While at local card store for a draft tonight, a guy who often plays in there and also happens to work for a printing company where they print magic cards mentioned a new mechanic called, I believe, "sweep" where you return lands to your hand to improve an effect. For example, the one he mentioned was a white card where you return X lands to your hand to give target creature +X/+X until end of turn. (may have been situational, but he couldn't remember) Anyways, I can't post scans or anything, because I didn't actually get to see any cards, but this is someone I trust, and who I would not expect to make this kind of thing up.
An interesting enough effect, and in line with the hand size matters theory we've all but concluded on... the name seems a bit dubious, but it could be a number of different variations, and hell, at this point I'll take a spoiler in any shape or form so....
many thanks for the news, let's hope more sources come through with the goods soon *wink R_E Wink*
This sounds plausable, although returning lands to hand has so far been primarily a Soratami mechanic. Returning X lands to give a temporary +X/+X seems pretty awful, though.
How exactly would this mechanic work? Is it an additional cost when playing a spell? An actifated ability on permanents? I must be misunderstanding something somewhere.
And I would expect a card such as you've stated to be green, not white. Though there have been white +X/+X cards before, so it's not completely out of the question.
On the bright side, I'm quite sure you're not our recent fake-spammer, so go you. And why is it always some guy from the printers wandering into a shop delivering news? Or a distributer that you (general you) eavesdropped on? Or a friend's uncle from R&D?
Things just don't seem to be adding up on this. I'm skeptical. *shrug*
ETA: VinnyB's post reminded me that in this block, blue's Soratami have the monopoly on land bouncing for effects. Why would this spread to all the other colors?

If it increases your hand size for another effect that wants a huge hand size, then it's not so bad.

Why did I ever think a signature in comic sans was a good idea?
i'm sceptical, not because of who posted it(go to combat phase has been around since the start) but because it seems to be a complicated and hard to word mechanic(and sweep is a stupid name).
Yeah, this abilitiy sounds fairly believable. However, I'm going to remain kinda tipsy for the reason that the Soratmi have the land bounce for effect deal. I'd feel more comfortable if maybe it would let you bounce ANY permanents to your hand for a certain effect. I dunno, that might be a bit odd though. I don't know.....I'll give you the benefit of the doubt until we get confirmation.

Wait - have we gotten any real confirmation that the theme of Saviors is "hand size matters"? I know we've been thinking so since Oppressive Will was found, but aside from that do we know for certain that this is the theme?

Not really Mikey, but it's been speculated on to great length's in other threads & forums...
...and I completely agree with you that we'd be more likely to see this knida of activation/additional cost on a soratami creature or spell (Blue of course), it really depends what else the set can deliver for interaction with this sort of card (lands enetering and leaving playetc) If there's a cycle of them for instance, I really couldn't see there being a keyword to warrant it, and if there's 20+ cards with this ability (including creatures), well, I still couldn't see it warranting a Keyworded ability, but then again, we have bushido don't we? :-)...
Let's hope we'll find out more on this one soon... gogo Saviors!:halo:

Yeah, I didn't think so. I found it odd that we'd get a mechanic that has such synergy with the speculated theme. Though I guess I'd be just as suspicious if the theme had been confirmed, I'm just wary that we're getting something that seemingly backs up our assumptions about the set. Especially when said assumptions are basically taken as fact now .... hmmmmm.

There definately wouldn't be 20+ cards with the ability, that's almost unheard of in a small set. And I'd agree that a small number of cards with the ability wouldn't be enough to warrant a keyword except for one thing: Scry.
Otherwise, the mechanic just doesn't seem to jive with me as far as the whole block is concerned. It seems to come completely out of nowhere (except for the Soratami, but again, why would their ability be found in other colors suddenly) and doesn't really fit with anything else in the block. Of course, this could be real and I could look like a ranting ass, but I'm used to that by now.
have we gotten any real confirmation that the theme of Saviors is "hand size matters"?
The Lotus Noir information, which has been confirmed true, said that there will be a mechnic about "wisdom" which counts cards in hand.
As for this thread, I wonder why his friend didn't mention anything when Saviors was being printed several months ago. Funny that he only now mentions what he saw a long time ago - during prime faker season.
The Lotus Noir information, which has been confirmed true, said that there will be a mechnic about "wisdom" which counts cards in hand.
Wow, I managed to forget that completely. I think I didn't take the theme seriously at first because it was translated text, which could be completely skewed by one mistranslation. One word interpretted wrong could change the meaning of the whole paragraph. Then all the "two redone cards from Arabian Nights" hoopla started and I just forgot all about the other stuff from LN. Well don't I feel like an ass. :tongue2:
Still doesn't sway me on this rumor, however. I'm still skeptical. Cuz I'm stubborn, dammit.

If I worked at a printing company I don't think I would walk around telling people about stuff that I saw. I mean if any one would happen to tell someone whoworks for Hasbro I would probabily be fired. Not only that if I was to spill some information I think I would spill something a little more noticable. For example: "Wow, guess what I saw? The coolest looking dragon horses. And you can't believe what this one cards does." Or something like that, see what I'm getting at?
2/5 Fake: A chance its real do to you are not a new member and the ability doesn't seem far fetched.
I find it odd that this would be a white card, rather than a green card. Also wouldn't cards like this help out the "hand size theme" a bit too much?
Eh.....perhaps the white one gives target blocking or attacking creature +X/+X? Then it would be more white. And true it would help the hand size matter idea we've been running with, but it's not entirely a good thing to send lands back to your hands on a regular basis.....this is something I'd do for the kill when I have 5-7 lands out.

There can't be a white Soratami. A Samurai is gained through learning Bushido, a Soratami is gained through being born a Moonfolk. Humans are in both white and green, and it was mentioned in stories that some Samurai came to Jukai to enlighten themselves. Moonfolk are blue.

Pillow wasp worked at a printing company and leaked VERY early info for us.
There is precedent, but I agree with R_E that the timing is very fishy.
Also the mechanic sounds really really really bad.
(In block with expensive to cost uber legends, lets have alot of returning lands to hands guys)

I'm going to say fake only because tis' the season. That and it sounds like a truely uninspired mechanic when we already have a random "+x/+x" mechanic in the block. Seriously- two mechanics that do roughly the same thing? Give me a break.
btw, this is my gimmick account

Sedatives hit the nail on the head in the second paragraph. This block needs a cost reduction mechanic not a second mechanic/theme that returns your lands to your hand. This block has to much uber fat to be wanting to mess up its mana developement that much.
