattern BRGWU, then Kataki would be Black, which isn't hard to see at all.
No, the point people were trying to make is that there is no pattern between sets. Betrayers may have gone one way, but that doesn't mean Saviors will.

Reading from the story, the spirit perhaps has a No Mercy kind of effect, that works "You harm me, I harm you" deal to it. Perhaps it has an ability similar to Reciprocate to it or Retaliate that works universally.
I will be greatly surprised if Kataki is red. There is nothing in the story or the art to suggest that.
Vengeance has at times been in flavor for both red and white. White tends to get the more 'justice'-y flavors while red gets the reckless versions.
Kataki means retribution, which implies justified vengeance, but the story implied that the kami has gone quite mad, which may mean the vengeance is emotional and irrational.
The card is probably white, but I can see how some may think it could be red.
ETA: Pump wouldn't work, either, Heidrek. It would be worded "R: Kataki, War's Wage gets +1/+1 until end of turn", which we know the card can't because of the Orb.
Um, I could point out that Konda has gone quite mad, too, to think that he could gain immortality by capturing a spirit. He's also quite White.
If the story followed the mechanic, there is a much greater White or Black feel to Kataki than Red.
Of course, it's possible that Kataki is a flip card, though how that would work with the artwork, I'm not sure.
The reciprocal nature of Kataki is very intriguing to me.
Konda may not be the sanest guy, but he's still quite rational, I don't really see Kataki as that rational. "You denied me my vengeance, now I'm gonna hunt you down to torture you for eternity! Blarg!"? That, to me, sounds like red's reckless vengeance to me. I do think Kataki will turn out to be white, but I think an argument certainly exists for it being red. Black? Now that one I don't see.
The art suggests that Kataki will not be a flip guy. Flip arts have a telltale diagonal split and reverse, which haven't been done so far using cropping, they've been all done in one peice. In order for Kataki to be a flipper, they'd need a crop, which I doubt they'd start doing now. The art description would have instructed the artist to use the standard form for flip arts.
If you ask me, Kataki will probably be a No Mercy/Retaliate combo. He definately has a "You hurt me, not you die." vibe. :tongue2:
